P0171 means the engine computer has detected a lean condition on Bank 1. That can result from excess air, insufficient fuel, or a misleading sensor reading; the code does not identify a failed part. Check for leaks and other basic faults first, then use vehicle-specific scan data and service procedures to confirm the cause before replacing anything.
What does P0171 mean?
P0171 is commonly labeled System Too Lean (Bank 1). The engine control module monitors air/fuel feedback and adjusts fueling to meet its target. When the required correction becomes excessive, it can set P0171. Nissan’s Sentra B18 service procedure describes this feedback process; the code alone does not prove that the air/fuel ratio sensor or oxygen sensor is defective. DENSO’s Toyota diagnostic case also illustrates why a sensor replacement may not solve the underlying issue.
Bank 1 is the engine bank containing cylinder number one under the common OBD-II definition. The vehicle’s own service information should guide diagnosis because code logic, test values, and repair procedures vary by make, model year, engine, and market.
What can cause P0171?
Several faults can produce a lean reading. Nissan and Mitsubishi service procedures list possibilities including intake air leaks, incorrect PCV hose routing, exhaust leaks, MAF or air/fuel ratio sensor issues, fuel-pressure or fuel-supply problems, injector faults, wiring, and other sensor or control faults. Nissan service information and Mitsubishi service information describe vehicle-specific diagnostic lists; they are not a ranking of the most common causes across all cars.

- Unmetered intake air: A cracked, disconnected, or incorrectly routed hose can let air into the engine without being measured as expected.
- Exhaust leakage: Air entering the exhaust upstream of an air/fuel sensor can contribute to a false lean report. Subaru’s technical guidance also notes that poor combustion can leave unburned oxygen for the sensor to detect. Subaru TechTIPS
- Fuel delivery or injectors: Incorrect fuel pressure, inadequate fuel supply, injector faults, or contaminated or incorrect fuel may be involved.
- Metering, sensors, wiring, or control faults: MAF readings, air/fuel ratio sensor signals, wiring, or other control issues need testing rather than assumptions.
In one reported Toyota case, DENSO says P0171 and P0174 returned after both air/fuel sensors were replaced. The identified cause was a cracked hose between the charcoal canister purge valve and intake manifold; the repair was to replace the hose, clear the codes, and road-test the vehicle. That case shows why leak checks matter, but it does not establish that this hose is a typical cause on every vehicle. DENSO case report
How to diagnose P0171 in a sensible order
- Record the vehicle details and all codes. Note the year, make, model, engine, other trouble codes, symptoms, and any recent repairs. A generic code definition cannot substitute for the correct service information.
- Inspect accessible intake and PCV parts. Look for loose, disconnected, cracked, or damaged hoses and intake components. Check the air cleaner and housing where applicable. - Check for intake and exhaust leaks. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure. Mitsubishi’s sequence checks for exhaust leakage and an intake vacuum leak before moving on to scan-tool data. An upstream exhaust leak can distort the sensor’s report. Mitsubishi service information Subaru TechTIPS
- Review scan data against the vehicle’s specifications. OEM procedures use scan tools to assess MAF and other readings. Use values and test conditions for the exact vehicle; figures in one manufacturer’s procedure are not universal specifications. Mitsubishi service information
- Test fuel delivery and related components if indicated. Depending on the vehicle and results so far, service procedures may call for fuel-pressure testing, injector checks, fuel-condition checks, wiring inspection, or deeper engine tests. Ford warns that its fuel system is pressurized; follow the vehicle’s safety procedure or leave this work to a qualified technician. Ford service information
- Repair the verified fault, then confirm the repair. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for clearing codes and completing the required drive cycle. Recheck for returning codes. Mitsubishi describes an OBD-II drive cycle and follow-up code check; DENSO’s Toyota case calls for clearing the codes and road testing after the hose repair. Do not replace a MAF sensor, oxygen or air/fuel ratio sensor, fuel pump, or injectors solely because P0171 is present. These are possible fault areas in some procedures, not a diagnosis for a particular car.

Can you keep driving with P0171?
There is no universal safe-to-drive rule for every vehicle with this code. Symptoms and drivability matter. The available examples are vehicle-specific: DENSO’s Toyota case reported rough idle and surging between 500 and 800 RPM, while Nissan documents reduced acceleration under a particular Sentra fail-safe strategy. Neither symptom is guaranteed on other vehicles.
If the car has severe power loss, stalls, overheats, or behaves dangerously, pull over somewhere safe and seek professional help rather than continuing to drive. If it appears to run normally, arrange diagnosis promptly and use the vehicle’s service information; the code itself cannot tell you how severe the underlying fault is.

Which tools help, and when?
- OBD-II scan tool with live data: Useful for reading codes and the data needed by diagnostic procedures. Check that it supports the vehicle and functions required; a basic code reader may not show manufacturer-specific information. Reading P0171 still does not identify the failed part.
- Automotive intake smoke tester: Can help locate intake leaks when appropriate for the vehicle and test access.
- Compatible fuel-pressure gauge: May support later fuel-system testing if the vehicle’s procedure calls for it. Fuel systems can be pressurized, so do not open one without the correct procedure and precautions.
Use the service procedure to decide which tool and test apply. A tool result is useful only when interpreted against the correct vehicle-specific specifications.
