NHTSA closed its investigation into whether a previous Honda Ridgeline backup-camera wiring repair would hold up over time. The agency found that its owner survey, vehicle inspections, and durability testing did not support further action—but stressed that closing the case is not a finding that no safety defect exists.
What NHTSA investigated
The case was about the durability of a repair for a specific rearview-camera problem on 2017–2019 Honda Ridgelines, not a general investigation of every Honda backup camera. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened Recall Query RQ24011 on June 26, 2024, to assess the long-term suitability of Honda’s remedy for recall 22V-867. After receiving reports of harness failures in vehicles repaired under that recall, NHTSA opened Engineering Analysis EA25003 on February 11, 2025. The inquiry covered a population of 129,092 vehicles, according to the NHTSA investigation record.
The earlier recall involved a loss of the rearview-camera image after damage to wiring in the tailgate harness. The investigation record says the harness’s corrugated protective tubing did not adequately protect it from bending wear, and zip ties could be too loose to keep the tubing in place. Repeatedly opening and closing the tailgate could fatigue and break the wiring, disconnecting the camera.
Honda’s recall remedy used a replacement harness with longer protective corrugated tubing and sufficiently tightened zip ties. EA25003 examined whether that remedy would remain durable—not whether every camera failure on a Ridgeline had the same cause.

Why reports of repaired-harness failures did not settle the question
NHTSA’s record noted 14 reports of harness failures in vehicles that had received the 22V-867 remedy. That is a count of reports, not 14 confirmed examples of the specific durability failure under investigation. ODI determined that most reports involved different failure modes and could not be attributed to the durability concern it was testing.
The distinction matters: a camera or harness problem can be reported without showing that the replacement harness failed because of the bending-wear mechanism at issue in EA25003.

What NHTSA found and what the closure means
NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center surveyed owners, inspected selected vehicles, and conducted durability testing intended to reproduce the failure mode. The survey responses and inspections did not show camera failures caused by harness damage. The durability-test results indicated that the part was not expected to fail within a reasonable vehicle lifespan. Based on its analysis of field and test data, NHTSA closed EA25003 without further action on September 18, 2026. The agency’s investigation record gives the findings and closure details; Reuters reported the closure on September 22, 2026.
The closure is limited. NHTSA explicitly said: “The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist.” The agency also reserved the right to take further action if future circumstances warrant. The outcome does not certify every repaired vehicle as problem-free, and it does not determine whether an individual owner’s recall repair was completed.

How the investigation differs from recall 22V-867
Recall 22V-867 was the original safety recall and repair campaign; EA25003 was a later review of the durability of that repair. Closing EA25003 did not cancel the recall or remove any unrepaired recall from a vehicle’s record.
Honda’s 2024 first-quarter recall report listed 117,445 vehicles for recall 22V-867 and 53,383 remedied as of its submission dated April 26, 2024. Those are historical figures, not current completion totals. The later investigation record’s population of 129,092 vehicles describes the 2017–2019 inquiry; it is not a count of vehicles with confirmed failures.

What Ridgeline owners should do
Check your vehicle’s recall status
Enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) in NHTSA’s recall lookup to check for unrepaired safety recalls. NHTSA cautions that VINs for recently announced recalls may not all be identified immediately. A recall that has already been repaired will not appear as unrepaired in the lookup.

If the camera image is missing or intermittent
- Contact an authorized Honda dealer and ask the service department to check your vehicle’s VIN, recall history, and the cause of the camera problem.
- If you believe the problem is safety-related, report it to NHTSA through its recall and safety-issue resources.
- Do not assume that EA25003’s closure means a covered recall repair is no longer available. Ask the dealer whether an applicable recall remedy remains outstanding before paying for work that may be covered by a free recall repair.
