No—Subaru has not ended all American production. Current information from Subaru and Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) shows that the Lafayette, Indiana, plant remains active and continues to build Subaru vehicles. SIA currently lists the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester in its production lineup.
The confusing claim appears to combine an older, temporary production stoppage with more recent model changes. Subaru did temporarily halt production at its Indiana facility in April 2021 because of the global semiconductor shortage. That was a supply-related pause, not a permanent withdrawal from U.S. manufacturing.
What Subaru’s current information actually shows
Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette is still the company’s U.S. manufacturing site. Subaru describes SIA as the home of North American Subaru production and its only manufacturing facility outside Japan. The plant’s current statistics list the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester as production models.
SIA reports monthly capacity of 32,956 vehicles, based on an eight-hour, single-shift schedule. Capacity is not the same as actual monthly output, but it is direct evidence that the facility remains an operating production site rather than a closed plant. See Subaru’s company information and SIA’s current plant statistics.

Which Subaru models are currently built in Indiana?
Production assignments can vary by model year, powertrain, and trim. The available 2026 information supports the following specific conclusions:
| Model | What the current information says |
|---|---|
| 2026 Ascent | Subaru says every 2026 Ascent is built in the United States at the Lafayette, Indiana, facility. See the 2026 Ascent page. |
| 2026 Crosstrek | Subaru identifies the Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness gas trims as assembled in America. The page lists hybrid versions separately, so the statement should not be extended to every Crosstrek variant. See Subaru’s 2026 Crosstrek lineup. |
| 2026 Forester | Subaru’s 2026 consumer material identifies Lafayette, Indiana, as the assembly location. See the company’s 2026 Forester consumer document. |
These references do not mean that every Subaru sold in the United States is assembled in Indiana. They also do not establish that every trim, hybrid, or future model will use the same plant. Assembly locations can change between model years and configurations.
Where the “Subaru stopped production” claim likely came from
The wording resembles reports from April 2021, when SIA temporarily stopped production through the end of the month because of the worldwide semiconductor shortage. A contemporary report described the Indiana shutdown as a temporary response to the shortage—not as a plant closure or an end to Subaru manufacturing in America. The 2021 report should therefore be read as historical coverage.

Subaru also announced temporary production suspensions at U.S. and Japanese facilities during the COVID-19 period in 2020. Temporary pauses caused by parts shortages, public-health restrictions, maintenance, or other operational problems are not the same thing as a permanent manufacturing exit.
Why a model ending production does not mean the plant closed
Another possible source of confusion is the discontinuation of the Subaru Legacy. The sixth-generation Legacy ended production after the 2025 model year, according to Car and Driver’s report.
That is a model-level decision. It does not show that Subaru closed SIA or stopped building all vehicles in the United States. A manufacturer can discontinue one vehicle, move a model to another facility, or change its production mix while keeping the plant open for other products. SIA’s current production listing of the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester is consistent with that distinction.

Three claims that should not be confused
1. “Subaru stopped all American production”
This would mean Subaru permanently ended vehicle manufacturing in the United States. Current official evidence does not support that claim.
2. “Subaru temporarily halted production in Indiana”
This was true in April 2021 during the semiconductor shortage. It was a temporary supply-related interruption, not a permanent shutdown.

3. “A particular Subaru model or trim is no longer built in Indiana”
This can be true without affecting the plant’s overall operation. Model assignments and assembly locations are narrower questions and must be checked for the specific model year, powertrain, and trim.

What this means for people shopping for a Subaru
If you are trying to determine where a particular vehicle was assembled, do not rely on a headline claiming that Subaru has stopped U.S. production. Check the exact model year and configuration in Subaru’s current specifications and consumer materials. A vehicle’s assembly location is not necessarily the same as the origin of every component, and U.S. assembly does not mean that every Subaru component was manufactured domestically.
For 2026, the available official material supports U.S. assembly for every Ascent, selected gas Crosstrek trims, and the Forester as identified by Subaru’s consumer documentation. The production status of other Subaru models, hybrid variants, and future model years should be treated separately rather than inferred from those examples.

As of the information available on August 12, 2026, Subaru has not stopped all U.S. production. Its Lafayette, Indiana, facility remains active, and Subaru continues to identify vehicles built or assembled there. The April 2021 Indiana stoppage was temporary and tied to the semiconductor shortage, while the Legacy’s end after the 2025 model year was a model discontinuation—not the closure of Subaru’s American manufacturing operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Subaru permanently close its Indiana plant?
No. Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette remains the company’s North American production site. Current SIA information lists the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester as production models.
Was Subaru production ever stopped in the United States?
Yes, temporarily. SIA halted production through the end of April 2021 because of the global semiconductor shortage. That event was not a permanent withdrawal from U.S. manufacturing.
Are all Subaru vehicles sold in America built in Indiana?
No. Subaru’s statements apply to particular models and configurations. For 2026, Subaru says every Ascent is built in the United States, while selected gas Crosstrek trims are assembled in America and the Forester is identified with Lafayette assembly. Those statements should not be expanded to every U.S.-market Subaru or every trim.
Did ending the Subaru Legacy mean Subaru stopped American production?
No. The Legacy ended production after the 2025 model year, but that was a model discontinuation. SIA continues to produce other Subaru vehicles.

The headline is false as a current claim. Subaru’s Indiana plant remains active. The historical April 2021 production pause was temporary, and the Legacy’s discontinuation was a model change—not the end of Subaru manufacturing in America.
