A man identified in subsequent reporting as Adeniyi Orojio told PUNCH that he and other witnesses tried to help after Anthony Joshua’s SUV crashed in Makun, and flagged down passing vehicles before FRSC officials arrived. His account describes what he saw at the scene; the police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) gave separate accounts of the crash and its cause.
What the eyewitness said he saw
In an on-scene report, PUNCH placed the crash just before Danco Filling Station in Makun, ahead of the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound side of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The witness described a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and a Pajero SUV behind it carrying security personnel.
According to the witness as quoted by PUNCH, Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. A further passenger sat next to the driver. The witness said he and others began rescue efforts and flagged down oncoming vehicles to get help. He said FRSC officials arrived minutes later and reported that the passenger next to the driver and the passenger beside Joshua had died at the scene. These details are the witness’s account as reported by PUNCH, not an independently verified interview transcript.

What FRSC said caused the crash
FRSC Ogun State spokesperson Afolabi Oyewole later attributed the crash to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, saying the driver hit a truck parked on the road’s shoulder. This was the agency’s explanation of the cause, distinct from the eyewitness’s description of the rescue effort.
Speaking to Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Oyewole said: “What happened yesterday was that the driver who was involved in that ghastly accident involving Anthony Joshua was on a very high speed. He wrongfully overtook and hit a stationed vehicle that was parked at the extreme shoulder of the road.” Channels Television reported Oyewole’s remarks. The agency urged motorists to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking, particularly on high-speed roads such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. FRSC’s warning was reported alongside its account.

Associated Press reported the arraignment.
Joshua’s recovery at the time of reporting
Associated Press reported that Joshua was discharged from hospital after Nigerian authorities said he was clinically fit to recuperate at home. The crash killed two of his close associates and team members. This describes the immediate aftermath, not an up-to-date medical assessment. Associated Press reported the discharge.
