The 2025 Lexus LX 700h makes a strong case as Toyota’s most luxurious off-road-focused hybrid: it pairs a twin-turbo V6 with electric assistance, and the Overtrail grade adds hardware aimed at rough terrain. But “new king” is a matter of what you value. Its efficiency gain is modest, its size can work against it on tight roads, and early off-road impressions come from a short drive rather than exhaustive testing.
What makes the LX 700h different?
The LX 700h is the first hybrid version of Lexus’s LX. Lexus combines a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6, an electric motor and a nickel-metal-hydride battery with a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic. The system’s combined rating is 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, according to Lexus’s February 2025 announcement.
The battery location depends on the cabin layout: it sits beneath the luggage compartment in two-row versions and beneath the third-row seat in three-row versions. Lexus also describes a contingency feature in which the hybrid system’s starter and alternator let the engine start independently and provide power to the 12-volt battery if the hybrid system is inoperative. That is a manufacturer-described design feature, not a guarantee against every failure or a substitute for diagnosis and repair.
What off-road equipment does the Overtrail add?
For 2025, Overtrail is the LX 700h’s off-road-focused grade, available in two- or three-row configurations. Its equipment makes the capability pitch more concrete than the powertrain alone:

Lexus says the hybrid system can add motor-driven power in low range and allow motor-only driving in selected terrain situations where precise throttle control is useful. The company rates the LX 700h for up to 8,000 pounds of towing and a 27.5-inch water-fording capability. Lexus also says the battery is enclosed in a waterproof tray with a water sensor. How did it feel on the first drive?
Power and road manners
Edmunds reports that hybrid assistance makes the 700h feel more eager than the LX 600, particularly when passing or merging onto a highway. The writer also praised the supportive seats and the relaxed ride in Comfort mode in city and highway driving. Edmunds’s first drive is an initial impression, not a long-term evaluation.

There is a counterpoint to the extra power: Edmunds found the SUV too large and cumbersome for canyon roads. MotorTrend describes the Overtrail as a luxury environment for traveling far off the beaten path, while observing that some elements of the LX design feel old-fashioned. MotorTrend lists a 0–60 mph time of 6.4 seconds as a manufacturer estimate, not an independently measured result. MotorTrend’s first-drive review gives the launch-era context.
Off pavement
Edmunds found the Overtrail smooth over obstacles and composed on an open dirt road. The reviewer explicitly cautioned that the off-road course lasted about ten minutes and was too short to fully test the vehicle’s ability. That makes the drive useful as an early indication of comfort and composure, but not proof of performance across demanding trails or conditions.

How efficient is it, and what are the tradeoffs?
Lexus gives the 2025 LX 700h an EPA-estimated 20 mpg combined. MotorTrend lists 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined for the Overtrail in its launch-era specifications. These are published estimates, not real-world fuel-economy results from the first-drive reviews. Edmunds characterizes the efficiency improvement as modest, so the hybrid’s clearest pitch is added power and low-speed control rather than a dramatic reduction in fuel use.
Space is another consideration. Edmunds says cargo and rear-seat room lag several direct luxury-SUV rivals, but its comparison does not establish a specific cargo-volume shortfall. If passenger or luggage capacity is a priority, compare the exact two- or three-row configuration with the alternatives you are considering rather than assuming the LX’s exterior size translates into class-leading usable space.

Does “new king” hold up?
The title is defensible as a description of the LX 700h’s position in Toyota’s luxury off-road family, not as an objective ranking of every off-road SUV. The 700h combines flagship luxury, substantial combined output and a hybrid system Lexus says can assist in low range. Overtrail adds locking differentials, all-terrain tires and protective equipment. Those features support a serious capability case, while the short initial drive leaves ultimate off-road performance unproven.
MotorTrend’s launch review lists a $115,350 base price for the Overtrail specification. That is a published launch-era figure, not a current dealer quote or an indication of today’s transaction price. The choice comes down to whether the added hybrid power and Overtrail equipment justify a large, relatively thirsty luxury SUV whose tight-road agility and rear-seat and cargo utility are not its strongest points.
