The safest way to evaluate an R35 GT-R is not to count internet anecdotes. Check the car’s model year, service records, transmission settings, noise location, fluids, tires, brakes, suspension, steering, leaks and VIN-specific campaigns. Nissan documents several inspections and one narrowly defined flywheel-housing rattle condition, but the available factory material does not establish a universal failure rate or ranking of “common” R35 problems.
What “common problems” means on an R35
R35 GT-Rs span multiple model years, markets and software, hardware and maintenance specifications. A symptom that is normal on one car can indicate damage on another, while a bulletin covering an early car may explicitly exclude later models. Treat every suspected problem as a diagnosis question: What year is the car, where exactly is the symptom, under what conditions does it occur, and what does the service history show?

Nissan’s owner manuals, maintenance schedules and technical bulletins support specific checks. They do not provide a verified percentage of cars that suffer transmission, differential, clutch, turbocharger or other failures. Mileage alone, a claimed number of launches, or an owner’s forum description cannot predict the condition of an individual GT-R.

Request dated documentation
Before a road test, ask for invoices and inspection reports that identify the vehicle by VIN. Look for transmission clutch and shift-fork inspections or adjustments, fluid changes, alignment work, brake repairs, leak repairs and parts replaced after track days or other performance driving. A stamped service book without supporting details is less useful than a dated invoice that states what was measured and adjusted.

Nissan says clutch and shift-fork inspection and adjustment should be performed by a GT-R-certified Nissan dealer at the recommended intervals. The manufacturer warns that incorrect or missed transmission settings can place excessive loads on powertrain components during starting and shifting. If the records omit these settings, budget for a specialist inspection rather than assuming the car is sound.
Establish how the car was driven
Ask whether the car has seen circuit use, repeated launches, drag events, high-temperature driving or long storage. Performance use is not automatic proof of a failed component, but it changes the inspection priority. Nissan’s performance-driving guidance adds checks for brake heat deterioration, pad and rotor condition, suspension mounting points, steering links, wheel and hub condition, tire pressure and tire damage, plus fluid and leak checks after elevated temperatures.
Identify the model year before diagnosing a rattle
The bounded flywheel-housing bulletin
Nissan bulletin AT09-010a / NTB09-147a, issued March 16, 2015, applies to 2009–2012 R35 GT-Rs. It explicitly does not apply to 2013 and later cars. The bulletin concerns a rattle that must be localized to the rear tail-shaft area of the flywheel housing. A generic metallic sound heard beneath the car is not enough to confirm this condition.

Some rattle is an operating characteristic of the drivetrain. Location, operating conditions and a qualified diagnosis separate normal mechanical noise from a repairable fault.

What an owner should do
- Note the exact model year and whether the noise occurs cold, warm, at idle, during takeoff, on overrun or during a gear change.
- Have a technician reproduce the sound safely and identify whether it comes from the rear tail-shaft area of the flywheel housing, the driveshaft center or the rear transmission.
- Give the technician the bulletin number and ask whether the vehicle falls within its 2009–2012 application.
- Do not attempt the bulletin’s repair procedure at home. Nissan’s procedure is technician-facing and involves engine removal; the manufacturer directs owners to a dealer when they believe the condition applies.
A rattle on a 2013-or-newer car cannot be diagnosed under that bulletin because Nissan excludes those model years. It still deserves inspection if it is new, worsening, accompanied by vibration, or associated with difficult engagement or warning lights.
Transmission, clutch and shift-fork checks
Why adjustment records matter
The R35’s dual-clutch transmission depends on measured clutch and shift-fork settings. Nissan’s transmission-settings guidance identifies inspection and adjustment as GT-R-certified dealer work. Incorrect settings can increase loads during starting and shifting, so a buyer should value documented measurements and adjustments rather than relying on a smooth short test drive.
Symptoms that justify specialist diagnosis
- Abnormal engagement, harsh or delayed shifts, repeated inability to select a gear, or a transmission warning.
- New knocking, grinding or vibration that changes with gear selection or driveline load.
- Fluid leaks around the transmission, transfer case or differential.
- A history of repeated clutch or transmission repairs without a clear measurement, adjustment and verification record.
Do not infer a universal transmission failure from one symptom, and do not use launch count or odometer mileage as a substitute for inspection. A GT-R-certified Nissan dealer or a specialist with the correct diagnostic equipment should retrieve fault information, inspect for leaks and verify the required settings.
Inspect tires, alignment, brakes, steering and suspension
Tires and alignment
The 2021 U.S. GT-R owner’s manual calls for checking tread wear, cracking and sidewall damage. Uneven wear can indicate incorrect alignment, worn suspension or incorrect pressures, but it can also result from track use. Record the brand, size, age and pressure of every tire and compare left and right wear patterns.

Nissan recommends a GT-R-certified dealer for alignment to the specified setting. A steering wheel that is off-center, a car that pulls, or rapid inner-edge wear warrants measurement on an alignment rack rather than a visual adjustment.
Brakes and wheel-end parts
Inspect pad thickness, rotor surfaces, cracks, heat spotting and uneven wear. Performance-driving guidance adds brake heat deterioration and inspection of wheel and hub condition. A pedal that changes after repeated stops, vibration under braking or a brake warning should end a road test until the system is checked.
Steering and suspension
Check steering and suspension links for looseness or damage, including rods, arms, mounting points and connections. Look for leaking dampers, damaged bushings, bent components and evidence of contact with curbs or track debris. Nissan’s 2024 U.S. axle-and-suspension schedule lists inspection every 48,000 miles or 48 months under standard conditions, and every 6,000 miles or 6 months under severe conditions. Those intervals belong to the 2024 schedule; confirm the correct schedule for the car’s model year and market.

Brake fluid on the 2021 U.S. car
The 2021 U.S. owner’s manual specifies Genuine Nissan Brake Fluid R35 Special II or an equivalent and gives a 3,000-mile (5,000-km) change interval. Nissan says the GT-R’s VDC unit and related parts were designed for this fluid and that it cannot ensure best performance and proper operation with a non-equivalent product. This is a model-year- and market-specific instruction, not a blanket recommendation for every R35.

Fluids after performance driving
Nissan’s 2016 performance-driving guide calls for checking engine, transmission and differential oil levels and leaks, checking coolant leaks, inspecting driveshaft universal-joint boots, and checking clutch clearance and shift-fork position. It also calls for brake, tire, steering, suspension and alignment checks after demanding use and gives additional fluid attention after elevated-temperature exposure.
These instructions identify maintenance actions; they do not prove that the listed components commonly fail. A damp boot, active leak, low fluid level or overheated brake should be corrected before further hard driving.
Recommended Free Tools
Look for leaks and damaged driveshaft boots
Use a lift or inspection bay to examine the engine, transmission, transfer case, differential and coolant system for fresh or accumulated leakage. Distinguish an old, cleaned stain from an active leak, and check fluid levels before the vehicle is driven aggressively. Inspect both driveshaft universal-joint boots for splits, grease loss or loose clamps. A torn boot can allow contamination into a joint even when the car has not yet developed a noise.

When a seller presents a recently washed underside, ask for a follow-up inspection after a road test. Fresh fluid at a seal, joint or casing deserves a written diagnosis before purchase.
Check recalls by VIN, production range and market
Recall coverage is not a model-wide label. It depends on the VIN, production range and country. A Nissan Japan entry cited for an R35 seat-belt issue covers 238 vehicles produced from May 24 through August 29, 2022, and lists 13 service replacement parts. That entry is not evidence that every R35, or cars sold in another market, is affected.
- Copy the VIN directly from the vehicle and registration documents.
- Use the official Nissan or regulator recall lookup for the country in which the car is registered.
- Ask the seller for proof that an applicable campaign was completed, not merely a statement that the car has no recalls.
- Have open campaigns addressed through the authorized channel before relying on the vehicle for high-speed or track use.

How to compare two R35s
When two cars have similar prices or mileage, compare evidence rather than odometers. Give greater weight to:
- Model year and the manual or schedule that applies to it.
- Complete transmission clutch and shift-fork inspection and adjustment records.
- Documented fluid, brake and alignment service.
- Clear disclosure of track, launch, high-temperature or long-storage use.
- Repairs diagnosed and verified by a GT-R-qualified technician.
- Even tire wear, healthy brakes, sound suspension and steering, and no active leaks.
- A symptom that has been localized and verified instead of a generic noise described as a known problem.
A higher-mileage car with complete specialist records can be a more defensible purchase than a lower-mileage example with missing settings, unknown fluid history and unexplained noises.
When to stop driving and arrange a diagnosis
Park the car and arrange qualified inspection if a warning light appears, a gear will not engage, the transmission slips or bangs repeatedly, a fluid leak is active, braking performance changes, steering or suspension has looseness, a tire has structural damage, or a new driveline vibration grows with speed. Do not attempt hard driving to “see if it clears.” Provide the technician with the conditions that reproduce the symptom and the last known service date.
