The Oldsmobile W-43 was a cancelled experimental 455-cubic-inch V8, not a production engine. Its defining feature was four valves per cylinder—32 in total—in pentroof combustion chambers. “The Killer” is a name used in modern coverage, but the available sources do not establish it as an official Oldsmobile name or a period nickname.
What the Oldsmobile W-43 was
Oldsmobile developed the W-43 as part of its high-performance engine program. The contemporary account in Hot Rod’s “Olds Super Rocket” feature, originally published in May 1971, describes the W-43 as an experimental 455-cubic-inch V8. It was cancelled before reaching regular production, so it never had a standardized production rating or a normal production run.
The W-43’s unusual cylinder-head design set it apart from an ordinary Oldsmobile 455. It used four valves per cylinder, for 32 valves total, and pentroof combustion chambers. Mac’s Motor City Garage reports 1.75-inch intake valves and 1.375-inch exhaust valves, with 43 percent more intake valve area than a conventional two-valve 455 head; those specifications come from its technical account of the W-43.
Was the W-43 a Hemi?
Not in the precise technical sense supported by these accounts. Mac’s Motor City Garage identifies the W-43’s chamber as pentroof, not hemispherical. “Hemi” may appear as shorthand in modern descriptions, but it is not the accurate chamber classification for the design described in the technical source.

- EXPOSED DOHC V8 ARCHITECTURE: This model presents a V8 layout with two angled cylinder banks, four exposed overhead camshafts, dual timing-chain drives, a central intake section, and outward-facing exhaust headers. The open arrangement makes the major mechanical structures easy to identify before and during operation.
- PRECISION METAL CONSTRUCTION: Built from precision-cast and machined components in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Defined surfaces, exposed fasteners, timing assemblies, and front pulleys reflect key structures found in modern V8 engine architecture while giving the completed model a detailed industrial finish.
- 500+ COMPONENT ASSEMBLY: Build the model from more than 500 labeled components, including precision metal parts, screws, and assembly hardware. Custom foam trays help organize and protect the parts, while the included tool set and full-color manual guide the approximately five-hour assembly process.
- MOTORIZED FOUR-STROKE MOTION: An electric motor concealed inside the starter housing drives the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and valvetrain through a four-stroke mechanical sequence. Viewing openings reveal the internal movement, while the exposed camshafts, timing chains, and belt-driven pulleys show how motion is transferred across the assembled engine.
- MECHANICAL DISPLAY FOR HOME OR OFFICE: Measuring approximately 7.80 × 6.69 × 7.09 inches when assembled, the DM118 combines visible mechanical motion with detailed metal construction. Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.
How much horsepower did the W-43 make?
There is no single production horsepower rating to quote. The figures reported for the W-43 refer to different configurations and periods, so they should not be treated as results from a matched test.
| Reported output | Configuration and context | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 440 hp at 4,600 rpm | A relatively mild state of tune during development. | Hot Rod, May 1971 feature; a period development figure, not a production rating. |
| 560 hp at 5,000 rpm | A four-cam development version. The period account says its camshaft and valve-gear combination was not yet optimized and that the engine did not want to rev. | Hot Rod, May 1971 feature; a separate development configuration from the 440-hp figure. |
| 560 hp at 6,000 rpm and 540 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm | A later reconstructed engine’s dyno result. The quoted account says a modest redline was used to protect irreplaceable parts. | James Kryta, as quoted in a 2024 enthusiast forum post reproducing an article excerpt; a restoration-era test, not a factory rating. |
The 1971 development reports and later dyno result describe distinct engines or configurations under different conditions. Their numbers are useful evidence of the project’s potential, not directly comparable ratings.

Why Oldsmobile cancelled the W-43
Hot Rod’s contemporary account says GM management curtailed high-performance activity in late 1969, after which the W-43 was cancelled. It places the decision within a broader shift in company priorities. The cited accounts do not establish emissions rules, cost, complexity, or corporate rivalry as the single definitive cause, so those explanations should be treated as possible context rather than settled fact.
Why it is called “The Killer”
Inline Tube used “The Killer” in its March 2024 coverage of the W-43. That modern usage does not establish the phrase as Oldsmobile’s official codename or a nickname used during the original program. The May 1971 Hot Rod feature instead titled its account “Olds Super Rocket.” The name’s origin remains unclear in the available sources.

What happened to the W-43, and can you buy one?
Hot Rod reported that much of the project material was scrapped, although some components survived and were shown to the magazine’s writers. Later coverage describes a W-43 restoration associated with James Kryta. The sources cited here do not establish the restored engine’s current location, ownership, or display status.
Because the W-43 never entered production, the sources do not establish a production replacement-parts supply or confirm that ordinary 455 parts fit the experimental engine. For historical documentation, Hot Rod’s May 1971 issue is a relevant reference because it contains the original “Olds Super Rocket” feature; current availability of that issue is not established.
