Victor Sheppard’s 2007 Toyota Tundra passed 1 million miles, and a 2025 report says his 2014 Tundra reached the same milestone. The second truck’s engine was reported to be original, but its transmission was replaced after it began refusing reverse. The two stories are remarkable individual cases—not a prediction of how long a typical Tundra will last.
How one driver reached the milestone twice
Sheppard, a hot-shot driver from Houma, Louisiana, was reported to have driven two Tundras past 1 million miles. Cars.com’s May 2016 account says his 2007 truck crossed the mark after nine years. In May 2025, The Fast Lane Truck reported that his 2014 Tundra had also reached 1 million miles.
The later report identifies the second truck as an SR5 2WD Access Cab with a 5.7-liter iForce V8 and six-speed automatic. It says Sheppard averages close to 125,000 miles a year, carries loads in the bed rather than towing a trailer, and gets regular service at a Toyota dealership. Those are details reported about his driving and maintenance, not independently measured test results.
What the two trucks had in common—and what differed
| Truck | Reported configuration | Reported service or use | Reported drivetrain issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 Tundra | 4.7-liter V8, according to The Fast Lane Truck’s 2016 report | Cars.com reported 117 scheduled dealership service visits over nine years. The Fast Lane Truck reported over 115 oil changes. | The Fast Lane Truck reported that it lost reverse at about 770,000 miles. |
| 2014 Tundra | SR5 2WD Access Cab, 5.7-liter iForce V8, six-speed automatic, according to The Fast Lane Truck’s 2025 report | Regular Toyota dealership maintenance; the report says Sheppard averages close to 125,000 miles annually and about 18 mpg on long hauls. | The report says it began refusing reverse around 860,000 miles and its transmission was replaced; the engine was reported original. |
The counts describe different things: Cars.com’s 117 figure is scheduled dealership visits, while The Fast Lane Truck’s “over 115” figure refers to oil changes. They should not be treated as interchangeable service totals.

What broke on the million-mile Tundras?
The 2007 truck
Cars.com listed an alternator, water pump, and timing belts among the 2007 truck’s more serious repairs. The Fast Lane Truck separately reported a loss of reverse gear at about 770,000 miles. Toyota exchanged the truck for a new 2016 Tundra so it could study the high-mileage vehicle and its component wear, according to Cars.com and MotorTrend’s Tundra history.
The 2014 truck
The Fast Lane Truck’s 2025 report says the 2014 truck’s transmission began refusing reverse around 860,000 miles and was replaced. It reports that the engine remained original when the truck reached 1 million miles. Sheppard planned to keep driving it, according to that account.

What the reports say about maintenance
The first truck’s long dealership-service history is documented in Cars.com’s account: 117 regularly scheduled visits over nine years. The Fast Lane Truck’s 2016 story gives a separate figure of over 115 oil changes and describes the 4.7-liter V8 and reverse-gear failure. For the second truck, the 2025 report describes regular Toyota dealership maintenance, but the available account does not provide a detailed service log, oil specification, or parts list.
Toyota chief truck engineer Mike Sweers called the first vehicle unusual: “Having a million-mile truck in as pristine condition as this one with original parts is a truly rare find,” he said in a statement quoted by Cars.com. That remark concerned the 2007 truck and should not be read as a claim that every component was original; Cars.com also reported repairs to parts including the alternator and water pump.

What these million-mile cases do—and don’t—show
The reports establish two notable high-mileage stories involving the same driver, but they are case histories, not a controlled reliability study. They do not provide a population-level Tundra lifespan statistic or show that a particular maintenance schedule caused either truck to reach the milestone. Sheppard’s reported annual mileage and regular servicing describe his circumstances, not a guarantee for other owners.
The 2007 truck belonged to the second-generation Tundra era, according to MotorTrend’s model history. Its exchange for a 2016 model gave Toyota an opportunity to examine that specific vehicle; it does not amount to a published durability test of the model as a whole.
