A July 2025 report put the estimated population at 1,187,232 vehicles, but an investigation is not a new recall—and the investigation’s status as of October 8, 2026, is not established here. Check your truck’s VIN and repair history rather than relying on model year alone.
What the reported investigation covers
CarComplaints reported on July 8, 2025, that NHTSA was examining an estimated 1,187,232 trucks associated with the 2017 and 2018 recalls 17V-821 and 18V-100. The reported scope was 2013–2018 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks with column-mounted shifters. These are reported investigation details, not confirmation that every truck in those model years is affected. CarComplaints’ July 2025 report described 14 complaints and six reported injuries associated with trucks said to have been repaired under the earlier recalls. Those counts are not independently verified here as final findings or a current tally.
NHTSA was reported to be reviewing whether the remedies for recalls 17V-821 and 18V-100 were effective. Secondary summaries of the earlier campaigns describe interlock pins sticking open and remedies that included inspection or replacement of affected components and a body-control-module software update. How the alleged BTSI failure could create a rollaway risk
The brake transmission shift interlock is intended to prevent shifting out of Park unless the brake pedal is pressed. In the problem described in the investigation coverage, a failure could let the shifter move out of Park without pressing the brake and, according to that coverage, without the key in the ignition. If the truck is not securely held in Park and its parking brake is not applied, it could roll away. Investigation does not mean a new recall
An investigation is a review of reports and possible safety issues; it does not, by itself, establish a defect or require a new recall. The 2025 report says NHTSA was examining the effectiveness of the two earlier campaigns. The current status of that review—and whether NHTSA or Stellantis has since taken further action—is unverified as of October 8, 2026. Do not assume that another recall has been issued unless NHTSA or the manufacturer confirms it.
How to check your Ram’s VIN and prior repair
- Open NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup and enter your truck’s vehicle identification number. A model-year or model-name match alone cannot establish whether your specific vehicle is covered.
- Review any listed recall and repair information. If you have questions about a previous repair or what the record means, contact a Ram dealer or FCA US/Stellantis and ask them to check the campaign and repair history for your VIN. - If a safety recall applies and its repair is outstanding, arrange service through the manufacturer or an authorized dealer and confirm what repair is appropriate for your vehicle.
NHTSA’s general guidance says: “If a safety-related defect exists in a motor vehicle or a piece of motor vehicle equipment, the manufacturer must fix it for FREE.” That guidance does not mean NHTSA has found a new recall covering every truck discussed in the investigation.
