Onsemi and Volkswagen Partner on SSP EV Traction Inverters

Onsemi says it will supply Volkswagen Group with a complete EliteSiC-based power-box solution for SSP traction inverters. The announcements do not confirm vehicle launch timing or independent performance results.

Onsemi’s July 2024 announcement describes a multi-year agreement to supply Volkswagen Group with a complete power-box solution for the next-generation traction inverter planned for its Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The solution uses onsemi EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs and is designed to scale across vehicle categories. It is an OEM supply and engineering collaboration—not a consumer product announcement or confirmation of when SSP vehicles will launch.

What did onsemi and Volkswagen announce?

On July 22, 2024, onsemi said it had been selected as Volkswagen Group’s primary supplier of a complete power-box solution for an SSP next-generation traction inverter. Onsemi described the design as scalable from high- to low-power traction inverters across vehicle categories. The announcement concerns components and engineering for Volkswagen’s vehicle platform, rather than an inverter buyers can purchase separately. Read onsemi’s July 22, 2024 announcement.

Onsemi CEO Hassane El-Khoury characterized the power box as a “single, simplified modular and scalable platform” intended to maximize efficiency and performance across Volkswagen Group vehicles. That is the company’s description of the solution’s aims, not an independently verified performance result. Volkswagen procurement executive Dirk Große-Loheide called onsemi a strategic supplier for the power box “for our first tranche in the SSP platform.”

What is in the power-box design?

According to onsemi, the solution is based on its EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs. The company says it integrates three half-bridge modules mounted on a cooling channel. Onsemi presents the arrangement as a way to reduce energy losses and improve heat management, but its announcement does not publish independent measurements or a quantified efficiency gain.

A traction inverter is part of an electric vehicle’s drivetrain, but these two announcements focus on the supplier agreement and module design rather than explaining inverter operation in detail. They provide no comparative test data for this design against other inverter architectures or suppliers.

How does the 2024 agreement relate to the 2023 collaboration?

The July 2024 deal follows an earlier strategic agreement announced on January 25, 2023. That agreement covered onsemi EliteSiC 1200 V traction-inverter modules for next-generation Volkswagen EVs, including support for front and rear inverters. At the time of the 2023 release, pre-production samples were under development and evaluation; that is a historical status, not an update on the modules’ present status. Read onsemi’s January 25, 2023 announcement.

The 2024 announcement describes a more complete power-box solution for SSP, while the earlier announcement concerned traction-inverter modules. The releases establish that the collaboration developed from a module agreement into a power-box supply announcement; they do not set out the current contractual terms or confirm the present production status of either arrangement.

Why do the companies emphasize supply-chain geography?

Both announcements present onsemi’s vertically integrated silicon-carbide production chain and regional manufacturing footprint as part of the collaboration’s rationale. In 2024, Große-Loheide praised the company’s vertically integrated supply chain, while onsemi executive Till von Bothmer pointed to regional SiC fabs. These are statements from the companies, not independent supply-chain audits.

  • Heavy-Duty Conductivity: Featuring silver-plated copper contacts and flame-retardant PC housing, this Battery Quick Connector minimizes resistance and maintains stable voltage under load — perfect for high-current applications like electric forklifts, UPS backup systems, and off-grid inverters.
  • Versatile Power System Integration: Use this Battery Quick Connector kit across diverse DC power setups — connect traction batteries in carts or e-bikes, link storage batteries to solar charge controllers, or wire marine propeller motors and communication power supplies with confidence.
  • Dust- and - Design: Each Battery Quick Connector includes a protective sheath that seals the interface against dust, , and physical impact — keeping connections clean and -free whether installed on an outdoor EV charger, warehouse forklift, or saltwater boat.
  • Plug-and-Ready Installation: Includes 2 connectors, 2 sheaths, and 4 plug terminals — simply crimp or solder your 6–10 AWG wires, insert pins into the housing, and lock securely; no special tools needed to upgrade your electric vehicle, UPS, or inverter wiring harness.

Onsemi also linked the 2024 arrangement to its planned Czech Republic manufacturing expansion, which it described as an intended end-to-end European production facility for the inverter power system. The announcement describes a plan; it does not establish that the facility is complete or operating.

Does this announcement give Volkswagen SSP cars a launch date?

No. The January 2023 and July 2024 onsemi releases do not establish a current launch schedule for SSP vehicles, name a consumer vehicle availability date, or say when the power-box solution will enter production. The 2024 release identifies the intended platform and supplier arrangement, not a vehicle launch timeline.

What is—and is not—confirmed?

  • Confirmed as an announcement: Onsemi said in July 2024 that it would be Volkswagen Group’s primary supplier of a complete power-box solution for the SSP next-generation traction inverter.
  • Named technology: The announced design uses EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs and, according to onsemi, three half-bridge modules mounted on a cooling channel.
  • Earlier collaboration: A January 2023 strategic agreement covered EliteSiC 1200 V traction-inverter modules, with pre-production samples then in development and evaluation.
  • Not established by these releases: Independent performance results, current manufacturing-facility status, a current SSP vehicle launch date, or the present status of the contractual arrangements.
