Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a car enthusiast, a memorable trip might mean driving a legendary circuit, spending a day with two manufacturers’ histories, or following a road whose story is as important as the miles. These four destinations offer different ways to make a car-focused trip worthwhile; they are suggestions, not a ranked or exhaustive list. Check each venue’s current schedule and access rules before you travel.
Drive the Nürburgring
The Nürburgring is the most hands-on choice here: during designated public tourist-drive sessions, visitors can drive their own vehicles on the circuit. The venue has distinct tracks: its official track information lists the Nordschleife at 20.832 km and the Grand Prix Track at 5.148 km. Those are circuit lengths, not a promise that both are available during every public session. See the official track information and tourist-drive schedule before planning.
Know the rules before you arrive
The operator’s FAQ says German road-traffic rules apply, and vehicles must be approved for road use and have valid liability insurance. Tourist drives run only in published operating windows; sessions may be interrupted or cancelled at short notice because of incidents or weather. Treat this as a scheduled driving opportunity, not a guaranteed track day, and check the venue’s updates close to your visit.
Pair Porsche and Mercedes-Benz museums in Stuttgart
Stuttgart makes a natural stop for visitors interested in manufacturer history: the city is home to both the Porsche Museum and the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Visiting both gives the trip a broader perspective than choosing a single marque, with each museum presenting its own company’s vehicles and history. Start with the museums’ official pages for current visitor information: Porsche Museum and Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Look for current exhibitions and verify hours
Porsche lists a special “75 Years of Porsche Motorsport” exhibition running from 1 July 2026 through 17 January 2027. If that period aligns with your trip, check the museum’s current information for details before setting your itinerary. Stuttgart’s visitor listings offer orientation for the Porsche Museum and Mercedes-Benz Museum, but both pages are dated November 2020, so confirm opening hours and current exhibits directly with the venues.
Visit the M24 Motorsport Museum and Le Mans circuit
At Le Mans, the M24 Motorsport Museum brings together stories from endurance racing, Formula 1, rally and IndyCar. It offers separate museum and circuit-tour options, so visitors can choose between focusing on the collection and adding a circuit experience. Check the museum’s main visitor information, visit options and practical information when planning.

Plan around event days
Major events can change access and traffic around the venue. The museum advises visitors to consult the current event calendar because access arrangements may be modified. If your trip overlaps with a race or other major event, check the calendar before booking transport or assuming a circuit visit will be available.
Make Route 66 a historic road trip
Route 66 works especially well for enthusiasts who want the journey itself to be the main attraction. Driving the historic route can be paired with stops at preserved buildings, bridges, road alignments and other sites: the National Park Service says more than 250 such places along Route 66 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its Route 66 travel guide is a useful starting point for discovering sites along the way.

Allow time for stops rather than treating the route as a single point-to-point drive. A guidebook can help organize a historic itinerary, but check road conditions and the status of individual sites separately; the NPS listing does not guarantee that a particular site is open or accessible when you arrive.

| Destination | Best for | Experience | Planning consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nürburgring | Drivers seeking circuit time | Public tourist drives in your own vehicle during scheduled windows | Vehicle legality, liability insurance, track status and operating schedule |
| Stuttgart | Manufacturer and marque history | Two distinct museums in one city | Confirm current hours and exhibitions with each museum |
| Le Mans | Motorsport history and circuit visits | M24 museum admission and separately offered circuit-tour options | Major events may affect access and traffic |
| Route 66 | Road-trip culture and historic places | A driving itinerary with historic-site stops | Plan route details and verify current road and site conditions |
If driving is the priority, the Nürburgring is the clearest fit. For a museum-focused city visit, Stuttgart offers two marque collections; Le Mans is the stronger choice for combining motorsport exhibits with a circuit visit. Route 66 suits travelers who want an extended journey with automotive and road history along the way.
