Will the next-generation Golf be electric?
Yes, according to Volkswagen’s stated plan. In March 2025, Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer said: “Our goal is to build the next-generation electric Golf on the new SSP platform there, along with the high-volume electric T-Roc.” “There” refers to Wolfsburg. The wording describes the company’s goal; it does not guarantee when production or sales will begin. Volkswagen’s March 2025 announcement also describes SSP as an all-electric, fully digitalized and scalable mechatronics platform based on a uniform system architecture.
When is the next Golf coming out?
Volkswagen has not provided a firm launch or retail-sale date for the electric Golf in the official announcements cited here. An earlier production-network announcement placed SSP-based electric models, including the Golf, toward the end of the decade; that is dated planning context, not a confirmed launch schedule. The newer March 2025 statement confirms the intended electric successor and Wolfsburg site, but gives no sale date. The earlier production-network announcement should not be read as a firm deadline.
Volkswagen’s subsequent compact-EV announcements do not establish a Golf timetable. Its 2026 corporate update named the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3 Neo, ID. Polo GTI and ID.3 GTI among compact electric introductions; it listed Q4 2026 for the planned ID. Polo GTI launch and Q1 2027 for the ID.3 GTI. The 2025 annual-report outlook also named the ID. Polo and refreshed ID.3 for 2026. Those dates and models are not a schedule for the next Golf. Volkswagen’s 2026 corporate update and its 2025 annual-report outlook provide that separate context.

Where will it be built, and what platform will it use?
Volkswagen’s stated plan is to build the next-generation electric Golf at its main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, using SSP. The company says Golf production is to move to Mexico to make room at Wolfsburg for modern production processes. These are announced production plans, not confirmation that the future model is already in production.
Volkswagen describes SSP as an all-electric platform with a uniform system architecture, designed to be fully digitalized and scalable. The announcement does not disclose Golf-specific technical details such as battery size, charging capability or motor output.

How will it differ from the current Golf?
The confirmed distinction is powertrain direction: Volkswagen has announced an all-electric next-generation Golf, while the 2024 update was an enhanced version of the existing Golf generation with several powertrain choices. The 2024 launch announcement listed eTSI mild-hybrid, eHybrid and GTE plug-in-hybrid, TSI petrol and TDI diesel versions, alongside styling and infotainment updates. Volkswagen stated about 100 km of electric range for those updated plug-in-hybrid drives. That figure belongs to the 2024-updated plug-in hybrids, not the future electric Golf. Volkswagen’s 2024 Golf announcement also noted that more than 37 million Golf units had been sold across eight generations as of January 2024.

Volkswagen said in March 2025 that the Golf and T-Roc planned as future electric Wolfsburg flagships then represented more than 500,000 units per year in combined volume. That is company-reported context for the two nameplates together, not a forecast for next-Golf sales. Volkswagen’s announcement does not break out a successor-specific volume projection.

What has Volkswagen not announced?
The official sources cited here do not establish a retail price, battery capacity, WLTP range, charging rate, motor output, body dimensions, interior layout, trim lineup, GTI or R derivative plan, reservation program or country-by-country availability. They also do not give a firm consumer launch date. Until Volkswagen publishes those details, estimates or rumors should not be treated as specifications for the production car.
