A new mainstream car usually limits early repair exposure with factory warranty coverage and predictable maintenance. A used luxury car may cost less to buy because it has already taken substantial depreciation and may offer more equipment, but higher maintenance, repairs, insurance and fuel costs can erase that initial saving. The defensible answer comes from comparing two specific vehicles over the same years and miles—not from comparing monthly payments or vehicle classes in the abstract.
Use the method below to price the actual cars you are considering. Include the out-the-door price, financing, depreciation, fuel, insurance, taxes and registration, maintenance, tires and a repair reserve. Then verify the used car’s condition and remaining coverage before treating its purchase price as a bargain.

What “cheaper to own” actually includes
The purchase price is only the first line of a total-cost-of-ownership calculation. A car with a lower payment can still cost more over the period you keep it if it depreciates faster, needs premium fuel, carries higher insurance rates or requires expensive repairs. Compare both candidates over the same holding period and annual mileage—five years and the mileage you realistically expect is a practical starting point.

| Cost category | What to enter | Why it can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase and fees | Actual out-the-door price, including destination, dealer fees, taxes and registration | A low advertised price may exclude mandatory charges. |
| Financing | Amount financed, annual percentage rate, term and total interest | Two cars with similar prices can have different finance costs; a cash purchase has no interest but still has an opportunity cost. |
| Depreciation | Purchase price minus expected value when you sell or trade | AAA identifies depreciation as the largest ownership cost in its 2026 study. |
| Fuel | Your annual miles, real-world fuel economy, local fuel price and required fuel grade | A luxury model may consume more fuel or require premium gasoline. |
| Insurance | Quotes for the exact VIN or trim, driver, address, coverage and deductible | Repair costs, theft risk and replacement-value differences can move premiums substantially. |
| Maintenance | Scheduled services, fluids, filters, brakes and other wear items | Luxury parts and labor can cost more, and older cars may be due for major services. |
| Repairs | A vehicle-specific reserve based on age, mileage, condition, inspection and warranty | A used luxury car outside coverage has more uncertain out-of-pocket exposure. |
| Tires and consumables | Replacement tires, alignment, wipers and similar items | Large wheels and performance tires can be costly and may wear faster. |
| Resale | Conservative sale or trade estimate at the end of the period | Subtract the expected resale value; do not treat the original purchase price as the entire cost. |
A simple cash-flow formula is: total ownership cost = out-the-door purchase cost + finance charges + fuel + insurance + taxes and registration + maintenance + repairs + tires − resale value. For a financed purchase, include the vehicle’s full purchase cost and the interest charges, not just the down payment and monthly installments.

AAA’s ownership calculator is built around financing, five years of ownership and trading in at the end, with assumptions that can be customized. Its framework is useful for consistency, but replace generic assumptions with quotes and estimates for your location, driver profile and exact vehicle.
Why depreciation can outweigh the payment
AAA’s 2026 study estimates an average annual ownership-and-operation cost of $12,863 across the vehicles it studied. It estimates average depreciation at $4,422 per year and calls depreciation the single largest ownership cost. Those are study-wide averages, not a matched comparison between one new mainstream car and one used luxury car, so do not apply them as a prediction for your candidates.
Depreciation is the value the car loses while you own it. A new vehicle generally starts its ownership period before its largest early-value drop, whereas a three- or four-year-old luxury vehicle may have already absorbed much of that decline. That can make the used car’s purchase price look attractive. The trade-off is that the remaining value still depends on mileage, condition, service records, accident history, market demand and the model’s reputation. Estimate a realistic ending value for each specific vehicle rather than assuming the used car will retain a fixed percentage.
Use the same end date and mileage for both options. If you plan to sell after five years and drive 12,000 miles annually, estimate each vehicle’s value at five years from now and 60,000 additional miles. A car that costs less upfront but is worth much less at the end may have higher depreciation in dollars.
Where a new mainstream car can save money
Factory coverage limits early repair risk
New-car warranty terms vary by make, model, market and in-service date. The comparison described by Edmunds and the Associated Press says new vehicles commonly have three years of bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years of powertrain coverage, while luxury brands commonly offer four years of bumper-to-bumper coverage. Treat those periods as examples, not guarantees: verify the warranty booklet and the vehicle identification number (VIN) for the exact car.
Warranty coverage does not make maintenance free. Oil changes, tires, brakes and other wear items are normally the owner’s responsibility, and exclusions, mileage limits and required maintenance can apply. The value is the reduced chance that a covered component failure becomes your bill during the covered period.
Routine service is easier to forecast
A new mainstream model has no prior owner’s deferred maintenance. You can follow the manufacturer’s schedule from the beginning and build a service budget with fewer unknowns. That predictability is most valuable if an unexpected repair would disrupt your finances or if you intend to keep the car only through the early warranty years.

Fuel and insurance may be lower, but verify
Mainstream vehicles often emphasize fuel efficiency and use widely available parts, but class-level assumptions are not enough. Obtain an insurance quote for each actual trim and driver. Check the required fuel grade in the owner’s manual and calculate annual gallons from your own mileage; a mainstream car that uses regular fuel can have a meaningful operating-cost advantage over a luxury car that requires premium.
The cost of buying new
You pay for the new car’s unconsumed warranty and condition through a higher purchase price and, often, a larger first-owner depreciation charge. If you replace the car quickly, that depreciation may dominate the calculation. A new car can therefore be the safer cash-flow choice without being the cheapest five-year choice.
Where a used luxury car can save money—and where it can surprise you
Lower entry price and more equipment
A used luxury car can offer higher-grade materials, stronger performance and more features for roughly the price of a new mainstream model. The lower price may reflect depreciation rather than a mechanical defect. However, the original equipment remains expensive to repair: sophisticated electronics, adaptive suspension, all-wheel-drive systems, large wheels and powerful engines can raise parts and labor bills after coverage ends.
Maintenance is a model-specific exposure
In the illustrative comparison reported by the Associated Press from Edmunds, a new 2026 Honda CR-V is priced around a three-year-old BMW X3. The article describes the X3 as offering luxury materials, performance and features, while the CR-V offers a new-car warranty and lower early maintenance exposure. Edmunds estimates the BMW X3’s average maintenance cost at about twice the Honda CR-V’s in that comparison. That is a model comparison, not a rule that every luxury vehicle costs twice as much to maintain as every mainstream vehicle.

Ask for the service schedule and determine which major items are due at the current mileage. A used luxury car that has just completed expensive scheduled work can be a different financial proposition from one approaching tires, brakes, cooling-system service or other age-related repairs.
Fuel requirements can reverse an apparent saving
The same comparison cites up to 25 mpg combined for a 2023 BMW X3 versus up to 40 mpg combined for the CR-V hybrid. Those figures are configuration-specific maximums in that article, not guarantees for every trim or driving pattern. Calculate fuel from the exact engine and drivetrain, your annual miles and local prices. If the luxury model requires premium gasoline, use the premium price in the calculation rather than a regular-grade average.
Insurance and repairs need real quotes
Do not infer insurance from the vehicle’s badge. Request quotes using the actual VIN or a precise trim, your address, driver history, coverage limits and deductible. For repairs, set a reserve based on the inspection findings, age, mileage and warranty status. A low purchase price is not a saving if one uncovered repair consumes the difference.

The CR-V-versus-X3 example: how to read it correctly
The 2026 Edmunds example is useful because it puts a new mainstream vehicle and a three-year-old luxury vehicle at approximately the same purchase price. It illustrates the trade rather than naming a universal winner:
| Factor | New 2026 Honda CR-V | Three-year-old BMW X3 |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase context | About the same price as the used X3 in the cited example | Used luxury vehicle at approximately the CR-V’s price |
| Advantages described | New-car warranty and lower early maintenance exposure | Luxury materials, performance and features; some early depreciation already absorbed |
| Fuel-economy figure cited | Up to 40 mpg combined for the hybrid configuration | Up to 25 mpg combined for the 2023 configuration |
| Maintenance estimate | Lower in Edmunds’ comparison | About twice the CR-V’s average maintenance cost in Edmunds’ estimate |
| Important qualification | Actual results vary by trim, mileage and driving | Actual results vary by trim, condition, service history, fuel grade and repair needs |
The example does not establish the total cost for your purchase. It does not replace insurance quotes, financing terms, a depreciation forecast or an inspection. Its value is showing why matching purchase prices does not match ownership costs.
How to calculate your own five-year comparison
1. Select two exact vehicles
Write down year, make, model, trim, engine, drivetrain, current mileage, asking price and VIN when available. Do not compare “a luxury SUV” with “a mainstream crossover” using class averages. A two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive version, or a hybrid and gasoline version, can have different fuel, tire, insurance and resale costs.
2. Establish the same ownership plan
Choose a holding period and annual mileage that reflect your plan. Five years is a convenient standard because AAA’s calculator uses it, but use a different period if you normally keep cars for two years or ten. Apply the same miles and end date to both vehicles.
3. Record the complete purchase and financing cost
Request an itemized buyer’s order. Add taxes, registration, documentation and destination charges. For each financing offer, record amount financed, term, interest rate and total finance charge. A monthly payment is a budgeting figure, not a cost comparison.
4. Estimate depreciation and resale
Use current market listings and a conservative end-of-period estimate for the exact model, mileage and condition. Subtract that ending value from the purchase cost. If you expect to trade in, use a realistic trade estimate; if you expect to sell privately, account for the effort and selling costs instead of assuming the highest listing price.
5. Price fuel from your usage
Multiply annual miles by the local price per gallon and divide by the fuel economy you reasonably expect. Use the required fuel grade. If the vehicle has multiple EPA ratings, choose the rating for the exact configuration and be conservative about city driving, winter conditions, towing or heavy traffic.

This car obd2 scanner diagnostic tool is equipped with I/M readiness function to check the operations of the e-m-issi0n system on OBD2 compliant vehicles, run I/M monitor readiness test, checking if the pass vehicle s-m-0-g inspection.
6. Obtain insurance quotes
Ask the same insurer—or several insurers—for matching coverage and deductibles on both vehicles. Save the quote dates and assumptions because premiums change. Include registration and local taxes that recur during the ownership period.
7. Build maintenance, tire and repair lines
List scheduled services by mileage, then add tires and wear items. For the used car, ask an independent mechanic to identify deferred work and provide written repair estimates. Add a repair reserve for items that could fail outside warranty; do not set it to zero simply because the car passed a test drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Run three scenarios
Calculate a base case, a low-repair case and a high-repair case. Vary resale value, fuel prices and repair costs rather than hiding uncertainty in one precise-looking total. If the new car wins only under optimistic assumptions for the used car, the warranty may justify paying more for certainty. If the used car wins even after a realistic repair reserve and premium fuel, its lower depreciation may be doing genuine work.
9. Divide by months only after finding total cost
To compare budgets, divide each total by the number of months owned. Label the result as an estimated ownership cost per month, not the loan payment. A payment excludes fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs and depreciation.

Get the FTC-required buying information
Dealers selling used vehicles covered by the Used Car Rule must display a Buyers Guide. It states whether the car is sold as is or with a warranty and identifies important warranty terms. Read it before signing; an “as is” sale can leave you responsible for defects discovered after purchase.
Use a history report, but do not stop there
Check the vehicle history for title branding, reported crashes, ownership and service entries, and check for open recalls. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance is explicit: A vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection.

Verify warranty and service-contract details
Confirm the remaining manufacturer warranty by VIN, including its expiration date, mileage limit, transfer rules and covered components. A dealer or third party may offer an auto service contract. The FTC distinguishes such contracts from warranties: they are optional. Compare the contract price and coverage with the remaining warranty and likely repair costs. Read deductibles, exclusions, maintenance requirements, approved repair facilities, authorization procedures and cancellation terms. Do not assume a service contract covers every expensive component or that its price is automatically justified.
Certified pre-owned: a possible middle path
Certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles can combine a used-car price with a manufacturer’s inspection and additional coverage, but “certified” is not a universal cost guarantee. Programs differ in inspection standards, warranty length, roadside benefits, fees and what happens when the original warranty expires.
Consumer Reports says its analysis of reliability and owner-satisfaction survey data collected in 2024 from more than 300,000 vehicles found that CPO owners reported fewer problems and greater satisfaction than owners of traditional used cars. The same analysis says new cars generally performed better on reliability and satisfaction than used cars, while costing more. These are survey-level findings, not a prediction for a particular VIN. Have a CPO vehicle independently inspected anyway, read the CPO contract and include its purchase price and fees in the same total-cost worksheet.
When each option is more likely to fit
A new mainstream car is usually the stronger financial fit when:
- You value predictable expenses and would struggle to absorb a large repair bill.
- You will keep the car through much of its factory warranty period.
- The exact model has materially better fuel economy or uses regular fuel while the alternative requires premium.
- Insurance quotes, maintenance schedules and resale estimates remain favorable after you price both vehicles.
- The used luxury candidate has incomplete records, an “as is” sale or inspection findings that require immediate work.
A used luxury car can make sense when:
- The purchase discount reflects depreciation and remains after adding a realistic repair reserve.
- The vehicle has complete service records, a clean title and a satisfactory independent inspection.
- You have verified remaining warranty or selected a service contract whose coverage and exclusions make sense for this car.
- You accept potentially higher fuel, insurance, tire and maintenance costs in exchange for its equipment or performance.
- Your ownership period and expected mileage produce a favorable depreciation and resale comparison.
These are decision conditions, not guarantees. A well-maintained used luxury car can cost less than a poorly chosen new car, and a new mainstream car can cost less than an older luxury model with deferred maintenance. The exact inputs decide the result.
Common mistakes that make the comparison misleading
- Comparing payments instead of ownership cost: a longer loan can lower the payment while increasing interest and leaving you owing more than the car is worth.
- Using sticker price as depreciation: include negotiated price, taxes and fees, then subtract the expected resale value.
- Ignoring fuel grade: price premium gasoline when the owner’s manual requires it.
- Assuming a history report proves condition: it cannot reveal every mechanical or flood-related problem; obtain the independent inspection.
- Treating a warranty as maintenance coverage: wear items and scheduled service are commonly excluded.
- Setting the repair budget to zero: even a reliable used car can need tires, brakes, fluids or age-related work.
- Applying averages to a specific car: AAA’s $12,863 and $4,422 figures and the X3-versus-CR-V maintenance estimate are context, not personalized quotes.
- Forgetting resale timing: compare both cars at the same future mileage and date.
- Skipping the VIN check: warranty, recalls, title history and equipment depend on the individual vehicle.
A practical worksheet for your final decision
Fill this table for each candidate before negotiating. Keep receipts, quotes and inspection estimates with the worksheet so another person can audit the assumptions.
| Input | New mainstream car | Used luxury car |
|---|---|---|
| Out-the-door purchase price | Enter quote | Enter buyer’s order |
| Amount financed and total interest | Enter lender figures | Enter lender figures |
| Expected resale value at end date | Enter conservative estimate | Enter conservative estimate |
| Annual miles and fuel cost | Use exact configuration and fuel grade | Use exact configuration and fuel grade |
| Insurance over ownership period | Use actual quotes | Use actual quotes |
| Taxes and registration | Use local amounts | Use local amounts |
| Scheduled maintenance and tires | Use service schedule | Use service schedule plus age-related items |
| Repair reserve | Warranty-adjusted estimate | Inspection- and warranty-adjusted estimate |
| Estimated total ownership cost | Sum costs minus resale | Sum costs minus resale |
| Estimated cost per month | Total divided by months owned | Total divided by months owned |
Bottom line
A new mainstream car generally buys lower early repair risk and clearer warranty protection; a used luxury car generally buys more equipment and potentially lower depreciation. Neither is automatically cheaper. The winner is the vehicle with the lower total cost after you match ownership period and mileage, subtract realistic resale value, and include financing, insurance, fuel, maintenance, tires and repairs. For any used luxury candidate, make the independent inspection and written repair estimate a condition of purchase—not an optional extra.
