NXP and Rimac Technology Partner on Centralized Architectures for Software-Defined Vehicles

NXP Semiconductors and Rimac Technology announced a collaboration on June 12, 2025, to develop a centralized electronic-control architecture for software-defined vehicles. The planned ECU platform will consolidate more than 20 electronic control units into three centralized units, using NXP’s S32E2 real-time processor series. NXP named Rimac Technology the series’ first adopter.

What the NXP–Rimac announcement covers

The companies’ collaboration is focused on an upcoming next-generation ECU platform, not a consumer product currently available to buy. The architecture is intended to bring vehicle functions that are often handled by separate control units into a smaller number of centralized units. NXP says the platform is planned to debut in a Rimac hypercar program, with plans to scale it to other vehicle segments and alternative mobility sectors. The announcement does not name a production-car launch date or a specific vehicle model.

How many ECUs are being consolidated?

The announced architecture consolidates more than 20 electronic control units into three centralized units. This is a description of the planned Rimac platform, not a claim that every vehicle function or ECU across all vehicles will be replaced by three units. Consolidating control can reduce the number of separate units involved, but the companies did not publish a quantified comparison of wiring, weight, cost or performance against a named competing architecture.

What vehicle functions will the architecture support?

The platform is intended to support vehicle dynamics, charging control, energy and thermal management, and body electronics. Rimac’s described ECU applications include:

What the S32E2 processor contributes

NXP’s S32E2 series is designed for real-time automotive processing. NXP says the processor integrates eight Arm Cortex-R52 cores running at up to 1 GHz, supports up to 64 MB of non-volatile memory and includes high-resolution analog-to-digital converters. The announcement does not provide application-specific benchmark results for the Rimac platform.

Safety, isolation and security

NXP describes the S32E2 series as ISO 26262 ASIL D compliant. Its listed mechanisms include core-to-pin isolation and task-level fault recovery, intended to help isolate faults and manage tasks in safety-critical systems. NXP also lists an integrated Hardware Security Engine for secure boot, key management and other security services. These are vendor descriptions of the processor’s features, not independent test results for the planned vehicle platform.

Supporting components

NXP lists additional parts that can support a system built around the processor: FS86 ASIL D safety system basis chips, PF5030 power-management ICs, Ethernet switches and PHYs, CAN transceivers, GD3160 gate drivers and MC3377x battery-cell controllers. The announcement identifies these components as part of NXP’s supporting portfolio; it does not specify which exact parts Rimac will use in each centralized unit.

How centralized control differs from distributed vehicle electronics

In a distributed design, vehicle functions are handled by multiple separate ECUs; domain-based designs group functions by area or system. The announced Rimac approach takes consolidation further by bringing functions spanning dynamics, battery, charging and body systems into three centralized units. The stated ECU-count change provides a concrete measure of consolidation, but the companies have not published a controlled benchmark against a named distributed or domain-based design.

The practical trade-offs depend on implementation. Fewer separate control units can reduce system complexity, while centralizing more functions makes real-time scheduling, fault isolation, safety and security important design considerations. NXP points to task isolation, fault recovery and security features in the S32E2, alongside companion networking and power-management hardware. The announcement does not quantify comparative reliability, efficiency, cost savings or computational gains in the Rimac vehicle.

Can consumers buy the S32E2 system or an Amazon kit?

The announcement describes an automotive processor and an upcoming OEM ECU platform, not a retail device or consumer development kit. It provides no Amazon listing, retail price or consumer purchase channel for the Rimac architecture. Developers or automotive suppliers interested in the processor or support components should consult NXP’s official product and sales channels; the exact three-unit Rimac system is not presented as a product for individual buyers.

What has—and has not—been established

NXP and Rimac have announced a planned architecture, named the processor family and described intended vehicle functions and supporting technologies. NXP also says Rimac is the first adopter of S32E2. The public announcement does not establish a launch date, named customer list, independently tested performance result, measured efficiency improvement or confirmed consumer sales availability.
