Yes—the Nissan Xterra is returning, with Nissan targeting a U.S. launch in late 2028. The company describes a rugged, U.S.-produced SUV on a new body-on-frame platform, with V6 or V6-hybrid powertrain options. Nissan’s separate decision to cancel previously announced electric-vehicle programs at its Canton, Mississippi facility does not mean the Xterra was canceled or that it is replacing a specific canceled EV.
When is the new Nissan Xterra expected?
Nissan’s current U.S. future-vehicle page and its April 14, 2026 announcement both give late 2028 as the Xterra’s targeted launch timing. That is a company target, not a guaranteed showroom or on-sale date. Nissan has not announced an exact date or market-specific sales schedule. Nissan’s Xterra future-vehicle page and its April 14 announcement describe the plan.
What has Nissan confirmed about the Xterra?
Body-on-frame construction and U.S. production
Nissan describes the returning Xterra as a rugged SUV built on a new body-on-frame platform and says it will be produced in the United States. The company has framed the vehicle for its U.S. lineup, while its broader announcement refers to the U.S. and Canada; exact availability and timing in each market have not been stated.
V6 or V6-hybrid powertrain choices
Nissan says the Xterra will offer a V6 or V6 Hybrid. Those descriptions establish broad powertrain types, not production specifications: the company has not detailed engine displacement, hybrid-system design, output, fuel economy, drivetrain configurations, or which versions will be offered.

Part of a possible larger vehicle family
Nissan says it is exploring a family of five U.S.-built models on the new body-on-frame platform. The company has mentioned possible expansion into pickups and multi-row SUVs across Nissan and INFINITI, but those potential vehicles should not be treated as individually confirmed production models.
Did Nissan cancel the Xterra with its Canton EV plans?
No. Nissan’s Xterra announcement and its Canton EV decision are separate plans. On May 1, 2026, the Mississippi Clarion Ledger reported that Nissan would not proceed with previously announced EV programs at its Canton, Mississippi facility. WardsAuto reported that the canceled programs involved two planned electric SUVs for the U.S. market. The cited reporting does not establish the final names or detailed specifications of those EVs.
The earlier plan was different: in a March 26, 2025 announcement, Nissan said an all-new EV was scheduled to begin production at Canton from late FY27. The subsequent cancellation withdrew that earlier Canton EV plan; it did not identify the Xterra as a replacement.
Nissan spokesperson Jennifer Swanner told the Clarion Ledger: “To better align with market conditions, customer demand, and Nissan’s updated strategic direction, the company will not move forward with previously announced EV programs at its Canton, Mississippi facility.” That statement was reported by the newspaper, rather than published as a direct quote in a Nissan press release.

What remains unknown about the 2028 Xterra?
Nissan has not announced production-model pricing, trims, detailed technical specifications, ordering information, or exact on-sale dates by market. There is not yet enough published information to compare Xterra versions or assess equipment and capability.
- Engine and hybrid-system specifications, power and fuel economy
- Drivetrain choices, seating and cargo layout, and available off-road equipment
- Towing ratings, trim levels, pricing, and warranty details
- When orders will open and when vehicles will reach dealers
Until Nissan releases those details, the V6 and V6-hybrid descriptions are the limit of what can be said about the powertrains. The company’s plans may also change before launch.
