It flags the 2014 and 2023 trucks for unusually high complaint counts during their first three years, but those reports are not failure rates and cannot establish how a particular used truck will perform. Treat the years as screening signals, then check the VIN, records and condition of the individual vehicle.
What the owner-complaint comparison says
The comparison covers the GMC Sierra 1500 only—not the Sierra HD or Sierra EV. Model Years compiled NHTSA owner-complaint and recall files and compared complaints filed during each model year’s first three years. For model year Y, that window runs through the end of Y+2. Its page was updated October 7, 2026, and identifies NHTSA files dated October 6, 2026. See the GMC Sierra 1500 year comparison.
For Sierra 1500 model years since 2016, Model Years reports a typical-year median of 98.5 complaints during the first three years. Its avoid rule flags a year only when it has at least 50 complaints and at least twice that median. The page excludes years without three complete years of data, as well as launch and final years with very few sales.
These counts are a way to identify years worth investigating, not a statistical estimate of defect risk. As Model Years cautions, “Complaint counts are unverified owner reports and are not adjusted for sales volume.” A higher count does not show the share of trucks with a problem, and owners’ reports do not prove a defect or confirm a diagnosis. Newer trucks have had less time on the road.

Which Sierra 1500 years are flagged?
| Model year | Complaints in first three years | Most-described concern | How the comparison treats it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 | 254 | Power-steering problems or locked steering | Flagged under the page’s avoid rule; 18 recalls are listed across all reported time. |
| 2015 | 189 | Brake failure or a soft or hard pedal | Does not meet the stated avoid threshold. |
| 2022 | 149 | Engine failure or replacement | Does not meet the stated avoid threshold. |
| 2023 | 285 | Engine failure or replacement | Flagged under the page’s avoid rule; three recalls are listed across all reported time. |
The complaint counts and leading issue descriptions come from Model Years’ compilation; its all-time recall totals are separate from the first-three-years complaint window. The page’s year-by-year figures should not be read as a measure of how many vehicles were affected.
Is there a best GMC Sierra 1500 year?
The comparison does not identify an uncomplicated best year. It says 2016 was the only model year since 2016 below three-quarters of the typical-year complaint median, but also notes a recall affects that year. That narrow result is not enough to recommend every 2016 Sierra as a dependable choice. Check whether applicable recall repairs were completed on the specific truck.
Rank #2
- Front doors open, detail interior and exterior, made of diecast metal with plastic parts and rubber tires
The comparison does not rank 2024–2026 models because they do not yet have three complete years of complaint data under its method. Their absence is not evidence that they are more reliable or less reliable.
What survey-based owner reporting adds
Consumer Reports describes its reliability history as based on subscriber surveys covering about 380,000 vehicles, model years 2000–2025, and 20 potential trouble spots. Its surfaced 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 page labels that year less reliable than other same-model-year cars and includes owner-reported trouble spots and comments about engine problems. Those survey descriptions provide context, but they do not establish a complete year-by-year Sierra ranking that can be directly reconciled with the NHTSA complaint comparison. How to assess a used Sierra before buying
A model-year pattern cannot tell you whether a specific truck has an open recall, was repaired properly or has been maintained. Compare actual listings using the VIN and vehicle-specific evidence rather than relying on the year alone.

- Check recalls by VIN. Enter the truck’s VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether an open safety recall is listed. Ask for documentation of completed repairs and verify any uncertainty with a GMC dealer.
- Review service and ownership records. Look for dated maintenance and repair invoices, and ask about major repairs and unresolved warning lights. A model-year complaint count cannot substitute for this history.
- Evaluate the actual truck. Consider its mileage, condition, powertrain and trim, and have it inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchase. The available comparison does not establish one configuration as universally most reliable.
- Compare the total deal. Weigh the truck’s condition, documented work and price alongside its model-year signal. A flagged year is a reason for closer scrutiny, not automatic proof that a particular example is bad.
How to use the year rankings
- Use 2014 and 2023 as prompts to investigate more closely, noting that their leading reported concerns differ.
- Do not treat 2015 or 2022 as trouble-free simply because they fall below the comparison’s avoid threshold.
- Do not infer that 2016 is a blanket best-year recommendation from its relatively low complaint count.
- Keep complaint totals, recall totals and the condition of the individual truck separate: they answer different questions.
