New vs. Used Cars: Which Costs Less to Own Over Time?

A used car is not automatically cheaper than a new one. Compare specific vehicles with matching mileage and ownership periods, complete financing terms, local insurance and energy costs, depreciation, maintenance, repairs, warranty coverage and resale value.

Neither new nor used cars is automatically cheaper over a full ownership period. A used car usually has a lower purchase price and has already absorbed some early depreciation, while a new car can offer predictable condition, warranty coverage and lower near-term repair risk. Financing, insurance, fuel, taxes, maintenance, repairs and resale value can reverse that apparent advantage.

The reliable answer comes from comparing two specific vehicles over the same years and miles, using your out-the-door prices, loan offers, insurance quotes, local operating costs and a realistic repair allowance. For any used candidate, obtain a vehicle-history report and pay for an independent mechanical inspection; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a history report is not a substitute for an inspection.

What “cost to own” actually includes

Use one accounting method for both cars and one holding period. Count costs that differ between the candidates, then divide the total by years or miles so the result is comparable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Cost category What to include Important qualification
Depreciation Purchase price minus the vehicle’s expected resale or trade-in value at the end of your period AAA identifies depreciation as the largest average cost in its 2026 new-vehicle study. Resale depends on model, condition, mileage, market and timing.
Financing Interest and other borrowing costs associated with the purchase Compare APR, term, down payment, finance charge and total of payments. Do not use the monthly payment alone.
Insurance Premiums for your driver profile, address, coverage limits and vehicle Obtain quotes for each exact vehicle. National averages are not personal quotes.
Fuel or electricity Expected miles, vehicle efficiency, local gasoline or electricity prices and city/highway mix Driving pattern and local energy prices can outweigh small differences in rated efficiency.
Taxes and fees Sales or purchase tax, title, registration, license and recurring local charges Rates vary by state, locality and vehicle price.
Maintenance and tires Scheduled service, fluids, brakes, tires and other wear items Use the manufacturer schedule for the exact powertrain and mileage.
Repairs Expected failures and a condition-based reserve, especially for an older or high-mileage car For a used car, base the allowance on inspection findings, service records, age, mileage and known maintenance intervals.
Warranty or service contract Remaining factory coverage, deductibles, exclusions and the price of any optional contract Coverage is valuable only for components and failures the contract actually covers.

Do not add the entire loan payment after already counting the vehicle’s purchase price. Principal repays the purchase; interest is the financing cost. A consistent comparison can show the cash price plus interest, or the financed cash flows, but it must not count principal twice.

What current published figures tell you

AAA’s U.S. Your Driving Costs analysis released September 15, 2026 estimates that owning and operating a new vehicle costs $12,863 per year, or $1,071.92 per month, under AAA’s assumptions. The same analysis estimates $4,422 per year in weighted-average depreciation. It covers 34 top-selling models in seven categories, assumes personal use over five years and 75,000 miles, and says actual costs vary with location, driving habits and operating conditions.

AAA changed its 2026 methodology, so its 2026 result is not directly comparable with the prior year. For historical context only, AAA’s 2025 fact sheet reported an overall average new-car cost of $11,577 per year and $4,334 in annual depreciation. The 2025 sample and methodology differed: it averaged five top-selling models in each of nine categories over five years and 75,000 miles. The two annual totals should not be presented as a clean year-over-year trend.

Edmunds’ True Cost to Own framework includes depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, repairs and any applicable federal tax credit. Its published assumptions are five years, 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, a 10% down payment, a 60-month loan and above-average credit for the finance-rate estimate. Edmunds describes TCO as comparative rather than predictive; actual results depend on personal circumstances. Its used-car mileage-and-age estimate assigns 15,000 miles for each year since the model year.

These figures are benchmarks, not proof that a used car is cheaper. The available sources do not establish one current national total-cost result for matched new and used vehicles. Your comparison must be vehicle-specific.

Build an apples-to-apples comparison

  1. Choose equivalent transportation solutions. Match body style, seating, cargo, towing, safety and winter capability before comparing price. A cheaper car that cannot meet your needs is not a lower-cost choice.
  2. Set the same ownership period and mileage. Five years and 75,000 miles is a useful starting point because AAA uses that framework, but use your actual plan. If you drive 8,000 miles annually, do not apply a 15,000-mile fuel or resale assumption.
  3. Get written out-the-door prices. Ask each dealer for the selling price, destination charge, dealer fees, taxes, title and registration. The FTC recommends comparing written out-the-door prices rather than advertised prices.
  4. Record financing separately. Capture the down payment, amount financed, APR, term, finance charge and total of payments. Request competing loan offers before negotiating so a low monthly payment cannot conceal a longer or more expensive loan.
  5. Estimate end-of-period value. Use a defensible resale or trade-in estimate for the same month, mileage and condition. Keep purchase price, financing rate and trade-in value as separate negotiating items; combining them hides the real cost.
  6. Price insurance and operation locally. Get quotes for the actual driver and address on both vehicle identification numbers or exact trims. Enter your annual miles, city/highway ratio and local fuel or electricity price.
  7. Investigate condition and coverage. For a used car, read the Buyer’s Guide, verify warranty status, check recalls, obtain a history report and arrange an independent inspection. Ask the mechanic for a written repair estimate.
  8. Calculate and stress-test. Add depreciation, interest, insurance, energy, taxes, maintenance, tires, repairs and warranty costs. Divide by years and miles, then change the assumptions that are uncertain.

AAA’s customizable calculator allows selection of new or used vehicles, a state, annual mileage of 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000 miles, driving mix, vehicle year/make/model/trim and fuel price. It describes a five-year financed period followed by trade-in and identifies depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, fees and maintenance. Treat the output as an estimate for comparison, not a guaranteed bill.

Why a new car can cost less than an apparently cheaper used car

Lower early repair uncertainty

A new vehicle starts with no prior wear history, and the manufacturer’s warranty generally covers specified defects for a defined time or mileage. That does not make every repair free: wear items, maintenance, exclusions, deductibles and misuse may remain your responsibility. Confirm the written warranty terms and the date or mileage at which coverage ends.

Financing can change the price gap

Lenders may offer different APRs by vehicle age, borrower and term. A lower used-car price can lose its advantage if its APR is higher or the loan is shorter, while a new-car incentive can reduce interest. Compare finance charge and total of payments, not just the amount due each month.

Predictable fuel, tires and service

A newer powertrain may be more efficient, but efficiency is only one input. Calculate fuel or electricity from your miles and local prices. Include tires and scheduled services for both vehicles; a new car still needs them, just usually later in the ownership period.

The depreciation penalty

New vehicles commonly experience their largest depreciation early. In a total-cost calculation, that loss is the original price minus what you can sell or trade the car for at the end. A high purchase price, unpopular trim or rapid market change can make this the largest new-car expense, even when repairs are minimal.

Why a used car can cost less—and when it does not

You avoid part of the first owner’s depreciation

Buying after the steepest early value loss can reduce depreciation over your holding period. The saving is real only if the car’s current price reflects its condition and expected resale value. Compare the same model, age, mileage, trim and equipment rather than assuming every used vehicle has already taken its full depreciation hit.

Condition determines the repair reserve

Age and mileage alone do not reveal maintenance needs. Service records, inspection findings, tire and brake condition, fluid leaks, diagnostic results and deferred maintenance should drive your repair allowance. A car with a lower price but an immediate timing-belt, battery, tire or suspension bill may cost more in its first year than a newer alternative.

History reports have limits

A vehicle-history report can show reported title events, odometer entries, accidents or service records, but it cannot reveal every collision or mechanical fault. The FTC specifically says a history report is not a substitute for an independent inspection. Use the report to identify questions, then have a qualified mechanic inspect the actual vehicle on a lift and provide a written estimate.

Warranty status matters

Read the dealer’s Buyer’s Guide and determine whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty. Verify any remaining manufacturer coverage, transfer rules, time and mileage limits, roadside assistance and exclusions. An optional service contract is not the same as a factory warranty; compare its price, deductible, covered components, claim process and cancellation terms.

Financing: compare the total, not the payment

The FTC recommends asking for the full financing picture: down payment, installment amount and number of payments, APR, finance charge and total of payments. A 72-month loan can make a car look affordable monthly while increasing total interest and leaving you owing more than the vehicle is worth for longer.

Use one of these consistent methods:

  • Cash-equivalent method: compare each vehicle’s out-the-door price, then add the interest you expect to pay on its loan.
  • Cash-flow method: total the down payment and every scheduled payment, then add operating costs and subtract the ending resale value. Do not also add the full purchase price.

Keep taxes and dealer fees in the out-the-door amount. Do not let a trade-in, rebate or optional product obscure the vehicle price and loan terms; list each item separately.

Insurance, energy and local fees can reverse the ranking

Insurance pricing reflects the driver, address, coverage limits, claims history, vehicle repair cost and theft risk. Obtain matching quotes with identical deductibles and liability limits. A general “average insurance” figure cannot tell you which of your two cars is cheaper.

For fuel, use:

annual energy cost = annual miles ÷ real-world miles per gallon × local price per gallon

For an electric vehicle, substitute kilowatt-hours per mile and your home, workplace or public charging prices. Apply the same annual miles and city/highway mix to both candidates. Taxes, title, registration and inspection fees vary by location and vehicle value, so use your state and locality’s actual charges.

How to test whether your conclusion is robust

Repair sensitivity

Increase the used car’s repair allowance to reflect a major component failure or deferred service identified by the inspection. If that single change makes the used option more expensive, the lower sticker price is not a dependable saving.

Mileage sensitivity

Run the calculation at your likely low and high annual mileage. High-mileage drivers put more weight on fuel, tires, maintenance and resale mileage penalties; low-mileage drivers put more weight on depreciation, insurance and fixed fees.

Resale sensitivity

Test a lower end-of-period value for each car. A vehicle with a narrow apparent advantage can switch rankings if resale is weaker than expected. Keep the same ending date and mileage for both scenarios.

Financing sensitivity

Recalculate with the best and worst realistic APR offers you receive. This shows whether the choice depends on a lender quote that may expire or require a particular credit profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Using sticker price only: taxes, fees, financing and depreciation can dominate the total.
  • Comparing different time horizons: a three-year new-car calculation is not fair against a seven-year used-car calculation.
  • Counting principal twice: do not add the purchase price and every loan payment without removing principal.
  • Trusting a monthly payment: a longer term can lower the payment while raising total interest.
  • Using generic insurance or fuel averages: your address, driver, mileage and local prices matter.
  • Skipping the inspection: a clean history report does not establish mechanical condition.
  • Ignoring warranty wording: coverage may exclude wear items, maintenance, electronics or specific components.
  • Assuming all used cars are equal: age, mileage, service history, accident repairs and previous use create large differences.
  • Treating a calculator output as a promise: AAA and Edmunds both describe their figures as estimates that vary with personal circumstances.

When each choice tends to make sense

A new car is more defensible when

  • You plan to keep it long enough to spread the initial depreciation over many years.
  • You value warranty coverage and predictable early ownership more than the lowest purchase price.
  • The new vehicle has a materially better financing offer, efficiency or safety equipment for your needs.
  • You cannot verify a used vehicle’s condition or would struggle to fund an unexpected repair.

A used car is more defensible when

  • The vehicle has documented maintenance, a satisfactory independent inspection and a price that reflects its condition.
  • You can fund a repair reserve and the financing terms do not erase the price advantage.
  • You will drive relatively few miles or can select a model with strong expected resale value.
  • The used car meets your needs without paying for new-car options or capacity you will not use.

These are decision conditions, not universal rules. A well-maintained late-model used car can beat a new car, while a neglected or poorly financed used car can cost more.

Bottom line

To find out which costs less, compare two specific cars—not the labels “new” and “used.” Use the same years and miles, written out-the-door prices, complete financing terms, personal insurance quotes, local energy and tax costs, maintenance and tire schedules, realistic repairs, warranty coverage and expected resale. The new-car averages published by AAA are useful benchmarks under defined U.S. assumptions, but they do not establish a matched national new-versus-used verdict. For a used vehicle, a history report is useful evidence; an independent mechanical inspection is still essential.

As AAA director of automotive engineering Greg Brannon said in the organization’s September 15, 2026 release: “Looking at the full ownership picture—including depreciation and other expenses—can help consumers better understand the total cost of each option.”
