NIO has brought a 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery into production and delivery, but the available evidence does not establish that it was unequivocally the first EV maker to bring this technology to the mass market. NIO identifies 360 Wh/kg as the battery cells’ energy density; its supplier, WeLion, says the battery was mass-produced and delivered to NIO by the end of 2023. Those facts do not establish how many vehicles received it or a verified driving range.
What is NIO’s 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery?
It is an optional, high-capacity battery pack for NIO vehicles, described in the company’s 2023 Form 20-F as an ultra-long-range battery using next-generation technology. NIO’s technology page associates the pack with cells rated at 360 Wh/kg.
That 360 Wh/kg figure is cell-level energy density, not the energy density of the complete battery pack. Cell and pack figures are not interchangeable: a pack includes components beyond the cells, so the cell specification alone does not describe the mass or energy density of the assembled pack.
Who makes NIO’s semi-solid-state battery?
WeLion New Energy Technology is the supplier associated with the 150 kWh battery. On its company page, WeLion describes a 360 Wh/kg high-energy-density battery and says it was mass-produced and delivered to NIO by the end of 2023. This is WeLion’s company statement, not an independently verified production-volume report.

NIO’s 2023 Form 20-F described delivery of the battery as expected “in the near future.” That filing recorded NIO’s expectation at the time; WeLion’s current company description gives the later, retrospective delivery claim.
How far can a NIO go with the 150 kWh battery?
The sources cited here do not establish a verified vehicle-range result for this pack. WeLion says its battery has a “single range of over 1000km,” but that is the supplier’s own claim; the page does not provide an independently measured vehicle result or the test cycle and conditions needed to compare range reliably. Do not treat the 360 Wh/kg cell figure or the 150 kWh capacity as a specific driving-distance guarantee.

Which NIO models can use the 150 kWh battery?
NIO presents the pack as a flexible upgrade rather than publishing a definitive, enduring model-by-model compatibility list in the cited material. Its ES6 page directs customers to consult the production vehicle and the NIO app configurator for current configurations. Availability can therefore depend on the vehicle configuration and market; check NIO’s current local configurator before assuming a particular model can use the pack.
How does the battery fit into NIO’s services?
NIO’s battery proposition is linked to its vehicle and service ecosystem, including battery swapping, Battery as a Service (BaaS), and flexible battery upgrades. The company listed these services in its April 2024 Auto China announcement. The 150 kWh battery is an OEM vehicle pack offered through NIO’s configuration channels, not a generally available aftermarket replacement.

NIO’s partnership with CATL is a separate matter. On March 14, 2024, NIO announced a framework agreement with CATL for long-life battery research based on NIO’s power-swapping needs. That announcement does not identify CATL as the supplier of the 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery. See NIO’s announcement of the agreement.

The evidence supports a narrower statement: WeLion says its 360 Wh/kg battery was mass-produced and delivered to NIO by the end of 2023, and NIO identifies a 150 kWh pack using 360 Wh/kg cells. It does not establish an industry-wide first under every definition of “semi-solid-state” or “mass market,” nor does it provide a production count, installed-pack total, or sales-volume figure. The strongest defensible description is that NIO received a supplier-reported mass-produced semi-solid-state battery—not that an unequivocal global first has been independently established.
