Know exactly which Be-1 you have
Nissan identifies the car as the 1987 Be-1, with the factory code BK10. Both roof versions use the 987cc MA10 four-cylinder overhead-cam engine and a floor-shift three-speed automatic transmission, but their dimensions and weights differ slightly. Recording the configuration prevents a common error: ordering a part that fits a related K10/March application but not the Be-1 as built.

These figures come from Nissan’s Heritage information for the Be-1. Treat the standard-roof and canvas-top entries as separate fitment records when dealing with glass, weather seals, roof hardware, interior trim and any body component.
Why parts can be difficult to find
The Be-1 was shown as a reference vehicle at the 26th Tokyo Motor Show in 1985 and launched in January 1987. Nissan limited production to 10,000 cars; more than 10,000 orders were received and buyers were selected by lottery. That unusually small run, combined with 1980s vehicle age, explains why genuine Be-1 parts may be discontinued, absent from regional catalogs or available only through specialist, used, remanufactured or reproduction channels. It does not mean every mechanical part is unique, but it does mean that a familiar-looking part should never be treated as confirmed fitment without documentation.

Nissan describes the Be-1 as the car that started its later Pike Car series, alongside models such as the PAO and FIGARO. That family resemblance can help locate knowledgeable specialists, yet it is not proof that a part interchanges. The Be-1’s BK10 identity, MA10 engine installation, three-speed automatic and body configuration remain the controlling details.
Use the BK10 service manual as your reference point
A manual cataloged as NISSAN Be-1 BK10型車整備要領書 (A015004) is documented as a Be-1 maintenance and service manual. A related Nissan Be-1 BK10 service bulletin/introduction document is also cataloged. Search for the identifiers BK10, MA10 and A015004 together when checking Japanese libraries, auction listings, owner clubs, marque specialists or manual reproducers.
The catalog record confirms that the document exists; it does not establish that any particular scan or reproduction is complete, factory-authorized or currently in stock. Before buying, ask for the edition, language, page count, binding or file format, image quality and whether wiring diagrams, adjustment data and maintenance schedules are included. A reproduction that omits fold-out diagrams can be inadequate for electrical or drivetrain work.

- BK10-specific component names and exploded diagrams.
- MA10 engine, three-speed automatic, suspension and brake procedures.
- Adjustment specifications, tightening information and inspection limits where Nissan published them.
- Wiring and connector information for diagnosing the car’s electrical systems.
- Routine-maintenance schedules and fluid or clearance specifications.
Do not substitute a generic K10 or March workshop book for BK10 documentation when a procedure depends on body configuration, transmission details, wiring or a Be-1-only trim component.
A reliable parts-finding workflow
- Record the car. Write down BK10, MA10, automatic transmission, roof type, market or import history, tire size and any identification-plate information. Photograph the installed part from several angles.
- Define the component precisely. “Front brake part” is too broad. Note whether you need a pad, disc, caliper seal, hose, wheel cylinder, drum or hardware kit, and record dimensions from the old part when safe to do so.
- Start with A015004. Find the manual’s diagram, procedure name, specification and—if available—Nissan part number before contacting suppliers.
- Cross-check the physical sample. Verify outside diameter, thickness, length, thread pitch, connector shape, mounting-hole spacing, spline or tooth count and electrical rating. A visually similar component is not confirmed until those checks agree.
- Search by multiple identifiers. Use “Nissan Be-1 BK10,” “MA10,” the A015004 manual terminology and the original part number. Japanese-language listings may use Be-1’s model code rather than an English description.
- Ask for evidence before payment. Request photographs of labels, casting marks, dimensions and the donor vehicle. For trim, glass, seals and canvas-top hardware, confirm the side, roof version and color or material.

Can March, K10 or other MA10 parts be used?
Some service items may share dimensions or technology with other Nissan applications, but the available information does not establish a universal interchange list. The MA10 engine designation alone is insufficient: mounting arrangements, sensors, brackets, pulleys, carburetion or injection equipment, wiring, emissions hardware and transmission interfaces can vary by market and year.

- The BK10 manual or a Nissan part-number record gives the same number.
- A supplier documents the part for BK10 specifically, not merely for an MA10-powered vehicle.
- Measured dimensions, thread forms, connectors and ratings match the removed component.
- A qualified specialist verifies the application against factory diagrams.
When to stop and investigate
- The seller relies only on a photograph or the phrase “looks the same.”
- The part changes a safety system, steering, braking, fuel delivery or engine timing.
- The donor vehicle’s market, year or transmission differs and no specification is supplied.
- The listing cannot provide a part number, dimensions or return terms.
Never force a near-match into service. An inexpensive incorrect part can damage surrounding components or leave a safety system unreliable.
Maintenance priorities for an almost 40-year-old Be-1
The exact factory intervals for oil, belts, fluids, valve clearance and inspections are not established in the available Nissan material. Take those values from A015004 or from a qualified specialist who has the correct BK10 documentation; do not copy an interval from a modern Nissan or an unrelated March.

Until the documented schedule is in hand, organize work by system and condition rather than inventing mileage numbers:
Fluids and lubrication
- Identify every fluid by the manual’s specification before draining or topping up.
- Check for leaks around the engine, automatic transmission, cooling system and brake hydraulics.
- Record the date, odometer reading and product specification for each service.
Engine and ignition
- Inspect belts, hoses, clamps, seals and electrical connections for age-related deterioration.
- Confirm spark-plug type, ignition components and adjustment values from the MA10 section of the manual.
- Investigate hard starting, overheating, misfire or oil-pressure warnings before normal driving.
Brakes and tires
- The standard-roof specification uses disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear; inspect both systems independently.

Confirm whether a panel, lamp, grille, molding, seat covering, weatherstrip or canvas component belongs to the standard-roof or canvas-top car. Ask for photographs showing mounting tabs and the reverse side, because two visually similar pieces can use different clips or brackets.

Prepare a parts-and-service file
Create one folder—paper or digital—with the vehicle identification, roof type, engine and transmission details, the A015004 manual, scans of diagrams, photographs, measurements, invoices and completed-service notes. Label removed parts before disassembly and record connector locations. This file turns future searches into targeted BK10/MA10 requests and helps a specialist confirm what is original, modified or missing.
When selling or transferring the car, pass the file on. For a low-production vehicle, documentation can be as valuable as a spare component because it preserves fitment evidence that may not be available in a current catalog.
What owners should expect
The Be-1 is maintainable, but ownership rewards verification. Use BK10 and MA10 in every search, secure the A015004 service manual, and separate generic consumables from model-specific trim.
