The teenager charged over the North Lake crash that killed 18-year-old footballer Nick Campo pleaded guilty to manslaughter and five other charges on 4 March 2025. On 4 June 2025, he was sentenced to more than three years in jail. He was 17 at the time of the crash; reports did not name him because of legal restrictions.
What happened to Nick Campo?
Campo, who played for South Fremantle Football Club’s colts side, died after a crash on Farrington Road in North Lake on 13 July 2024. Five other people were injured. ABC News reported that Campo was 18 and that a Toyota HiLux was involved in the crash. ABC News’ report from 13 July 2024 covered the incident.
Did the teenage driver plead guilty?
Yes. On 4 March 2025, ABC News reported that the driver had pleaded guilty to manslaughter and five other charges, described in reporting as dangerous-driving offences. The plea resolved the uncertainty in earlier coverage: on 20 February, PerthNow had reported that the accused was expected to enter pleas at his next court appearance and was likely to plead guilty. ABC News’ plea report and PerthNow’s 20 February report document the change from expectation to confirmed plea.
After the pleas, Campo’s sister Eva said: “No amount of sentencing or jail time will ever make what happened to Nick OK.” Defence lawyer Michael Tudori said there were “No winners in this situation” and that the driver was conscious his actions had affected his friends. ABC News reported both comments in its coverage of the pleas.

What did the court hear about the crash?
In its 7 April 2025 report on the court hearing, ABC News described prosecution allegations concerning the vehicle’s speed, cocaine use and the ute’s condition. The report also noted that the defence disputed some details. Those accounts should be understood as material reported from the hearing, not as uncontested findings in every respect. The available reporting does not include a court transcript or written sentencing reasons.
ABC News’ 7 April report recounts the court’s account and the disputes described in the proceedings.

What sentence did the driver receive?
On 4 June 2025, Judge Hylton Quail sentenced the driver to more than three years in jail, according to ABC News. The report said Judge Quail described the driver’s remorse as genuine, saying, “Your remorse is genuine.” The judge also spoke of the “moral responsibility” of all the boys who got into the vehicle and encouraged the driver to “break the rules.” Those are the judge’s reported characterizations; they do not reduce the driver’s criminal responsibility established by the guilty pleas.
Judge Quail also said cocaine had a “disinhibiting and stimulating effect” on those in the car and that “What followed was all but inevitable,” as reported by ABC News. ABC News’ sentencing report covers the sentence and the judge’s comments.
