BlueCruise 1.2 added Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning to eligible 2024 trucks, while BlueCruise 1.4 further refines in-lane behavior and is standard software on factory-equipped 2025 F-150 trucks. The improvement is less interruption on mapped highways, not permission to stop paying attention.
What actually got better
The refreshed F-150’s BlueCruise system is better at staying composed on a long, mapped highway drive. It can change lanes after the driver taps the turn signal, and it can subtly move away from a large vehicle in the neighboring lane without leaving its own lane.

That is the useful story behind the “No Hands” headline. It is not a self-driving F-150. BlueCruise remains an SAE Level 2 driver-assistance system: the driver must watch the road, remain attentive, and be ready to take control immediately. Hands-free operation is limited to designated Blue Zones, generally prequalified sections of divided highways.

Ford introduced these major changes as BlueCruise 1.2 on eligible 2024 F-150 trucks. Ford’s later BlueCruise 1.4 software builds on them, with additional claims about in-lane stability and longer hands-free engagement. Ford says 2025 F-150 trucks began shipping with version 1.4, while eligible 2024 owners are being moved from 1.2 to 1.4 through a rollout announced for 2026.

BlueCruise 1.2’s two important additions
Lane Change Assist
With Lane Change Assist, the driver taps the turn signal and the truck can complete the lane change if the path is clear. That is a meaningful reduction in friction on a highway where a slower vehicle needs to be passed. Instead of taking over for every pass, the driver can request the maneuver while continuing to supervise it.
The word request matters. Tapping the signal does not turn the driver’s responsibility over to the truck. The driver still needs to check the surrounding traffic, watch the maneuver, and be prepared to steer or cancel the operation if conditions change. The system may not perform the maneuver if it cannot determine that the lane change is appropriate.
In-Lane Repositioning
In-Lane Repositioning is a smaller movement with a noticeable comfort benefit. When a large vehicle such as a semi-truck occupies the adjacent lane, the F-150 can move slightly away from it while remaining inside its own lane.
This is not a lane change and it is not permission for the truck to cross a lane line. It is a lateral adjustment intended to create more breathing room from a nearby large vehicle. The driver must still watch for lane narrowing, construction, motorcycles, debris, poor markings, and traffic on both sides.
Why BlueCruise 1.4 can feel more natural
The practical improvement is continuity. Earlier driver-assistance systems could feel hesitant or require more frequent intervention in curves, narrow lanes, or situations involving a large vehicle next door. A system that holds its position more consistently and handles an ordinary highway pass with less interruption feels less like a feature that must be managed every few minutes.
Ford’s technical material describes BlueCruise 1.4 as improving in-lane stability and extending hands-free engagement compared with version 1.0. It also describes Lane Change Assist, In-Lane Repositioning, and one-button activation when specified settings are enabled. Exact controls and availability can vary by vehicle configuration and software state, so the truck’s own prompts and model-specific manual take priority.
Ford’s bulletin also cites an “eight times longer” hands-free comparison and an “over 4x” comparison for stability. Those are Ford internal-test comparisons, not independent road-test results. They should be read as evidence of the improvement Ford is claiming, not as a guarantee that every owner will experience eight times as much uninterrupted driving on every route.

| Truck or software | What Ford’s timeline indicates | What shoppers and owners should verify |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 launch | BlueCruise launched on eligible F-150 and Mustang Mach-E vehicles with the required hardware and software pathway. | The truck must be an equipped, eligible configuration; the model year alone does not establish that it has BlueCruise. |
| 2022–2023 F-150 | Ford later offered BlueCruise 1.4 enhancements to some equipped vehicles through service and/or over-the-air update paths. | Eligibility can depend on hardware, modem, activation, and the vehicle’s update path. |
| 2024 F-150 | Ford announced BlueCruise 1.2 for the refreshed F-150, adding Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning. | Not every 2024 F-150 necessarily has the hardware, subscription status, or software version required for BlueCruise. |
| 2025 F-150 | Ford says BlueCruise 1.4 began shipping from the factory on the 2025 model-year F-150. | Confirm the specific truck’s equipment and installed software rather than relying only on a sales listing or trim name. |
| 2026 rollout | Ford announced a rollout moving eligible 2024 F-150 customers from version 1.2 to version 1.4. | An announcement does not mean every eligible truck has already updated. Check the individual vehicle’s status. |
This makes the version question more complicated than simply asking whether an F-150 is a 2024 or 2025 model. A 2024 truck may have 1.2, may later qualify for 1.4, or may not have the required BlueCruise equipment at all. A 2025 truck is more likely to have 1.4 from the factory, but the particular vehicle’s equipment and activation status still matter.

What “hands-free” means—and what it does not mean
BlueCruise combines several assistance functions:
- Adaptive cruise control to manage speed and following distance.
- Lane-centering behavior to help keep the truck positioned in its lane.
- Mapping that identifies roads where Ford permits the hands-free operating mode.
- A driver-facing camera that monitors eye gaze and head position.
When the truck is in an eligible Blue Zone and BlueCruise is active, the driver may remove their hands from the steering wheel. The driver may not remove their attention from the road. The camera is there to check driver engagement, not to make the system eyes-off or autonomous.
The truck can request that the driver take over. A prompt, changing road conditions, a blocked or poorly marked lane, a construction zone, bad weather, or an unusual traffic situation can all make continued assistance inappropriate. The driver needs to be able to resume steering, braking, and speed control without delay.
Outside a mapped Blue Zone, the hands-free mode may be unavailable. Even within one, performance can be affected by inclement weather, lane visibility, mapping limitations, and other conditions that interfere with sensing or driver monitoring. “Hands-free” therefore describes one narrowly defined operating mode; it does not describe the F-150 as a vehicle that can drive itself anywhere.
How the new features change a highway drive
Passing slower traffic
On a clear, well-marked highway, Lane Change Assist can reduce the number of times the driver must interrupt BlueCruise to pass. The driver still decides whether passing is sensible and continues watching the adjacent lane, but the system can carry out the requested lane change when its conditions are met.
This is more convenient than a system that only maintains the current lane. It is not the same as asking the truck to choose a destination, plan a route, or make unrestricted driving decisions.
Being passed by a semi-truck
In-Lane Repositioning addresses a common discomfort with lane-centering systems: the feeling that the vehicle is holding an exact line while a large truck is only a few feet away. A slight move toward the opposite side of the lane can make the situation feel less cramped without requiring the F-150 to make a lane change.
Drivers should not interpret that movement as a promise that the truck will always create the ideal amount of clearance. A narrow lane, a barrier, another vehicle, or a temporary lane pattern can leave little room for adjustment. Supervision remains essential.
Curves and long stretches
Ford’s claimed improvement in in-lane stability is most relevant to the small corrections and continuity that determine whether a driver-assistance system feels relaxed or fussy. The dossier does not include an independent road test of the refreshed F-150, so the defensible conclusion is limited: the newer software is designed to reduce hesitation and interruptions, and Ford reports improved results in its own comparisons.

How to find out which BlueCruise version an F-150 has
Do not infer the software version from the model year, a used-truck listing, or the presence of a generic driver-assistance package. Before buying or relying on the feature:
- Confirm the hardware and configuration. Verify that the truck is equipped for BlueCruise and that its model-year configuration is eligible.
- Check the Ford app or Ford account. Ford’s current owner information can show service status and eligibility, although labels and available details can vary.
- Check the vehicle’s software or settings screens. Look for the installed BlueCruise version and relevant activation information. The exact menu names can vary by vehicle and software release.
- Ask a Ford dealer to verify the VIN. Dealer records can help resolve questions about hardware, modem status, updates, activation, or an update that has not yet reached the truck.
- Check the route. A vehicle can have the right software and still be unable to operate hands-free on a road that is not a mapped Blue Zone.
For the operational details, a model-specific reference such as the 2024 Ford F-150 Owner’s Manual is worth keeping nearby. It is useful for the truck’s warnings, controls, activation conditions, and limitations, but buying a manual does not add BlueCruise hardware or upgrade the software.
What BlueCruise costs after the trial
Ford’s current U.S. BlueCruise information lists three post-trial or purchase paths where available:
| Option | Ford-listed price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $49.99 per month | Availability and terms can vary by vehicle and purchase channel. |
| Annual | $495 per year | This is an access plan, not proof that every F-150 is eligible. |
| One-time purchase | $2,495 where available | Do not assume it is offered on every truck or transferable to another vehicle. |
Ford also describes a 90-day trial beginning at the vehicle’s warranty start date. Included trial periods, pricing, eligibility, and purchase choices can vary by model year, configuration, and sales channel, so these should be treated as Ford-listed prices at the time of checking rather than permanent guarantees.
At simple list-price math, $2,495 is roughly five years of the $495 annual plan. Ford markets the one-time option using a seven-year comparison, which may make sense for someone planning to keep the same eligible truck for many years. That comparison does not establish that the one-time purchase transfers to a new truck or remains available on every configuration.

The technology also deserves a clear safety qualification. NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24012 after reports involving collisions and Ford BlueCruise. The agency says the evaluation will examine the system’s performance of the dynamic driving task and its driver-monitoring function.
A preliminary evaluation is not a recall, a final finding that BlueCruise is defective, or a determination that every reported incident involved a system failure. It is nevertheless important context for anyone deciding how much trust to place in a hands-free assistance system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe appropriate takeaway is straightforward: BlueCruise can reduce workload on qualifying highways, but it does not remove the need for an alert driver. A driver who looks away, falls asleep, uses a phone, or assumes that the system will handle an unusual situation is using it outside the role Ford describes.

Should you seek out a 2024 or 2025 F-150 with BlueCruise?
BlueCruise is most compelling for drivers who regularly cover long stretches of divided highway and are comfortable treating it as supervised assistance. The newer lane-change and repositioning functions address two of the most noticeable interruptions in highway driving, while version 1.4 is intended to make the system more stable and less demanding.
It is less persuasive as a reason to pay a large premium for a truck that will mostly be used in town, on winding two-lane roads, in construction zones, or on routes outside mapped Blue Zones. It also should not be the deciding factor if a buyer expects a self-driving vehicle. No current version described here offers eyes-off operation or hands-off driving everywhere.
For a used 2024 F-150, verify the actual vehicle rather than trusting the year. Confirm the equipment, installed software version, trial or subscription status, and route coverage. For a 2025 truck, ask the seller to show the vehicle’s BlueCruise status and confirm that the advertised feature is active on that VIN.

The bottom line on the refreshed F-150
The refreshed F-150’s BlueCruise story is a software-evolution story, not an autonomy breakthrough. BlueCruise 1.2 added Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning to eligible 2024 trucks. BlueCruise 1.4 carries those ideas forward with Ford-reported improvements in stability and engagement, reaches the factory on 2025 F-150 trucks, and is being rolled out to eligible 2024 owners.
Those changes can make a long mapped-highway drive less tiring and less interrupted. They do not change the driver’s job: watch the road, understand the system’s limits, and take over whenever the situation demands it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Ford F-150 drive itself with no hands?
No. BlueCruise is an SAE Level 2 driver-assistance system. In a qualifying mapped Blue Zone, the driver may remove their hands from the wheel, but must continue watching the road and be ready to take over immediately. It is not an eyes-off system.
Which F-150 trucks have BlueCruise 1.4?
Ford introduced BlueCruise 1.2 on eligible 2024 F-150 trucks. Ford says 2025 F-150 trucks began shipping with version 1.4, and it announced a rollout moving eligible 2024 trucks from 1.2 to 1.4. Some equipped 2022–2023 trucks may also qualify for 1.4 updates. The exact vehicle status must be checked through Ford’s app or account, the vehicle’s software screens, or a dealer.

How much does Ford BlueCruise cost?
Ford’s current U.S. BlueCruise information lists $49.99 per month, $495 per year, or a $2,495 one-time purchase where available. Ford also describes a 90-day trial beginning at the vehicle’s warranty start date. Pricing, eligibility, included periods, and purchase options vary by model year, configuration, and purchase channel.
Is BlueCruise under investigation?
NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24012 after reports involving collisions and Ford BlueCruise. The evaluation is examining the system’s dynamic-driving-task performance and driver monitoring. It is not, by itself, a recall or a final finding that BlueCruise is defective.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: BlueCruise 1.2 and 1.4 make the F-150’s supervised highway assistance more fluid, especially through Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning. But “no hands” applies only in mapped Blue Zones and never means eyes-off or self-driving. Verify the individual truck’s hardware, software version, activation, and route coverage before paying extra for the feature.
