Otto says it could burn more than 60% less fuel than comparable aircraft, but that figure remains a company claim: the Phantom has not yet flown, entered service or demonstrated its projected fuel savings in commercial operation.
What is the Phantom 3500?
The Phantom 3500 is Otto Aerospace’s clean-sheet, all-carbon-fiber business-jet project. Its distinctive fuselage omits conventional passenger windows, which Otto says helps preserve smooth airflow over the aircraft. The company unveiled a full-scale mockup in September 2025 and described the aircraft as a super-midsize jet.
Otto announced Williams International’s FJ44-4 QPM turbofan as the selected engine in June 2025. The engine is one element of the design; Otto presents its fuel-efficiency claims as aircraft-level results tied to the airframe and aerodynamic concept, not as savings produced by the engine alone. Otto’s engine announcement
How much fuel does Otto say it will save?
Otto’s claims have been expressed in several ways, against different comparison descriptions. They should not be combined into a single independently verified result.

| Over 60% lower fuel burn | Otto Aerospace’s September 2025 launch announcement; the cited statement does not establish an independently measured in-service result. Otto launch announcement |
| 61% lower fuel burn | Otto Aerospace’s May 2026 interior-partner announcement, compared with “today’s super-midsize aircraft.” It remains a company projection, not an operating result. Otto interior-partner announcement |
| 50% less fuel and 35% less drag | Figures attributed to Otto in FlightGlobal’s 2025 report; the drag figure was described in relation to initial wind-tunnel findings, not commercial aircraft operations. The report does not establish that its fuel comparison uses the same baseline as Otto’s later claims. FlightGlobal report |
These figures are not interchangeable: they use different wording and, in the available descriptions, do not specify a common, normalized comparison. The named sources do not provide an independently published Phantom flight-performance dataset or validation study. Otto CEO Paul Touw told FlightGlobal of the reported wind-tunnel work, “We didn’t think we would be able to take that much energy out of a flight.” That is an executive’s reaction to the company’s reported findings, not an independent test conclusion.
How does a windowless passenger cabin work?
Otto proposes replacing ordinary porthole windows with SuperNatural Vision, an internal digital-display system intended to show views of the sky and surrounding scenery. The company has described ultra-wide displays spanning 72 inches. F/LIST, announced as the interior-development partner in May 2026, is to work on cabin furniture and linings; Otto says it is developing SuperNatural Vision internally. Otto’s F/LIST announcement

The proposed system is a digital alternative to conventional windows, not evidence that the Phantom has no passenger views. But it has not been validated in passenger service, so its real-world appearance and experience remain to be demonstrated.
Where does the Phantom program stand?
Milestones announced so far indicate a program in design and planning, not a certified aircraft. Otto said the Phantom completed Preliminary Design Review in May 2026 and moved into detailed design and production planning. The company said that review enabled an aerodynamic-design and major-interface freeze, and reiterated a 2027 target for the first flight-test vehicle. It described future flight testing as a way to demonstrate the performance and producibility of its laminar-flow technology. Otto’s Preliminary Design Review announcement

In June 2026, Otto announced closure of the FAA G-1 Issue Paper, establishing the certification basis under 14 CFR Part 23. That sets a regulatory framework for certification work; it is not type certification or permission to carry passengers commercially. Otto announcement via PR Newswire
At launch in September 2025, Otto targeted first flight in 2027 and certification and entry into service in 2030. Those dates are company targets, not achieved milestones. The same announcement estimated a launch price of approximately $19.5 million; that is a company estimate, not a current delivered-aircraft price. Otto launch announcement

What has Flexjet ordered?
Flexjet announced in September 2025 that it was the Phantom’s launch customer, with a firm order for 300 aircraft plus additional options. This is an announced order, not a delivery record or proof that the aircraft will meet its projected performance. Flexjet’s order announcement
What the fuel claim does—and does not—say about emissions
Fuel burn, emissions and overall climate impact are separate measures. Otto’s 2025 launch materials also claimed that using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) could reduce emissions by more than 90%, lower fuel costs by 40% after an SAF premium, and reduce total global-warming impact by 97%. The announcement does not provide enough detail or independent validation to generalize those figures; they are Otto’s claims, and the 40% figure is about fuel costs rather than fuel consumption. What a buyer cannot yet compare
Otto and FlightGlobal have discussed the Bombardier Challenger 3500 and Embraer Praetor 500 as comparison aircraft, but the cited sources do not provide a normalized independent operating comparison. They do not establish a like-for-like Phantom-versus-rival table for range, passenger capacity or fuel burn. Until the Phantom flies and those specifications and performance figures are established on a comparable basis, the efficiency claim is a proposition to evaluate—not a demonstrated operating advantage.
