What is the NXP NCJ29D6?
The NCJ29D6 is a family of automotive semiconductors that combines secure, precise UWB ranging with short-range radar. NXP introduced the family in 2023 and describes it as a platform for access and sensing features in vehicles. In its August 4, 2026 announcement, NXP said BMW Group plans to use the family in selected 2026 vehicle programs.
For automakers, combining ranging and radar in one chip can support more than one feature set within a vehicle. NXP identifies hands-free digital-key access, child-presence detection and intrusion alerts among the potential applications. The announcement connects the BMW deployment to Digital Key Plus and presence detection, but does not specify which individual NCJ29D6 variant or feature will be fitted to each vehicle program.
How do the NCJ29D6A and NCJ29D6B differ?

The variants illustrate the family’s combination of access and sensing, but NXP’s BMW announcement does not identify which one is assigned to a particular vehicle or feature.

Does BMW Digital Key 3.0 use UWB?
BMW’s Digital Key Plus is a UWB-based implementation in the Digital Key 3.0 ecosystem. BMW introduced Digital Key Plus on the iX in 2021 and described work with Apple and the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to establish Digital Key specification 3.0 as a global automotive standard. NXP’s current UWB overview also identifies CCC Release 3.0 compliance as a design focus.
UWB lets a suitably equipped phone act as a proximity-aware key. When both the vehicle and device support the feature, the driver can approach and access the car without taking the phone out of a pocket or bag. The experience depends on supported vehicle and device configurations; the chip announcement alone does not establish compatibility for every BMW or phone.

What does the BMW announcement mean for owners?
The announcement is about an automaker’s planned use of an automotive chip in selected 2026 vehicle programs. It does not identify every affected model, trim, market, or delivery date, nor does it announce a way to add NCJ29D6 hardware to a BMW already on the road. Owners should check the feature and device compatibility information for their specific vehicle rather than infer availability from the chip family’s deployment.
NXP’s earlier NCJ29D5 announcement described BMW, Continental, NXP and other partners working through the CCC and IEEE on interoperability and standardization for smartphone access, remote parking and other UWB automotive applications. That standards work provides context for a broader ecosystem; it is not a promise that every implementation or feature works across all vehicles and devices.

Why combine digital-key ranging and radar?
UWB ranging can help a vehicle determine whether an authorized phone is nearby, while short-range radar can support sensing inside or around the vehicle. Integrating both capabilities in the NCJ29D6 family gives automakers a platform that NXP says can serve access and safety-related applications. The company’s broader claim is that one system can deliver multiple features: “NXP’s proven Trimension UWB platform maximizes value for OEMs, using a single system to deliver multiple new and differentiating features for drivers,” said Markus Staeblein, senior vice president and general manager, Secure Car Access, NXP Semiconductors.
