That is a regional observation, not evidence that buyers everywhere reject the idea. Separately, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro says the next-generation MX-5 should be prepared for a future without a combustion engine. Mazda has not confirmed an electric Miata or announced a launch date.
What did Mazda’s executive say about electric Miatas?
CarExpert reported on October 6, 2026, that Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said the company does not see many customers entering dealerships and asking for an electric MX-5. The report is the basis for the headline; the original interview transcript was not available, so the remark should be understood as reported rather than treated as a verbatim quotation. CarExpert’s report provides no customer sample, survey method, or quantified inquiry data.
That makes the comment useful as a snapshot of what Mazda Australia says it hears in its market, but not as a measure of global demand. “We see few requests” does not establish that nobody wants an electric Miata, or that prospective buyers would reject one if Mazda offered it.
Is Mazda making an electric Miata?
There is no confirmed electric MX-5 in the cited announcements, and Mazda has not provided a production decision or launch date. But the company has also not ruled out a combustion-free successor. In a report published August 3, 2026, MotorTrend quoted Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro saying “the successor [to the current Miata] must also be ready for a scenario without a combustion engine.” That describes engineering readiness for a possible future, not a commitment to sell a battery-electric model. - The model breathtakingly captures the car?s dynamic form with roof and side windows down.
- Features realistic depictions of the underside and interior.
- Metal transfers are included to recreate emblems and side mirror surfaces.
- The model can be assembled as left- or right-hand drive versions, and includes markings to recreate Japanese, U. S. and rest-of-the-world market cars.
Moro also described an engineering weight target: “the target weight for the engineers is between just under 1,000 and 1,200 kilograms. And I believe we can achieve that.” This is a broad target reported by the CEO, not a certified curb weight, a final specification, or a confirmed weight for an electric MX-5.
How Mazda’s broader EV plans fit in
Mazda’s global electrification strategy leaves room to respond differently across markets and over time. In a March 18, 2025 release, the company said it aims “to flexibly address the electrification era,” describing an approach shaped by customer demand, regulation, and regional conditions. The release said Mazda planned to launch an in-house battery EV during the 2025–2027 phase, but did not identify that vehicle as an MX-5. Mazda USA’s strategy announcement.

Mazda’s 2025 regional-strategy Q&A likewise distinguishes between markets and near-term needs. For Europe, the company said jointly developed vehicles would help meet near-term electrification requirements, while Mazda focused its own resources on Skyactiv-Z, hybrid vehicles, and electric technology. This explains why a global strategy does not settle the next MX-5’s powertrain. Mazda’s regional-strategy Q&A.
A separate figure needs careful dating: Mazda Motor Corporation’s November 2022 management briefing projected that EVs would account for 25–40% of worldwide sales in 2030, based on country policies and regulations. That was a company forecast, not observed demand or a current sales share, and it does not specify the MX-5’s future powertrain. Mazda’s 2022 management briefing.

What changed in the public picture of the next MX-5?
In April 2025, Car and Driver described the then-public direction for the next MX-5 as naturally aspirated and manually shifted, and noted that Mazda had not announced an electric version. That account predates Moro’s 2026 comment about preparing for a combustion-free scenario. Read together, the reports show a change in what Mazda has publicly discussed—not confirmation that an EV has been approved. Car and Driver’s April 2025 account.
The available statements leave open whether a future MX-5 could use combustion, hybrid technology, a battery-electric powertrain, or some combination across versions or markets. They do not establish which route Mazda will choose. The distinction is straightforward: preparing engineers for a possible scenario is not the same as announcing a product.
