For a used Honda CR-V, start your reliability shortlist with 2012–2016 and 2021–2022, then judge the specific vehicle by its maintenance records, condition and VIN-specific recall status. There is no single model year that every ranking identifies as best: Autoblog picks 2006, while MotorJury’s complaint-and-recall scoring names 2012. Those rankings are screening tools, not guarantees about an individual CR-V.

Which Honda CR-V years are best for reliability?

MotorJury rates 2012–2016 and 2021–2022 favorably among the model years it assessed. Autoblog separately names 2006 its most reliable year. The difference reflects the publishers’ own datasets and methods; neither result is an official Honda or government reliability rating.

MotorJury’s updated 2026-09-27 analysis gives 2012 a score of 88/100, its highest among years in its dataset, and 2019 a score of 26/100, its lowest. These are MotorJury’s own scores, derived from public NHTSA and EPA records—not a probability that a CR-V will fail. CarProbs’ 2026-08-28 snapshot lists 13,712 NHTSA complaints across 22 CR-V model years, 2005–2026, and 142 recall campaigns. Those are aggregate public-record counts, not a failure rate or a count of defects in a particular vehicle. MotorJury’s year analysis and CarProbs’ public-record page provide their respective methods and records.

Model year(s) What the cited analysis says How to use it
2006 Autoblog names it its most reliable CR-V year based on comparatively low complaint totals. A separate pick, but the vehicle is now roughly two decades old; condition and maintenance history matter greatly.
2012–2016 MotorJury places all five years in its favorable “safest years” group and scores 2012 highest in its dataset. A practical group to shortlist, subject to inspection and records.
2021–2022 MotorJury rates these years favorably. Consider that newer model years have had less time to accumulate repair and complaint history.
2017–2019 CarProbs and MotorJury flag this run; MotorJury’s lowest-scoring year is 2019. Investigate the exact vehicle’s history and symptoms rather than assuming every example has a problem.
2023–2025 MotorJury flags these early sixth-generation years in complaint-based scoring; CarProbs notes that newer years have less accumulated history. Treat early rankings as preliminary and recheck updated records.

Autoblog’s assessment also emphasizes age-related and vehicle-specific checks for 2006, including maintenance of the VTEC system and reports of transmission shuddering or slipping. Its analysis discusses Takata airbag campaigns and a power-window-switch recall, so verify campaign completion for any candidate by VIN. Read Autoblog’s 2006 assessment.

Which Honda CR-V years should buyers scrutinize?

Give 2017–2019 closer attention because both CarProbs and MotorJury flag the span. MotorJury describes owner complaints in 2017–2018 examples involving oil dilution, rising oil levels, misfires, stalling and inadequate cabin heat. These are reported patterns in complaint records; they do not prove that every vehicle from those years has a defect, nor do complaint counts establish how often a problem occurs among all vehicles sold.

MotorJury also flags 2023–2025 in its complaint-based scoring. These are early sixth-generation model years, and newer vehicles have had less time in service and less mature public histories. A ranking based on early records should not be treated as a settled reliability verdict.

What does the automatic-braking investigation mean?

The Associated Press reported that NHTSA upgraded an investigation into alleged unintended automatic emergency braking to an engineering analysis covering 2017–2022 CR-Vs. At the time of that report, the vehicles were not being recalled for that investigation. AP reported 1,294 complaints, 47 crash reports and 112 injury reports for the covered Honda vehicles; those figures concern allegations across the investigation’s scope, not confirmed CR-V defects or a CR-V failure rate. An investigation is not itself a finding that a defect exists. Check current NHTSA records because investigation status can change. Read the AP report.

How to compare two used CR-Vs

Use the model-year rankings to decide what to inspect, not to make the decision for you. Compare the generation and powertrain, known reported issue patterns, the length and quality of the service history, mileage, present condition, VIN-specific recall status, and how long that year has been on the road. A documented, well-maintained example can be a better candidate than a higher-ranked year with incomplete records or signs of neglect.

  1. Ask for service and repair records. Look for evidence of routine oil changes, particularly on older vehicles. For a 2006, Autoblog cautions that neglected oil changes can contribute to VTEC-system failure.
  2. Check the exact VIN for recalls. Use the official NHTSA recall lookup and confirm whether applicable repairs have been completed. A model-year campaign count cannot tell you whether the specific car has an open recall.
  3. Test-drive for drivability. Pay attention to transmission behavior, including shuddering or slipping reported in Autoblog’s 2006 assessment, and to any warning lights, unusual noise, misfires or stalling.
  4. Arrange an independent inspection when needed. Warning lights, unusual noises, drivability symptoms, incomplete records or unclear recall history are reasons to have a qualified mechanic assess the candidate before purchase.
  5. Recheck active safety records. For 2017–2022 vehicles, look up the current status of the automatic-braking investigation rather than relying only on an older news report.

Why rankings cannot identify the best individual CR-V

Complaint and recall records can reveal patterns worth investigating, but they are not controlled, exposure-adjusted reliability surveys. Publishers may use different year ranges, record definitions and scoring approaches, which helps explain why Autoblog’s 2006 pick differs from MotorJury’s 2012 top score. The cited material does not establish a definitive year-by-year reliability rate from Honda or a regulator, and public complaint totals should not be read as the share of cars that failed.

Use rankings to narrow the search. For the final choice, give more weight to a credible service history, a clean inspection, satisfactory test drive and completed VIN-specific recall repairs than to a publisher’s score alone.
