CarExpert described the camouflaged SUV as a possible Pajero Sport successor; Mitsubishi did not identify it. The company later confirmed a new Pajero, but the available reports do not establish that the 2025 prototype was the exact vehicle unveiled in 2026.
What was spotted in hot-weather testing?
On July 16, 2025, CarExpert reported that its spy photography agency photographed a camouflaged SUV undergoing hot-weather testing in Southern Europe. CarExpert assessed it as a likely successor to the Pajero Sport, but framed the vehicle’s identity and its relationship to the Triton tentatively. This was an automotive publication’s spy report, not a Mitsubishi announcement. Read CarExpert’s sighting report.
Is that SUV the new Pajero?
Mitsubishi subsequently announced and unveiled a new Pajero, but the sources do not confirm that it is the same vehicle photographed in Southern Europe. The 2025 sighting can be understood as part of the model’s reported development story; it should not be treated as proof of a direct prototype-to-production link.
Mitsubishi announced the Pajero name on May 29, 2026, and unveiled the all-new model on September 2, 2026. The company says the nameplate is known as Montero in some markets. The overseas Pajero that preceded it had been discontinued in 2021. Mitsubishi’s May 2026 announcement and September unveiling release establish the name and reveal, not the identity of the earlier spy vehicle.

What Mitsubishi has confirmed about the new Pajero
Platform and development
The unveiled SUV is based on the Triton’s ladder frame. Mitsubishi says the cabin and front and rear suspension were developed specifically for the Pajero, with the aim of combining off-road capability with a refined, comfortable ride. That platform relationship does not establish the new SUV’s final performance, equipment or specifications in any particular market. Mitsubishi’s August 2026 development announcement.
Production and rollout plans
Mitsubishi says the new Pajero is built at its production base in Thailand. Its announced sequence is Thailand first, followed by Japan and Australia during fiscal 2026, then approximately 100 countries from fiscal 2027 onward. These are the company’s plans; the announcement does not give every market’s retail date or final local specification. See the official unveiling and rollout announcement.

What later Australian testing means
CarsGuide reported on January 20, 2026, that a camouflaged SUV had been photographed testing in Victoria, Australia. The report raised hot-weather validation as one possible purpose, while also noting that local assessment and tuning could explain the tests. Mitsubishi’s cited announcements do not confirm why the Australian testing took place, so it should not be described as confirmed heat testing. Read CarsGuide’s report.
