Out of Office: Microsoft Research’s Peter Lee Is Converting Classic Cars to Electric

Peter Lee’s electric Porsche and Mustang project show why classic-car EV conversions are as much about identity and engineering judgment as they are about replacing gasoline with batteries.

Peter Lee’s electric-car hobby is not about replacing a classic with a generic modern EV. The Microsoft Research leader—identified as the organization’s president in a November 2025 GeekWire profile—is trying to preserve the shapes and personalities of old cars while changing the systems that make them difficult to use.

His garage includes a converted replica 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder and a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback undergoing electrification by Austin-based Moment Motor Company. The projects also expose the central argument over classic-car EV conversions: is changing the powertrain a form of preservation, or does it remove the very character worth preserving?

A research executive with a hands-on car habit

Lee’s professional life is centered on advanced computing, but his automotive background is decidedly physical. According to GeekWire, he spent 22 years at Carnegie Mellon University before joining Microsoft in 2010. He has raced karts and Formula Ford, worked as a licensed auto-body technician, and retained an interest in repairing and fabricating things himself.

That combination helps explain the appeal of these projects. Software can be improved indefinitely; a physical car can eventually be assembled, tested, and driven. Lee has described the completion of a car project as satisfying in a way that software rarely is.

His Microsoft title needs a date qualifier: the GeekWire story, published November 21, 2025, called him president of Microsoft Research. That should not automatically be treated as his current title without a separate, up-to-date confirmation.

The two cars

Replica 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder

Lee’s Porsche is a replica, not an original Porsche 550. The model is famous partly because of its association with James Dean, but Lee’s car should not be confused with the Porsche involved in Dean’s fatal crash.

Fuel-system problems in 2020 helped motivate the conversion. By the time GeekWire reported the story, the Porsche had already been electrified. Lee described it as quick enough to be intimidating, illustrating one of the conversion’s defining changes: an electric motor delivers strong torque immediately, without waiting for an engine to build revs.

Lee also described storing the car through the Pacific Northwest winter at roughly 50% charge, then checking the tires and switching it on when driving conditions improved. That is his practice, not a universal storage rule for every battery or conversion.

1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback

The Mustang is a more historically charged donor and was still being converted when the profile appeared. Moment estimated approximately 100–150 hours of engineering and 400–500 hours of installation for the project. Those figures are a project-specific estimate reported by GeekWire, not a standard labor allowance for every classic Mustang.

Lee was involved in decisions that reached from drivetrain architecture to the shift knob. One especially important choice was retaining the Mustang’s solid, or live, rear axle. In Lee’s view, replacing that characteristic would make the car feel less like a Mustang. It is a useful example of the middle ground he is pursuing: the engine can go, but not every mechanical trait has to disappear.

What a professional conversion actually changes

A classic EV conversion is not simply an engine swap with a battery added. A professional build typically involves several interconnected stages.

  1. Assess the donor. The shop must inspect structural rust, accident damage, prior restoration, chassis condition, suspension mounting points, and parts availability. Electrification cannot make an unsafe body or weakened chassis sound.
  2. Design the package. Engineers determine where the battery enclosures, motor, charger, cooling equipment, and other components can fit. They must account for ground clearance, passenger space, weight distribution, axle loads, and service access.
  3. Build the high-voltage system. A complete architecture normally includes battery modules or a pack, a battery-management system, inverter or controller, onboard charger, DC-DC converter, contactors, fuses, a service disconnect, charge inlet, instrumentation, and safety interlocks.
  4. Integrate the mechanical systems. This can involve motor mounts, battery boxes, driveshaft or direct-drive arrangements, cooling circuits, brake changes, suspension work, steering modifications, and chassis reinforcement. An electric motor’s torque may exceed what old axles, differentials, tires, or brakes were designed to handle.
  5. Restore and finish the car. The project may include paint, trim, interior work, concealed wiring, revised gauges, weather sealing, air conditioning, and decisions about whether the conversion should be visually obvious or nearly invisible.
  6. Validate the result. The finished car needs high-voltage insulation and fault checks, charging verification, brake and steering tests, suspension inspection, road testing, and attention to registration, inspection, insurance, and documentation.

Moment describes its Classic Line as a customized engineering and manufacturing process, with restoration potentially taking place before or during electrification.

Why convert a classic?

For Lee, the case is both emotional and practical. Electrification removes gasoline and engine oil, provides immediate torque, and can make a car easier to recommission after seasonal storage. A classic that previously stayed parked because of ignition, fuel, cooling, or lubrication problems may become more usable for short recreational trips.

That does not mean an electric classic is maintenance-free. Brakes, tires, steering, suspension, charging equipment, battery management, thermal systems, high-voltage safety hardware, and the integration between old and new components still require inspection and service. A battery-powered car may eliminate some engine maintenance while introducing an entirely different set of technical dependencies.

Nor does conversion automatically make a car greener, more valuable, or historically preserved. Those outcomes depend on the donor, the battery and materials used, how often the car is driven, the quality of the work, and what future buyers value.

What does it cost?

There is no single “classic EV conversion price.” The donor’s condition, battery size, performance target, restoration scope, and amount of custom fabrication can move the budget dramatically.

Cost signal What it means
$50,000–$150,000 Range quoted by Moment’s Marc Davis in the November 2025 GeekWire report, depending on the car and requirements.
Approximately $75,000–$150,000 Moment’s current Classic Line estimate, excluding the donor vehicle.
100–150 engineering hours plus 400–500 installation hours The project-specific Mustang estimate reported by GeekWire.
$60,000–$150,000-plus vehicle cost Examples listed for Moment’s Signature Line, depending on the model; the figures are vendor pricing signals, not independent market averages.
Generally $70,000–$100,000 including conversion Moment’s stated range for its replica-based R-Line vehicles.

Moment’s Signature Line lists starting examples including $60,000 plus vehicle cost for a Speedster and 550 Spyder, $75,000 for a Mini, $85,000 for a BMW 2002, $125,000 for a Porsche 911, and $150,000 for a C10 or Defender. The page also publishes battery, power, torque, and range claims for those offerings; they are vendor-provided specifications, not independent tests and not specifications for Lee’s cars.

The total project budget can also include the donor, rust repair, paint, trim, brakes, suspension, tires, charging equipment, shipping, storage, taxes, registration, insurance, and a contingency for hidden damage. A reported example of a classic vehicle costing around $200,000 refers to a possible donor-car price, not a standard conversion fee.

Schedule matters too. Moment currently says its Classic Line has an approximately one-year waiting period. A custom build can therefore carry both financial risk and a long period during which the car is unavailable.

Preservation or transformation?

Moment markets its work as preserving the art and beauty of vintage vehicles while modernizing their propulsion. The argument is straightforward: the body, styling, interior, memories, and visual identity remain, while unreliable or inconvenient mechanical systems are replaced.

The purist objection is equally serious. On many classics, the engine is not merely a component. It contributes sound, vibration, shifting, exhaust smell, mechanical rhythm, weight distribution, and historical meaning. Removing it can reduce originality and collectability. Added electric torque can also expose weaknesses in brakes, axles, tires, differentials, and chassis components.

“Preservation” therefore depends on what the owner means by preserving the car:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the physical body and design;
  • the owner’s memories and emotional connection;
  • the ability to drive the car regularly;
  • the original driving sensations; or
  • the vehicle’s historical specification.

These are not interchangeable goals. A careful, documented conversion may preserve a usable object and its story, but it does not preserve the car exactly as manufactured. Lee’s retained live axle shows how an owner can replace one defining system while deliberately protecting another.

The AI connection

The technology angle is more subtle than “Microsoft built an AI Mustang.” During research for the Porsche conversion, Lee said he used OpenAI’s early Davinci-003 model and received a skeptical response when describing the project. That anecdote demonstrates exploratory use of an AI model; it does not show that AI designed, validated, or safety-tested the conversion.

Lee also sees cars as a laboratory for thinking about action models: systems that predict and select the next action an agent should take to reach a goal. Driving and racing provide an unusually concrete setting for that problem because decisions must account for motion, changing conditions, risk, and a desired outcome.

He has connected automotive software and racing technology with broader questions about intelligent systems, potentially including desktop software. But the available reporting does not establish that the Mustang has autonomous-driving capability, contains a Microsoft research system, or serves as a formal Microsoft research platform. Those comments are forward-looking ideas, not vehicle specifications or an announced product.

Should you convert your own classic?

A suitable donor should have a sound structure, manageable rust, adequate space for batteries, parts support, and a chassis capable of handling the revised weight and torque. Owners should also be comfortable with irreversible changes and the possibility that the finished car will drive differently from the car they remember.

Before signing with a shop, ask for:

  • a written scope separating electrification from restoration;
  • battery capacity, motor output, expected range, and charging specifications for your exact build;
  • the proposed axle, differential, transmission, brake, tire, and suspension strategy;
  • details about battery enclosure protection, fusing, isolation monitoring, service disconnects, and high-voltage training;
  • testing, registration, inspection, insurance, warranty, and post-delivery support;
  • ownership of diagnostic tools and access to replacement parts if suppliers change;
  • a schedule, payment milestones, storage policy, and process for hidden damage or scope changes.

High-voltage work should be performed by qualified professionals. The insurer must be told that the vehicle has been modified and electrified, while registration and inspection rules vary by state and jurisdiction. EV West’s FAQ, for example, discusses staged kit purchasing, battery choices, brake upgrades, and notifying insurers.

Lower-risk alternatives

Keeping the original combustion drivetrain is the clearest choice for originality, concours judging, and traditional collector value. Owners who mainly want reliability can consider electronic ignition, fuel-system improvements, electric cooling fans, upgraded brakes, better lighting, improved wiring, or period-appropriate air conditioning without replacing propulsion.

A factory-built EV offers warranty coverage, predictable charging, modern safety systems, and established service at lower project risk—but not the exact classic body. A replica electric vehicle avoids some uncertainty in an old donor; Moment’s R-Line is one example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Experienced builders can investigate vehicle-specific kits and build packages from EV West, or conversion products and training from Legacy EV. A kit is not automatically a bolt-on weekend project: compatibility, fabrication, high-voltage safety, troubleshooting, and compliance move onto the owner or installer. Olympian Motors’ modular platform is another professional-platform option, but buyers must confirm what its price includes.

What is known—and what is not

Lee publicly shared the GeekWire story on LinkedIn, describing the hobby as a design, engineering, and learning experience involving Moment. That supports the profile’s account, but it does not establish that the Mustang was completed, road-legal, or still in the same configuration by August 2026.

There is no verified final specification for the Mustang, no independent performance testing, no confirmed completion date, and no evidence that Microsoft formally incorporated the car into its research. Those limits matter because custom conversions are defined by their exact build, not by the headline specifications of a vendor’s other vehicles.
