Possibly—but Nissan’s financial losses do not prove that its cars were discounted, or that any discount was caused by the company’s troubles. Nissan’s FY2024 results showed significant financial pressure, while the company also had ¥1.498 trillion in automotive net cash. Its recovery plan set cost and profitability targets, not retail price cuts. To tell whether a Nissan was a good deal in 2025, shoppers needed to compare local offers and the full cost of buying.
What Nissan’s FY2024 results showed
Nissan’s fiscal year 2024 ended March 31, 2025; the company announced its results on May 13, 2025. It reported 3.346 million global sales, ¥12.6 trillion in consolidated revenue, ¥69.8 billion in operating profit and a ¥670.9 billion net loss. Automotive free cash flow was negative ¥242.8 billion, while automotive net cash was ¥1.498 trillion. Nissan’s FY2024 results show both considerable strain and a substantial net-cash position—not that the company was out of cash.
Nissan said intensified sales competition affected global sales. In the results presentation, its CFO cited lower volumes, weaker sales mix, pricing pressure and increased costs as reasons operating profit fell. The presentation also reported more than ¥460 billion in impairment charges and close to ¥60 billion in restructuring costs. Those figures describe corporate pressures; they are not measures of a buyer’s discount.
Why a corporate loss does not guarantee a cheaper car
A net loss is a company-wide accounting result, not a required price reduction at every dealership. The available financial statements do not specify what dealers charged, what incentives were available, or how much of any savings reached customers. They also do not identify a Nissan model as a bargain or establish that a retail discount in 2025 resulted from Nissan’s financial position.

So the headline’s “gain” is a possibility to check against a specific local offer—not a reported outcome. A Nissan could be a good buy if its complete deal compares favorably with alternatives, but the company’s losses alone cannot answer that question.
What Nissan’s recovery plan set out to do
In 2025, Nissan announced Re:Nissan, a recovery plan that targeted ¥500 billion in total cost savings versus FY2024, positive operating profitability and free cash flow in the automotive business by FY2026, and a reduction in vehicle production plants from 17 to 10 by FY2027. These were targets announced by the company, not completed results or promises of lower showroom prices. Nissan president and CEO Ivan Espinosa said the company needed to “prioritize self-improvement with greater urgency and speed, aiming for profitability that relies less on volume.” That statement describes Nissan’s priorities at the time, not proof of what the plan would achieve. What changed in Nissan’s FY2025 results
Nissan announced FY2025 results on May 13, 2026. It reported ¥58.0 billion in operating profit and a ¥533.1 billion net loss. Full-year automotive free cash flow remained negative at ¥480.8 billion, although it was positive ¥112 billion in the second half. Compared with FY2024, operating profit improved, but the company still reported a net loss and negative full-year automotive free cash flow. - Compare out-the-door prices. Ask for the total, including taxes, dealer fees and add-ons, after any incentives you qualify for. A low advertised price may not reflect the final bill.
- Separate rebates from financing. Compare a cash incentive with the financing APR and total interest over the loan term. A discount can be offset by less favorable financing, and the best cash price may require giving up a promotional loan rate.
- Check inventory and competing offers. Look at available vehicles and ask for written quotes on comparable cars from other dealers. A vehicle’s time in inventory may inform negotiation, but it is not proof of a discount.
- Verify warranty coverage and availability. Compare the warranty terms that apply to the exact vehicle and confirm the car is available on the stated terms.
- Compare the same specifications. Match model year, trim, equipment and region before calling one offer cheaper. Differences in features or local fees can distort a comparison.
