Yamaha’s documented R1 special editions range from track-built GYTR machines to anniversary models whose production totals were not published in the sources cited here. The evidence supports eight notable factory editions—not ten comparable limited models—so this guide ranks those eight without padding the list with standard trims or race-team liveries.
How these R1 editions are ranked
The ranking weighs confirmed scarcity, mechanical changes, historical significance, intended use, and what is known about market availability. A stated production cap is stronger evidence of rarity than an anniversary paint scheme alone. “Limited edition” is not one uniform promise: the models below include unit-capped series, an order-window edition, and commemorative models with no production total stated in the cited Yamaha material.
The eight notable Yamaha YZF-R1 special editions
1. 2018 R1 GYTR 20th Anniversary
For the R1’s twentieth anniversary, Yamaha made a track-focused GYTR special limited to 20 motorcycles. Its equipment included a GYTR racing wire harness and ECU, Öhlins Racing suspension, carbon racing fairing, and titanium Akrapovič exhaust. The white-and-red livery recalled the Yamaha Factory Racing R1 associated with four consecutive Suzuka 8 Hours wins from 2014 through 2018. This is a genuine low-volume, competition-oriented special, not simply an anniversary color option. 2. R1 GYTR PRO 25th Anniversary
Yamaha Motor Europe commissioned 25 hand-assembled machines for the R1’s 25th anniversary, equipped with its full GYTR PRO package. The listed components include Magneti Marelli electronics, I2M GPS instrumentation, Marchesini wheels, Öhlins FGR400 forks and YA969 rear shock, carbon bodywork, Akrapovič exhaust, Suter racing clutch, Brembo brakes, and GYTR engine parts. Its extensive race hardware and 25-machine series make it the most specialized entry here, though it is a track-oriented machine rather than an ordinary road R1 with commemorative paint. The French page’s allocation of two bikes to two named French shops is local distribution detail, not the overall production figure. 3. 2006 YZF-R1 SP
The SP was built with Superstock racing in mind. Yamaha says it retained the stock R1 engine but added a slipper clutch, lightweight forged-aluminium Marchesini wheels, and custom Öhlins suspension with rear ride-height adjustment. Yamaha also says the suspension was developed by the team behind its YZR-M1 MotoGP bike. Its gun-smoke livery was produced in a European run limited to 500 units, giving this SP both meaningful chassis upgrades and a clearly stated regional cap. 4. 2012 YZF-R1 WGP 50th Anniversary Edition
This edition marked 50 years of Yamaha Grand Prix participation with red-and-white graphics inspired by the company’s 1960s and 1970s race machines. Yamaha Japan announced a limit of 120 units for the Japan market, with sales beginning February 28, 2012; that figure should not be read as a global production total. The 2012 R1 also introduced traction control, although that model-year feature was not exclusive to the anniversary edition. 5. 2026 YZF-R1 70th Anniversary Edition
Yamaha Japan announced this edition on January 15, 2026, for the 70th anniversary of Yamaha Motor’s founding in 1955. The announcement gives a 200-unit limit and a scheduled release date of January 30, 2026. Those figures describe the Japan-market announcement; the cited sources do not establish a worldwide production total. Yamaha’s news index and current Japan R1 model page list the edition. 6. 2022 R1 World GP 60th Anniversary
Yamaha Japan presented this as a commemorative color edition for 60 years of Grand Prix racing. Its white-and-red colors drew on the 1980 YZR500, with an anniversary emblem, gold wheels, and black-finished brake and clutch levers. Orders were accepted in Japan from October 8 through November 8, 2021, with release scheduled for February 28, 2022; Yamaha described it as an exclusive model sold through YSP and advance dealers. The sources establish an order window, not a worldwide production cap. 7. 2006 Yamaha Motor Company 50th Anniversary R1
The yellow-and-black speed-block scheme paid tribute to Kenny Roberts and Yamaha Motor’s 50th anniversary. Yamaha’s history page also notes Öhlins suspension, forged Marchesini wheels, and an integrated lap timer. The sources cited here do not state a production cap, so it is best described as a special anniversary edition rather than assigned a rarity number. Yamaha’s 2006 release confirms the anniversary Inter-color scheme in the European model range. 8. 2016 Yamaha Motor Company 60th Anniversary R1
This anniversary R1 paired yellow-and-black speed-block graphics with bronze wheels and a lightweight Akrapovič slip-on muffler. The livery links it to Yamaha’s racing heritage, but the cited history page does not state a production total. Which editions matter most to collectors and riders?
- For documented scarcity: the 20-bike 2018 GYTR and 25-machine GYTR PRO are the smallest stated series in this group. Their scarcity comes with specialized track equipment, not just a distinctive paint scheme.
- For a road-derived chassis special: the 2006 SP stands out for its slipper clutch, forged wheels, and Öhlins suspension, alongside the Europe-only 500-unit limit.
- For Yamaha racing history: the 2012 WGP and 2022 World GP editions celebrate Grand Prix heritage, but their documented availability is Japan-specific; the 2022 model is defined by its order window rather than a stated cap.
- For anniversary graphics: the 2006, 2016, and 2026 editions are meaningful commemoratives, but absent production totals for the first two, their rarity should not be assumed from the anniversary branding alone.
Yamaha’s selected race-entry anniversary liveries are separate from retail limited editions. In particular, the 2018 20-bike GYTR is a distinct factory special, not every competition R1 carrying twentieth-anniversary graphics.
