What Nissan has confirmed about the next GT-R
The R35 GT-R ended production in August 2025 after an 18-year run. Nissan said about 48,000 cars were produced and sold over the model’s lifecycle. The final car was a Japan-market Premium edition T-Spec finished in Midnight Purple. Nissan’s August 26, 2025 announcement also made clear that ending the R35 did not mean ending the nameplate. Espinosa said, “While we don’t have a precise plan finalized today, the GT-R will evolve and reemerge in the future.”
On April 14, 2026, Espinosa told The Drive, “Yes, we are actually working already on the GT-R.” He said a new car would carry the credibility and credentials associated with the GT-R name, but offered few details. That confirms development is underway; it does not mean Nissan has revealed a finished successor or committed to a release schedule.
When could the R36 GT-R arrive?
Nissan has not announced a showroom date. At the 2026 New York auto show, Nissan North America senior vice president and chief planning officer Ponz Pandikuthira said he hoped for concrete announcements by 2028, potentially including a timeline for when a car could reach showrooms. He described that as an expectation, not a company launch commitment, and linked the planning uncertainty to the future direction of emissions rules and policy.

Pandikuthira also said, “I’d say by 2028 you’ll see some concrete announcements, and hopefully before the decade turns you’ll see an R36 GT-R.” “Before the decade turns” is his hope for the car’s arrival, not a confirmed Nissan deadline. The R36 label is commonly used for the expected successor, but the cited statements do not establish it as a finalized production name.
What might power the next GT-R?
Nissan has not announced a final powertrain. In a separate interview published April 2, 2026, Pandikuthira discussed a new chassis and a mostly new powertrain, with the possibility of retaining the R35’s VR38 engine block while changing other components. He also said, “The next generation GTR will need some level of electrification.” The Drive’s report presents these as development possibilities, not published specifications.

That leaves important questions open: Nissan has not confirmed whether the successor will be a hybrid, whether it will reuse the VR38 block, or whether it will use a full battery-electric powertrain. Electrification is an indication from Pandikuthira; the precise system and hardware remain unannounced.

What R35 owners and fans should take from the announcement
The R35 is discontinued, but Nissan has said the GT-R nameplate will return and its CEO says development is active. For now, the useful distinction is between that confirmed direction and the details still unresolved: there is no announced successor for sale, fixed launch date, or final specification sheet. Treat references to hybrid hardware, the VR38 block, an R36, and a pre-2030 arrival as provisional unless Nissan confirms them in a formal product announcement.
