How is this different from earlier retractable-stud ideas?
Nokian previously showed a retractable-stud concept in which the driver could press a button to raise or retract the studs. The Hakkapeliitta 01 is presented as a production tire that makes the adjustment automatically, rather than relying on that driver-operated control. Patents have also proposed selectively deployable studs using pneumatic chambers, pumps, and valves. Those proposals are technical concepts, not evidence that a particular patented design reached the market. US patent publication US20160167445A1 is one example.
When and where is the Hakkapeliitta 01 expected to be available?
Nokian announced consumer availability for autumn 2026, with Nordic countries and North America as the main markets. The company says production will take place at its Nokia, Finland factory. This is an announced schedule, not confirmation that a tire is currently in stock in a particular location. The tire carries the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake and Ice Grip symbols, according to Nokian.
