The North Tarrant Express (NTE) Capacity Improvement Project was announced complete on September 24, 2026, months ahead of its original early-2027 target. For drivers, the key distinction is that the new Loop 820 lanes are free general-purpose lanes, while the new Airport Freeway lanes are tolled TEXpress managed lanes. The $414 million project added capacity across about 10 miles in Northeast Tarrant County.
Where did the NTE expansion add lanes?
The project covered portions of I-820 and SH 183/121, also known as Airport Freeway, between Fort Worth and Euless. The completion announcement says the work crossed six municipalities in Northeast Tarrant County.
| Road and segment | What was added | Lane type |
|---|---|---|
| Loop 820, from Riverside Drive in Fort Worth to Texas Boulevard 26 in North Richland Hills | One lane in each direction | Free general-purpose lanes |
| Airport Freeway (SH 183/121), from Bedford-Euless Road in North Richland Hills to FM 157/Industrial Boulevard in Euless | One lane in each direction | Tolled TEXpress managed lanes |
These are two different additions on separate corridor segments, not a single lane type applied across the entire project. The endpoints are useful for identifying where the additions were made; the announcement does not provide a live lane-opening advisory or current traffic conditions.
Which new lanes are free and which are tolled?
The added Loop 820 lanes are free general-purpose lanes. The added Airport Freeway lanes are TEXpress managed lanes and are tolled. The project announcement does not state current toll rates, so drivers should not treat any toll amount as fixed based on this project description.

Is the I-820 expansion open?
TEXpress Highways announced the project complete on September 24, 2026, and described the work as finished months ahead of its early-2027 target. That supports the project-level completion date, but it is not a real-time lane-status update. For a specific trip, check an official current traffic source for closures or restrictions before departure.
How much did it cost, and who paid?
The stated project cost was $414 million. TEXpress Highways said toll revenues funded the design and construction of this capacity-improvement project, with no public-sector or taxpayer money used for that work. This funding statement concerns the expansion itself; it should not be generalized to other NTE projects.

What changed for traffic, and what has not been measured?
TEXpress Highways’ September 2026 completion announcement reported that average daily traffic on the Airport Freeway and Loop 820 corridors had risen by more than 25% since pre-construction levels in 2009. It also reported average speeds of 45 mph in general-purpose lanes and 70 mph in TEXpress managed lanes, including during peak rush hours. Those are figures reported by the project sponsor, not an independent evaluation of how much the completed expansion changed congestion or travel times.
TxDOT Fort Worth district engineer David Salazar characterized the project’s expected benefits as outweighing construction disruption, including for commuters, residents and first responders. That is his assessment; the announcement does not quantify a safety or travel-time outcome attributable to the completed work.

What was the construction schedule?
Construction began in late 2023, and the completion announcement dated September 24, 2026 said the project finished months before its original early-2027 target. It did not specify an exact number of months early.
A December 2023 North Central Texas Council of Governments newsletter had described the $414 million project as funded by NTE TEXpress lane toll revenues, identified the added free and tolled lanes, and forecast completion in early 2027. It listed a planned 42-month duration, not the actual elapsed construction time. The newsletter also said most construction activities were expected overnight and noted ramp and connector adjustments and work on the pedestrian bridge in Hurst; those were elements of the historical plan, not current closure information.
The project was managed by North Tarrant Infrastructure, a joint venture of Ferrovial Construction and Webber. Its CEO, Ignacio Milans, cited inclement weather and construction blackouts associated with major events, including the FIFA World Cup, when discussing delivery ahead of schedule.
