Outbraker sells manually adjustable hydraulic brake add-ons for bicycles, but the available evidence does not establish that they reduce crashes or stopping distances. They are not equivalent to electronic, sensor-controlled e-bike ABS: Outbraker’s device is adjusted by hand, and its own installation manual warns that a setting can still allow wheel lock-up and a fall.
What Outbraker’s bolt-on “ABS” is
Outbraker describes its Road and MTB products as hydraulic components that let a rider adjust braking pressure with a dial. The company says reducing excessive pressure can help prevent front-wheel lock or a flip-over during emergency braking. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently established performance findings in the sources available here. Outbraker product information describes the device and its intended function.
The ABS Road listing specifies 24 adjustment clicks, an aluminum and stainless-steel construction, a complete-system weight of 25 g, and a stated three-year warranty. The page displayed €149 when accessed; price and availability can change. Its fit information says Road is for bolt-type calipers and limits SRAM compatibility to Force/Red eTap AXS calipers. Does it work like electronic e-bike ABS?
No. The shared “ABS” name does not mean the systems use the same mechanism. Bosch says its factory-integrated e-bike ABS uses sensors to monitor both wheel speeds and a control unit to adjust brake pressure when front-wheel lock or rear-wheel lift threatens. Outbraker’s product is a manually adjusted hydraulic add-on, not a sensor-controlled system. Bosch’s e-bike ABS overview explains its system; Outbraker’s product page describes its own device.

Bosch reports that 29% of pedelec accidents can be prevented by Bosch e-bike ABS. That is Bosch’s reported accident-research estimate; the accessible overview does not state the year or establish the underlying study’s methods. It is not evidence of an Outbraker result and should not be used to imply one.
What is established about safety claims?
The Outbraker installation manual says: “The OutBraker is a device to assist safe riding. It is not a device that prevents accidents but it helps to reduce accidents and damage.” It also warns: “Be cautious when setting the braking strength to too short of distance you can achieve lock up on the brake which can cause flip over.” These cautions matter: the device does not eliminate the need to set up and use brakes safely.

No independent controlled evaluation specific to Outbraker measuring crash outcomes or stopping distance was identified in the sources available for this article. That means the product’s safety and efficacy claims should be treated as manufacturer claims, rather than as proven crash-prevention or stopping-distance benefits.
The FTC provides historical context, not a ruling about Outbraker. In 1995, the Commission charged three companies over deceptive claims for add-on braking devices for motor vehicles, including claims that the products performed like ABS and reduced skidding. The products were not Outbraker devices or bicycle brakes. Will Outbraker fit your brakes?
Compatibility depends on the Outbraker version, brake interface, brake brand, and fluid type. The manufacturer’s FAQ says its MTB lever-type unit can install directly at Shimano, Tektro, or SRAM hydraulic levers; other brands may require an adapter. It says the Road version fits Shimano, Campagnolo, and certain SRAM hydraulic systems, with the Road listing specifying SRAM Force/Red eTap AXS calipers. Confirm your exact brake model against the Outbraker FAQ and the relevant product listing before buying.
Fluid compatibility is also important. Outbraker says a unit previously used with a different brake-fluid type cannot simply be transferred, because mineral and synthetic fluids must not be mixed. Do not assume a component used with one brake system can safely be moved to another.

Installation and safe setup
The installation manual limits the component to hydraulic disc brakes and says it is intended primarily for professional mechanics. The FAQ recommends professional installation and advises testing full braking at low speed. Hydraulic brake work can involve opening the system and bleeding it; the exact tools and fluid depend on the brake model. Use a qualified mechanic if you are not experienced with that system.
- Identify the brake system. Confirm the brake model, lever interface, caliper type, and specified fluid before choosing the Road or MTB unit.
- Check model-specific fit. Use Outbraker’s FAQ and product listing; do not rely on the broad brand name alone.
- Have the unit installed and the brake serviced correctly. Follow the product manual and brake manufacturer’s requirements, including any necessary bleed procedure.
- Test carefully at low speed. Follow Outbraker’s low-speed test guidance and make sure the brake behaves predictably before riding in traffic or on a descent.
The manual’s warning is particularly relevant during setup: an overly aggressive setting can still allow lock-up and a flip-over. The add-on is not a substitute for sound braking technique, compatible equipment, or safe adjustment.

How to judge the purchase
Consider the product as a manually adjustable brake component with manufacturer-described safety benefits, not as a proven electronic ABS replacement. Its published specifications and fit guidance can help answer whether it is physically suitable for a particular brake, but they do not demonstrate a measured improvement in crash risk or stopping distance. For any decision involving braking performance, distinguish compatibility information from evidence of real-world safety outcomes.
