P0442 means your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics detected a small leak or sealing failure in the evaporative-emissions (EVAP) system. It does not identify which part is leaking. A loose or damaged fuel cap is an easy first check, but hoses, seals, valves, the charcoal canister, or other fuel-vapor plumbing can also cause the code. Inspect the simple items, then use the vehicle-specific EVAP test or a smoke test to locate the fault before replacing parts.
What does P0442 mean?
P0442 is a generic OBD-II trouble code for a small EVAP-system leak. The EVAP system captures fuel vapor and routes it back into the engine rather than letting it escape. During a self-test, the vehicle expects the sealed system to hold pressure or vacuum within its calibrated limit. If the measured change exceeds that limit, the control module can set P0442.
The code points to a loss of system integrity, not a particular failed component. Test thresholds and procedures vary by vehicle. For example, Ford service information describes a calibrated threshold equivalent to an opening of about 1.016 mm (0.040 inch) (Ford monitor description). Mitsubishi’s 2019 procedure uses a different criterion: a pressure change greater than 1,824 Pa (0.53 in.Hg) in 88 seconds after the tank and vapor lines are closed (Mitsubishi service procedure). Those are examples of manufacturer-specific test logic, not universal specifications.
What can cause P0442?
Common possibilities include:
- A missing, loose, damaged, incorrect, or poorly sealing fuel cap.
- Dirt, rust, or damage on the filler neck’s sealing surface.
- A cracked, disconnected, or loose EVAP hose or tube.
- A leaking seal at the charcoal canister, fuel tank, purge line, or vapor line.
- A purge valve or vent valve that does not seal; some vehicles also have a leak-detection pump that can fail.
- Damage to the filler pipe, tank, canister, or other EVAP plumbing.
There is no established cross-vehicle statistic that makes one cause universally “most common.” Start with the cap and visible plumbing, but use the correct test for your year, make, model, and engine to identify the actual leak.

How to diagnose and fix P0442
- Record all codes and freeze-frame data. Other codes involving the purge or vent system, pressure sensor, or fuel level can affect which test should come first. Save this information before clearing anything.
- Check and refit the fuel cap. Confirm that it is present, correct for the vehicle, undamaged, and fully tightened. Mitsubishi’s 2019 service information instructs technicians to tighten the cap until three clicks are heard and notes that an improperly tightened cap can illuminate the warning light (Mitsubishi service procedure). Follow the instructions for your vehicle rather than assuming every cap works the same way.
- Inspect the filler neck and visible EVAP components. Look for a damaged sealing surface, cracked hoses, disconnected fittings, damaged tubes, loose connections, a visibly damaged canister, or valve connectors that are not seated. Ford’s P0442 pinpoint test calls for checking the fuel cap, canister connections, vapor hoses and tubes, vent-valve assembly, purge valve, and filler pipe (Ford service information).
- Run the vehicle-specific EVAP monitor or leak test. Procedures may require a capable scan tool and specific operating conditions. Mitsubishi’s procedure uses an M.U.T.-III scan tool to select the EVAP leak monitor; it notes that the test can raise engine speed. Ford’s procedure also uses scan-tool commands and controlled testing through the EVAP service port. Use the exact service information for your vehicle.
- Use a smoke test if the leak is not visible. A smoke leak-detection machine can help reveal small leaks. An Infiniti bulletin hosted by NHTSA directs technicians to use the applicable electronic service manual for further diagnosis (Infiniti bulletin hosted by NHTSA). Connect the tester at the specified point and follow the vehicle’s pressure limits; do not over-pressurize the EVAP system.
- Repair the fault identified by testing, then verify it. Replace or reconnect the failed cap, hose, seal, valve, canister, tank component, or leak-detection part as appropriate. Clear codes only after saving the diagnostic data, then run the prescribed monitor or drive cycle and check that P0442 does not return.
Will replacing the gas cap fix P0442?
Only if the cap or its sealing surface is causing the leak. Tightening or replacing a faulty cap is a sensible first step because it is easy to check, but a new cap will not fix a cracked hose, leaking valve, canister seal, or other fault. If the code returns after the cap is correctly installed, continue diagnosis instead of replacing parts at random.
Can you drive with P0442?
A vehicle may drive normally with P0442 because the code concerns EVAP-system integrity. However, the warning light can prevent an emissions monitor from completing or lead to an emissions-inspection failure, depending on local requirements. Have the leak diagnosed rather than treating normal drivability as proof the system is fine.

Seek prompt service if you notice a fuel odor, visible fuel leakage, rough running, stalling, or additional warning codes. The cited factory procedures do not establish a universal safety guarantee for every vehicle.

- Access and labor: whether the component is easy to reach or located near or above the fuel tank.
- Verification: whether the shop will run the vehicle’s EVAP monitor or specified drive cycle after repair.
What tools are useful?
- OBD-II scanner: Useful for reading P0442 and related codes, saving freeze-frame data, and clearing the code after repair. Enhanced scan tools may also support EVAP monitor or actuator tests; the exact functions depend on the vehicle and tool. Factory procedures use scan-tool-controlled testing.
- EVAP smoke-leak tester: Helpful when visual inspection does not reveal the leak. Use the vehicle’s specified connection points and pressure limits.
- Vehicle-specific replacement parts: Choose a cap, valve, hose, seal, canister, or leak-detection pump only after testing identifies it as faulty.
