Paul “Sludge” Andrews, the Outback Truckers personality injured in a motorcycle crash on 4 March 2023, was transferred to head injury rehabilitation later that month. The “now in brain rehab” headline reflects a March 2023 update, not his current status. The latest located public account, a Big Rigs interview published on 21 November 2025, described ongoing recovery and mostly local driving around Perth.

What happened to Paul “Sludge” Andrews?

Andrews was involved in a motorcycle accident on 4 March 2023. On 19 March, PerthNow reported that he had been transferred to head injury rehabilitation at Fiona Stanley Hospital. His fiancée Wendy said he was extremely tired and in pain after the transfer, though the rehabilitation ward was quieter than the trauma unit.

Media reports described a brain bleed and multiple other injuries, but the lists varied by report and date. PerthNow’s March 2023 account mentioned broken bones, a torn ligament, bruising and abrasions. A later Big Rigs report on 20 April 2023 listed fractures to his skull, eye sockets, cheeks and ribs, a brain bleed, torn neck ligaments, and back and hip pain. These are reported descriptions, not a clinical record.

Date What was reported Work or driving update
March 2023 PerthNow reported his transfer to head injury rehabilitation at Fiona Stanley Hospital; Wendy said he was tired and in pain. No return-to-work or driving update was reported in that account.
April 2023 Big Rigs reported he was heading home after hospital and rehabilitation care. His home recovery was to include physiotherapy, speech therapy and regular doctor and specialist appointments. March 2024 Big Rigs reported fatigue, vertigo and memory loss. Andrews said everyday conversations and appointments could tire him, and that he was not ready to drive. He was appearing again on Outback Truckers; Wendy drove The Phantom in filmed segments.
May 2024 Big Rigs reported fatigue, sensitivity to light and noise, feeling overwhelmed, and loss of smell or taste. Wendy said that visible physical healing did not mean the brain injury had gone away. No new driving status was specified in that update.

What his recovery accounts show

In March 2024, Andrews described memory loss by saying, “It feels like I’ve lost the last year of my life.” In May 2024, Wendy said, “Yes – physically he is better. The broken bones have healed, his body is pretty good, but a brain injury doesn’t just go away.” These statements underline why a visible return to work or driving should not be treated as proof of full recovery. They are personal and family accounts reported by Big Rigs, not findings from treating clinicians.
