Harley-Davidson has given investors reasons to watch for a turnaround, but its results have not yet proved one. The company raised parts of its 2026 outlook in July and reported share repurchases, while its core motorcycle business posted a loss in 2025. Those facts support a cautiously improving outlook—not a conclusion that HOG shares have outperformed or that the market broadly backs the plan.
What Harley-Davidson’s 2025 results say about the business
The full-year 2025 results show why a recovery remains unproven. Harley-Davidson, Inc. reported revenue of $4.473 billion, down 14% from 2024; operating income of $387 million, down 7%; net income of $339 million, down 26%; and diluted earnings per share of $2.78, down 19%. Harley-Davidson’s February 10, 2026 results release reported these figures.
The motorcycle business weakened
Harley-Davidson Motor Company (HDMC), the core motorcycle operation, saw shipments fall 16% and revenue decline 13% in 2025. It recorded a $29 million operating loss, compared with $278 million in operating income in 2024. Harley-Davidson also reported that global retail motorcycle sales fell 12% to 132,500 units.
Shipments and retail sales measure different parts of the business. Shipments are motorcycles sold into the distribution channel; retail sales are new motorcycles sold to customers, as reported by Harley-Davidson. A gap between their movements can matter because wholesale activity and customer demand do not necessarily move in tandem.

How much of Harley-Davidson’s profit came from its finance business?
Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS) reported $490 million in operating income for 2025, up from $248 million in 2024, even as its revenue fell 16%. The company attributed the operating-income result in part to the HDFS transaction. That makes the increase an important qualification when assessing whether the company’s underlying operating performance improved: the finance segment’s reported gain does not erase HDMC’s loss.
LiveWire remains a separate risk
LiveWire, Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle business, reported a $75 million operating loss in 2025. That was 32% narrower year over year, while shipments rose to 653 electric motorcycles from 612 in 2024. The smaller loss and higher shipments are signs of movement, but the business remained loss-making and management’s 2026 forecast still anticipates a substantial operating loss.

Why did Harley-Davidson raise its 2026 guidance?
On July 23, 2026, Harley-Davidson raised some full-year guidance ranges. The change indicates management expected better results than it previously forecast in those areas; it is not evidence that the targets have already been reached. The company maintained its LiveWire operating-loss range. The second-quarter results release gives the revised ranges.
| 2026 measure | Guidance reported July 23, 2026 |
|---|---|
| HDMC retail sales | 133,500–138,500 motorcycles |
| HDMC shipments | 133,500–138,500 motorcycles |
| HDMC operating income | $10 million–$50 million |
| HDFS operating income | $55 million–$70 million |
| LiveWire operating loss | $70 million–$80 million; range maintained |
These are management’s full-year guidance ranges, not reported full-year results. Their significance depends on whether Harley-Davidson delivers them as the year progresses.

What do buybacks and cash tell investors?
Harley-Davidson reported $158 million of discretionary share repurchases, representing 7.9 million shares, and $1.9 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2026. The July 23 release reports those figures. Buybacks show a capital-allocation decision, and cash provides balance-sheet context; neither, by itself, demonstrates that motorcycle demand or operating earnings have recovered.
What could derail the turnaround?
Harley-Davidson has identified risks that could affect its outlook, including tariffs, changes in consumer demand, margins, dealer capabilities, LiveWire adoption and funding, and execution of its Back to the Bricks plan. The company’s second-quarter release describes these risks.

Those risks connect directly to the measures investors can use to judge progress:
- Core demand: watch retail sales alongside shipments, dealer inventory and regional results. Sales to riders and sales into the distribution channel provide different signals.
- Earnings quality: separate HDMC’s operating result from HDFS income, which was affected by a transaction, and track whether LiveWire narrows losses without relying on a forecast as proof.
- Guidance delivery: compare reported results with the revised full-year ranges as Harley-Davidson releases them.
- Capital and execution: consider repurchases and cash separately from operating recovery, while assessing the company’s stated external, dealer and business-plan risks.
Is Harley-Davidson stock a turnaround story?
Harley-Davidson’s raised 2026 guidance and continued repurchases give investors reasons to monitor a possible recovery. But the 2025 decline in consolidated results, HDMC’s swing to an operating loss and LiveWire’s continuing losses leave important questions about earnings and demand.

The cited company results and outlook do not establish HOG’s share-price direction, performance against a benchmark or investor consensus. So the claim that the stock market is backing the turnaround cannot be confirmed from these company fundamentals alone. The defensible conclusion is narrower: management has raised parts of its forecast, and whether that optimism is justified depends on execution and subsequent reported results.
