The Nissan ZEOD RC was a Garage 56 technology demonstrator at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans, built to show how a race car could use electric power for a full lap within an endurance-racing stint. Nissan reported that it completed that electric lap during warm-up and exceeded 300 km/h on the Mulsanne Straight. It did not finish the race: Nissan later attributed its early retirement to a gearbox issue.
What does ZEOD RC stand for?
Nissan expanded ZEOD RC as “Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car.” The name captured the central idea: use electric power when called for, rather than run the car solely on electricity. Nissan entered it in Le Mans 2014 in Garage 56, the event’s slot for innovative technology outside the conventional race classification.
It was an experimental racing prototype, not a production-car hybrid. Nissan framed the project as a way to explore electric propulsion in endurance racing and gather knowledge for future motorsport development.
How was the ZEOD RC meant to use electric power?
Nissan described a dual-power strategy. The electric motors were intended to propel the car for one lap per fuel stint; the petrol engine would handle the remaining laps. In an interview with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), driver Lucas Ordóñez said the team normally expected to run 11 or 12 laps on the petrol engine, depending on conditions, before switching to electric mode for a lap. That was the driver’s account of the planned approach, not a fixed rule applicable to every stint.

The arrangement made the electric lap the experiment’s defining test: could the car complete a full lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe under electric propulsion, then continue its endurance-running strategy using the combustion engine?
What powered the Nissan ZEOD RC?
The combustion engine was Nissan’s DIG-T R, a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit. In its 2014 announcement, Nissan specified 400 horsepower and a weight of 40 kilograms for that engine. Those are manufacturer-announced figures for the engine itself; they do not describe the complete powertrain or establish the car’s total output.

Nissan’s description also included two electric motors. The available figures do not establish a combined output for the engine and electric system, so the engine’s announced horsepower should not be treated as the ZEOD RC’s total power.
What did the ZEOD RC achieve at Le Mans?
Nissan reported that the car completed a full lap of the 13.6-kilometre (8.5-mile) Circuit de la Sarthe entirely on electric power during the warm-up session. The manufacturer also reported that it exceeded 300 km/h on the Mulsanne Straight during the meeting. These outcomes demonstrated the specific electric-lap objective and high-speed capability Nissan had set out to show; they do not establish race-long reliability or competitiveness.

The ACO interview with Ordóñez captures the purpose of the demonstration: the team was there to prove it could complete a full lap in electric mode. Nissan’s result provided that proof in warm-up, even though the car’s race itself was short-lived.
Did the Nissan ZEOD RC finish the 2014 Le Mans race?
No. Nissan’s retrospective says the car was eliminated early because of a gearbox issue. The reported outcome is clear, but the cited account does not establish a precise failure mechanism, lap count, or elapsed time.

- Polycarbonate bodywork.
- Electronic speed controller TBLE-02S.
- Sport 540 tuned electric motor.
- Robust TT 02D chassis (drift tuned).
- Speed controller for brushed and brushless motors.
That distinction matters when assessing the project. The ZEOD RC achieved its headline electric-lap demonstration, but it did not complete the 24-hour race. A successful warm-up lap and an early retirement are both part of its record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the ZEOD RC fully electric?
No. Nissan planned for electric propulsion on one lap per fuel stint, with the DIG-T R petrol engine providing power for the other running. “Zero Emission” in the car’s name referred to its on-demand electric mode, not an all-electric race strategy.
