The disruption was announced for September 29 through October 19, with GM expecting normal operations to resume October 20. The available reporting does not identify the missing parts or establish that the shortage affected other GM plants.
What happened at GM’s Wentzville plant?
Ars Technica reported on September 15, 2025, that GM would temporarily lay off workers at Wentzville Assembly because of a parts shortage. A letter from the plant head and local union head described “a temporary layoff from September 29–October 19.” Ars reported that GM expected the plant to return to normal operations on October 20. These were the announced dates and anticipated restart at the time, not confirmation of a current disruption or a quantified recovery. Ars Technica’s report said the facility had more than 4,000 employees; that was an approximate workforce figure published in 2025, not a current headcount.
Which vehicles does Wentzville build?
UAW Local 2250 identifies four vehicle lines built at Wentzville: the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, and the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans. The union’s membership page lists approximately 4,200 active members, a separate current membership figure that should not be treated as the plant’s employee count. UAW Local 2250
What did GM say caused the production change?
The parts-shortage explanation came from the letter reported by Ars Technica. GM’s emailed statement, as reproduced by the outlet, described the decision more generally: “We have temporarily adjusted production schedules at Wentzville Assembly to address supply chain issues and align with overall business needs. The plant is expected to resume normal operations on October 20.” The statement gives GM’s rationale and its expected restart date, but does not name a component or supplier. Ars Technica

Which parts were missing, and was the shortage broader?
The sources reporting this event do not identify the missing component, supplier, or a more specific root cause. They also do not establish that the same shortage affected another GM plant. It would therefore be unsupported to describe this as a semiconductor shortage, attribute it to a particular trade policy, or characterize it as a company-wide parts problem. Ars Technica’s account reports the event and public statements, but does not provide those details.

GM’s 2024 annual report explains that its automotive manufacturing depends on suppliers delivering systems, components, and parts when needed. It describes just-in-time operations as involving minimal inventories and warns that even a short supplier disruption can force production schedule changes or a suspension. That explains how a parts interruption can affect assembly, but it does not establish what happened in Wentzville’s supply chain in September 2025. GM’s 2024 annual report
