NHTSA’s DTN60DB Airbag Investigation: What Used-Car Owners Should Know

NHTSA’s current consumer guidance reports 14 crashes involving replacement driver airbag inflators marked DTN60DB, with 11 deaths and three severe injuries. If your vehicle has had an airbag deploy in a crash, NHTSA recommends having it inspected by a reputable mechanic. The agency’s defect finding covers inflators bearing the DTN60DB identifier whether they were made by the named manufacturer or are counterfeit; the manufacturer disputes supplying them for U.S. vehicle installation.

What NHTSA has found about DTN60DB inflators

The inflators at issue are replacement frontal driver-airbag inflators marked DTN60DB and labeled DTN. NHTSA says the inflator can rupture during a crash and propel metal fragments into the vehicle’s occupants, causing death or serious injury. The agency describes the crashes it has reviewed as otherwise survivable.

NHTSA’s current consumer page lists 14 crashes, 11 deaths and three severe injuries involving DTN60DB-marked inflators. Those are the agency’s current reported totals, not an estimate of how many suspect inflators are installed nationwide.

The manufacturer, Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd., told NHTSA it had not sold inflators to the United States for vehicle installation and argued the units may be counterfeit versions. NHTSA’s safety-defect finding applies to inflators marked DTN60DB regardless of whether DTN or a counterfeiter made them. The origin of the individual units is disputed; the identifier is the basis for the agency’s finding.

How the reported totals changed

Date and stage NHTSA-reported incidents What the figure represents
October 21, 2025: investigation opened 8 crashes; 6 deaths and 2 severe injuries The known cases when NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened Engineering Analysis EA25005. NHTSA said all eight then-known inflators were replacements installed after a prior crash and potentially imported illegally.
April 2, 2026: initial decision 12 confirmed ruptures; 10 deaths and 2 severe injuries The figures in NHTSA’s initial decision. The agency said the statutory process required public comment and an opportunity for DTN to present information challenging the decision.
Current consumer guidance, following the September 3, 2026 alert 14 crashes; 11 deaths and 3 severe injuries The totals on NHTSA’s current consumer page. Its September 3 alert reported the 11th death, in a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, following a crash on August 27, 2026.

The counts refer to different dates and stages of the investigation; the April figures are not the latest total. NHTSA’s decision record says the agency could not confidently estimate the number of suspect inflators in the United States, in part because they were likely illegally imported.

Which vehicles and repair histories are implicated?

NHTSA’s reported ruptures have involved Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata and Chevrolet Equinox vehicles. That list does not establish that the risk is limited to those models. The affected parts are replacement inflators, not necessarily the factory-installed airbag equipment originally supplied with a vehicle.

In the 12 incidents counted in the April 2026 initial decision, at least 10 inflators had been installed as replacements after earlier crashes. NHTSA said it did not know why the inflators were installed in the other two incidents. Its broader consumer advice is aimed at used vehicles with a previous airbag deployment, not just the models named in reported crashes.

What owners should do

  1. Arrange a professional inspection if an airbag deployed. NHTSA advises owners of vehicles previously involved in a crash where airbags deployed to have the vehicle inspected by a reputable mechanic. Its September 3, 2026 alert specifically urged owners of used vehicles with deployments since 2020 to seek an inspection.
  2. Tell the mechanic about the deployment and any airbag replacement. Share what you know about the crash, repair work and replacement parts. The inspection is the practical next step supported by NHTSA; the agency does not identify a consumer lookup that confirms whether a vehicle has a DTN60DB inflator.
  3. Do not treat the model list as an all-clear. A vehicle outside the three models named in reported incidents is not established as risk-free if it has a prior airbag deployment.

Do not try to identify the inflator by buying a part online, removing the airbag or relying on an ordinary consumer scan tool. NHTSA’s guidance supports professional inspection, not those methods.

How this differs from Takata airbag recalls

The DTN60DB investigation concerns a specific identifier on replacement driver-airbag inflators. NHTSA says genuine replacement Takata airbags are not affected by this DTN issue. The two matters should not be conflated: a Takata recall notice and the DTN60DB defect finding address different parts and circumstances.
