Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A clunk, squeak, rattle or creak can point a technician toward a suspension or nearby component, but the sound alone cannot identify a failed part. Note when it happens and whether steering, braking or handling has changed. If the noise persists—or the vehicle wanders, feels loose or has uneven tire wear—arrange an inspection rather than replacing a part based on a sound description.
What suspension noises can—and cannot—tell you
Suspension parts work alongside steering, brakes and other hardware, and their sounds can overlap. Links, bushings, mounts, joints, springs, brake hardware and nearby components may all produce noises that seem to come from the suspension. The same sound can have more than one cause, so treat it as a clue for inspection, not a diagnosis. iFixit’s guide to diagnosing suspension knocks discusses possible sources; General Motors’ Noise Issues Part 2 – Repair Techniques emphasizes the role of operating conditions.
Match the sound to the conditions
These patterns can help describe the problem and direct an inspection. None confirms a defective component on its own.
| What you notice | Possible area to inspect | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Intermittent knock over bumps | Sway-bar links or nearby suspension hardware | The pattern does not prove a link is defective. |
| Metallic thump or rubbery squeak over uneven roads or while turning | Shock or strut mount and related parts | Other components can transmit the sound. |
| Knock or creak while maneuvering or crossing bumps, especially with drifting or tire wear | Ball joint or other steering and suspension joints | Have the joints and steering inspected promptly; do not infer a replacement part from symptoms alone. |
| Creaking or an unusual steering feel | Bushings or other steering and suspension components | The source and loading conditions matter. |
| Grunt over a speed bump or large dip at low speed | A stabilizer bushing is one possibility | General Motors’ job aid treats this as something to verify, not a certain diagnosis. |
| Rattle or click that changes when you apply the brakes | Brake hardware may be involved | A sound that seems suspension-related can come from an adjacent system. |
Why the timing and apparent side matter
Write down whether the sound occurs over bumps, while turning, during braking or acceleration, or at a particular steering angle. Also note the road surface and speed. A technician may need to reproduce the conditions: as General Motors puts it in its 2019 job aid, “Because the chassis is a dynamic system, components may be in loaded or unloaded when they generate the noise.” A vehicle raised on a lift has its suspension at full drop, so parts may be loaded differently than they are on the road.

The side where you hear a noise is not always the side where its source sits. A General Motors diagnostic tip says to check the opposite shock or strut if normal diagnostic steps do not locate a front suspension noise. That tip applies to specified Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra and Yukon model years; it is not a universal rule for all vehicles. See the GM PIT5049C diagnostic tip for its vehicle-specific scope.
What to do before and during an inspection
- Record the symptom. Note the sound, where you perceive it, the road surface, vehicle speed, steering angle, and whether braking or acceleration changes it. A short recording can help explain the symptom, but it cannot replace an inspection.
- Check vehicle-specific guidance. Consult the owner’s manual and service information for your vehicle, especially if it has adaptive or air suspension.
- Describe the pattern to a qualified technician. Include any recent hard impact and the conditions that make the noise repeat. A dynamic noise may not be apparent when the vehicle is stationary or lifted.
- Do not work beneath an inadequately supported vehicle. Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack or try to force suspension components while the vehicle is unsupported.
When to get help promptly
Arrange a prompt inspection if the noise accompanies steering looseness, wandering, a wheel that appears misaligned, or uneven tire wear. These symptoms can occur with steering or joint problems and should not be dismissed as an annoyance. If the noise followed a hard impact, have the vehicle checked. If control feels compromised, stop driving and seek assistance.
