OEM Parts vs. Aftermarket Parts: What’s the Difference?

OEM and aftermarket identify a part’s source, not a guaranteed quality level. Compare exact fitment, condition, warranty, cost, and safety requirements before choosing.

OEM and aftermarket describe who supplies or makes a replacement part—not a guaranteed quality ranking. An aftermarket part is made by a company other than the vehicle manufacturer, while “OEM” is commonly used for parts associated with the automaker. Neither label alone proves fit, quality, or value. Compare the exact part, vehicle application, condition, warranty, price, and safety requirements before approving a repair.

What do OEM and aftermarket mean?

Aftermarket is the clearer of the two labels: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines an aftermarket part as one made by a company other than the vehicle manufacturer. “OEM” is common shorthand for original-equipment-manufacturer parts, but sellers may use the term inconsistently. Ask who made the specific part and whether its number is the automaker’s catalog number; do not assume the automaker manufactured every component originally installed in a vehicle.

The labels describe source, not a universal grade. FTC guidance says new replacement parts are generally made to original manufacturer specifications by either the vehicle manufacturer or an independent company, and that prices and quality vary. That does not establish that any particular aftermarket part matches a particular original part. FTC: Auto Repair Basics

How should you compare replacement parts?

Genuine OEM 23368720 Fuel Tank Filler Cap for GM Chevrolet
  • Genuine Factory Part in Original Retail Packaging
  • OEM quality & Direct fitment
  • Exact same part installed at the factory and sold at dealerships
  • Fitment: Confirm compatibility for your vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, and exact application. Match the part number where possible.
  • Maker and condition: Find out who made it and whether it is new, remanufactured, rebuilt, reconditioned, or salvage.
  • Coverage: Ask what the part warranty covers, how long it lasts, and whether labor is included. Some part warranties do not cover installation labor.
  • Total cost and terms: Compare the part price, installation charge, return terms, and availability.
  • Safety and compliance: For safety-related or regulated work, confirm that the part and repair meet requirements for the vehicle and location.

The cited consumer guidance does not support a blanket claim that OEM parts are always better, or that aftermarket parts are always equivalent or inferior. A specific part’s fit, construction, warranty, and intended use matter more than the label alone.

Does “new,” “remanufactured,” or “salvage” tell you whether a part is OEM?

No. These terms describe condition or history, not necessarily who made or supplied the part.

GM Genuine Parts 13227300 Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir Cap
  • Some GM Genuine Parts may have formerly appeared as ACDelco GM Original Equipment (OE)
  • GM Genuine Parts are designed, engineered and tested to rigorous standards, and are backed by General Motors
  • GM Engineers design and validate OE parts specifically for your Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac vehicle
  • GM regularly updates production and service part designs to integrate new materials and technologies
  • New: A new part may come from the vehicle manufacturer or an independent company. Ask for its maker and part number.
  • Remanufactured, rebuilt, or reconditioned: These terms generally mean a part has been restored to sound working condition. Ask what was repaired or replaced and what the warranty covers.
  • Salvage: A used part taken from another vehicle without alteration. Ask about its history and the seller’s coverage; reliability is seldom guaranteed.

These descriptions follow the FTC’s Auto Repair Basics guidance.

Will aftermarket parts void your vehicle warranty?

In the United States, using an aftermarket or recycled part does not automatically void your vehicle warranty. The FTC states, “Your warranty stays in effect if you use aftermarket or recycled parts.” If a defective part or incorrect installation damages a component covered by the warranty, the manufacturer or dealer may deny coverage for that damaged component only after showing that the part or installation caused the damage. Keep estimates, invoices, maintenance records, and repair orders. FTC: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts

FTC general warranty guidance says a manufacturer generally cannot require you to use specific parts or services to preserve warranty coverage unless they are provided free or the manufacturer obtains an FTC waiver. For an actual claim, consult the vehicle’s written warranty and the FTC’s auto-specific guidance; coverage depends on the terms and the circumstances. FTC: Warranties

What should you ask the repair shop?

  1. Ask for a written estimate identifying the part, its cost, the labor charge, and the work expected.
  2. Ask whether the estimate specifies an OEM or non-original-equipment part, and request the maker and part number.
  3. Confirm fitment for your exact vehicle and ask about the part’s condition, warranty, labor coverage, and return terms.
  4. When the work is complete, keep the repair order and receipts showing the parts used and charges paid.

State law may require disclosure about non-original equipment, so disclosure rules vary by state. The FTC also advises getting warranty scope in writing, particularly when labor may not be covered. See FTC: Auto Repair Basics.

What safety and location rules matter?

Requirements depend on the part, the work, and where the vehicle is used. In the United States, federal motor vehicle safety law can apply when a repair makes required safety equipment inoperative or leaves a vehicle noncompliant. NHTSA’s interpretation concerns those circumstances; it does not declare aftermarket parts generally unsafe or certify any particular part. For repairs involving brakes, lighting, restraints, emissions equipment, or other safety-related systems, check requirements for the exact vehicle and jurisdiction and use an appropriately qualified repairer. NHTSA interpretation on making safety equipment inoperative

UK government consumer guidance separately warns that fake or substandard parts can be difficult to identify and that parts from outside Europe may not meet applicable E-mark approvals. Those points concern the UK/European context and should not be treated as a universal rule for every market. UK Government: Consumer guidance on fake parts
