What the evidence can—and cannot—identify as the best year
The Nissan 370Z sold in the researched US overview from model years 2009 through 2020. Nissan identifies 2020 as the final production year for the coupe. That makes 2020 the newest and last model year, but “newest” is not the same as “most reliable,” and the available sources do not prove that any one year is the best value.
Two independent data sets point in different directions. CarComplaints places 2010 at the bottom of its 370Z ranking and displays more reported complaints for that year. RepairPal instead reports a model-level average of 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year, using a measure that combines repair cost, frequency and severity. RepairPal does not provide a complete, directly comparable reliability ranking for every 370Z year.

Those differences matter. A complaint count is influenced by how many cars remain on the road, vehicle age, owner reporting habits, problem visibility and the number of vehicles sold. It is not the percentage of cars that failed. RepairPal’s figure describes the model in aggregate and is not a forecast for a particular used car. The sources therefore support a buying method, not a universal winner.
What “best” should mean for your purchase
- Reliability: a car with complete maintenance records, no unresolved warning lights, no evidence of neglected wear and a favorable independent inspection.
- Price: an asking price that reflects mileage, condition, trim, location, history and modifications—not merely the badge or model year.
- Risk: verified campaign completion, a clear title and history, and evidence that previous owners did not subject the car to avoidable abuse.
- Fit: the body style, transmission and equipment you want, because paying for a newer year does not fix a configuration you dislike.
Reliability by model year: how to read the available signals
2010: a reason to inspect closely, not an automatic “do not buy”
CarComplaints identifies 2010 as its worst 370Z model year under its ranking methodology, which considers factors including repair cost and the average mileage when problems are reported. Its page also shows the highest overall complaint total for that year in its comparison. That is useful as a screening prompt: when looking at a 2010 car, demand stronger records and a more thorough inspection.
It is not proof that every 2010 370Z is unreliable. Raw complaints are not normalized by the number of vehicles sold or miles driven, and they do not tell you whether a specific vehicle’s reported issue was repaired correctly. A well-documented 2010 with excellent condition can be a lower-risk purchase than a neglected car from a later year.
2009 and 2011: early cars require VIN-specific safety checks
A Nissan service communication hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes a free front-passenger airbag-inflator replacement activity for specific 2009–2011 370Z vehicles. Model-year inclusion alone does not establish that every car is eligible, nor that an eligible car has been repaired.
For any 2009, 2010 or 2011 candidate, obtain the VIN, check current campaign status with Nissan or NHTSA, and ask for documentation showing that the repair was completed. Treat an unresolved campaign as a safety and transaction issue to be corrected before purchase, not as a reason to guess about the rest of the car.

The available sources do not establish that a particular middle-year 370Z is categorically more dependable than the others. Nissan identifies 2020 as the final production year for the coupe. A 2020 car may appeal because it is newer and has had fewer years to accumulate age-related wear, but those advantages can be offset by a higher asking price, low-mileage premiums, accident history or poor storage. The evidence does not show a year-specific reliability advantage large enough to justify buying an unsuitable 2020 over a better-maintained earlier car.

CarMax’s 2025 overview, checked on October 13, 2026, displays used 2009–2020 370Z prices from $18,998 to $46,998. This is a broad retailer research-page range for the model span. It is not a transaction database, a year-by-year table, a condition-adjusted appraisal or a guaranteed October 2026 market quote.
The range is wide because two cars with the same model year can differ substantially in mileage, body and interior condition, title history, trim, equipment, modifications, location and listing timing. A low number can represent a high-mileage or heavily modified car; a high number can reflect a newer, unusually clean or scarce configuration. Without those details, comparing prices by year alone can lead you to pay more for age while overlooking condition.
Use a price comparison that adjusts for the car in front of you

- Build a maintenance timeline. Look for regular oil and filter service, fluid changes, brake and tire replacement, and repairs that match the mileage. Missing records do not prove neglect, but they increase uncertainty and should affect the price you are willing to pay.
- Inspect modifications. Identify suspension, exhaust, intake, engine-management, wheel and cosmetic changes. Ask for original parts and installation documentation. Pay particular attention to wiring, warning lights, uneven tire wear and parts that prevent normal servicing.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Use a technician who is not financially tied to the seller. Request a scan for stored and pending diagnostic codes, a lift inspection, fluid and leak checks, brake and tire measurements, cooling-system inspection and a road test from cold start through operating temperature.
- Price the repairs, not just the purchase. Obtain written estimates for defects found during inspection. Subtract unavoidable near-term work from the amount you can spend, and leave a reserve for issues that a visual inspection cannot predict.
- Compare the adjusted totals. A higher-priced car with complete records and little immediate work may cost less than a cheaper car requiring tires, brakes, fluids, body repair and undocumented modification correction.
- Negotiate with evidence. Present inspection findings, campaign status and documented maintenance gaps. Do not use the 2010 complaint ranking—or the fact that a car is a 2020—as a substitute for evidence about that individual vehicle.
Inspection checklist for reliability risk
Before the appointment
- Ask for the VIN, title status, service invoices and the reason for sale.
- Confirm the advertised mileage against the title, inspection records and service documents.
- Request photos of the engine bay, underbody, tires and interior before traveling.
- Check whether the seller permits an independent inspection and a cold-start visit.
At the car
- Inspect panel gaps, paint texture, glass markings and underbody damage for evidence of collision or poor repairs.
- Check tire brand, size, age and tread consistency; mismatched or unevenly worn tires can reveal alignment, suspension or use problems.
- Look for fluid leaks, damaged connectors, corroded terminals, missing fasteners and non-factory wiring.
- Verify that warning lamps illuminate during the key-on check and go out after the engine starts. A dark warning lamp can be as concerning as an illuminated one.
- Test every switch, display, climate-control function, window, lock, light and safety-system indicator.
- During the road test, note starting behavior, idle quality, clutch or automatic-transmission operation, steering feel, braking, vibration, noise and temperature stability.
- Have the technician scan for current, pending and history codes after the road test; clearing codes shortly before a sale can hide readiness or intermittent faults.
After the inspection
Separate findings into three groups: safety-critical defects, work needed soon and cosmetic or preference items. Ask the technician which findings indicate a failed repair, poor modification or ordinary wear. Keep the written report and estimates with the purchase paperwork so the negotiated price reflects documented facts.

How to verify the 2009–2011 airbag campaign

- Ask the seller for a repair order showing the inflator replacement, date and vehicle identification.
- If the status is open, confirm with an authorized repair facility that the replacement is available and free under the campaign terms.
- Do not treat an advertised “airbag recall completed” statement as proof until the VIN and documentation agree.
An open campaign should be resolved before regular use. If the seller will not provide a VIN or permit verification, consider that refusal a transaction risk independent of the car’s model year.
Oil and routine maintenance: use the exact manual
Nissan’s 2020 owner’s manual recommends Nissan Motor Oil Ester 5W-30 SN or an equivalent motor oil. That recommendation is tied to the 2020 manual and market; it should not be copied automatically to every 370Z. Confirm the exact model year’s owner’s manual and the specification required in your market before buying oil.
For a used-car evaluation, the important evidence is not a brand name on a bottle but a credible maintenance record: correct specification, reasonable intervals, documented filter changes and invoices that identify the vehicle. If records are incomplete, budget for a baseline service after purchase and have the technician inspect for leaks or contamination before selecting fluids.
What the reliability number really tells you
RepairPal’s reported 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year is a model-level average from its current page snapshot, checked October 13, 2026. Its methodology considers unscheduled repair cost, frequency and severity. It can provide broad context that the model is not being described solely by an anecdotal complaint list, but it cannot predict the repair needs of a particular 2009, 2015 or 2020 car.

Use the figure appropriately: as one background signal, not as a warranty, annual repair budget or reason to skip an inspection. A 370Z with deferred maintenance can need substantial work even if the model-level average looks favorable, while a carefully serviced high-mileage example may continue operating reliably.

Buying modifications without understanding their history
Aftermarket parts are not automatically bad, but undocumented work can conceal hard use, wiring faults, poor tuning or unavailable replacement parts. Price the risk or choose the better-documented car.
A concise decision rule
Choose the 370Z that scores best on documented maintenance, independent inspection, campaign completion, title and history, condition, configuration and adjusted purchase cost. Use model year only as a tie-breaker after those checks. If two cars remain genuinely equal, the newer 2020 may offer the appeal of being the final coupe year, while a substantially cheaper earlier car can make more financial sense when its records and condition are strong.
