Yes, the current Ford Transit Custom Nugget has a credible claim to being the best Nugget so far. It updates both parts of the formula that matter: the Transit Custom donor van is more modern and refined, while the Westfalia-developed camper interior is more practical, better connected and available with more choice of powertrain and body length.
That does not make it perfect. It is still a compact camper, the price places it firmly in premium territory, and the most desirable equipment varies by market and specification. But the new Nugget is more complete than its predecessors, particularly in the longer-wheelbase form.
The new Nugget improves the parts that owners use every day
Ford revealed the next-generation Transit Custom Nugget in August 2023. It remains a factory-sold camper van developed with Westfalia, but it is based on the latest-generation Transit Custom rather than simply updating the previous van underneath an unchanged motorhome conversion.
That distinction matters. A camper van has to work as a vehicle before it becomes a campsite. It needs to be manageable on ordinary roads, comfortable enough for long journeys, easy to park and sufficiently connected for daily use. At the same time, the interior needs to cope with cooking, sleeping, storage and outdoor equipment in a very small footprint.

- ✅ Folding mattress adapted for the cabin of a Ford Transit 150, 250, 350 and Transit Custom Camper RV of the year 2014-2023 and Winnebago Transit. Perfect to get an extra seat in your camper van.
- 👶 Ideal for children and pets: As it is an RV mattress with small dimensions, it is excellent for children or pets to sleep on, although an adult could sleep without problems, as it can support the weight perfectly.
- 🔧 Easy installation: Our bed is very practical since it is installed in less than 3 minutes, you only have to unfold the front bed over the driver and passenger seats. It is very light to transport as it folds up and takes up very little space.
- 🔵 Composition: This mattress is composed of a high density foam (25kg/m3) and a 0.39 in MDF board, which serves to provide stability and safeguard the space left between the two seats of the van. Its fabric is of high quality in grey color and the zippers are extra-strong black.
- 🧼 Washable cover: the front seat bed is removable thanks to its side zippers, which makes it easy to wash. It can be machine washed without temperature and without spin.
The new Nugget addresses both sides of that compromise. The Transit Custom brings a more contemporary cabin and chassis, while the revised camper layout attempts to make better use of the available space.
Why the Transit Custom base van is a meaningful upgrade
The new Nugget benefits from the current Transit Custom’s more modern cabin technology. Ford highlights a 13-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen, a 5G modem, connected navigation, wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. Those features are not glamorous camper equipment, but they are valuable when the van doubles as a family car, commuter vehicle or everyday runabout.
Ford also revised the Transit Custom’s chassis and introduced independent rear suspension. The company’s launch material presents those changes as improvements to refinement and handling. It would be too strong to turn that into a claim about a specific ride quality or driving verdict without a directly comparable test, but the underlying change is important: the Nugget is based on a newer commercial-vehicle platform rather than an aging donor van.
This makes the new model easier to justify for owners who will spend most of the year using it as transport and only part of the year camping. Connectivity, driving manners and the normal cabin experience matter just as much as the kitchen when the vehicle is used every day.

The multi-zone interior remains the Nugget’s defining feature
The Nugget does not use the most conventional compact-camper layout. Instead of treating the interior as one undifferentiated space with a small side kitchen, it divides the van into functional zones. Ford says the multi-zone concept was developed with Westfalia and remains central to this generation.
That arrangement is a major reason the Nugget can feel more like a small apartment than a basic van conversion. Cooking, living and sleeping have more clearly defined areas, so several people can use the van without every activity happening in exactly the same place.
It also explains why comparisons with a Volkswagen California, Mercedes Marco Polo or a professionally converted alternative should be made carefully. Two vans may have similar exterior dimensions and sleeping capacity but offer very different ways of living inside. The Nugget’s appeal is not just the list of equipment; it is the way that equipment is organized.
Westfalia’s role is worth understanding here. Ford names Westfalia as its camper-conversion partner, so buyers researching Westfalia camper vans are looking at a related conversion ecosystem rather than a completely unrelated brand. However, Westfalia’s own dealer and model availability can differ by country, and the presence of the partnership does not mean every Nugget is sold directly through Westfalia in every market.

A kitchen designed for actual use
Ford says the redesigned kitchen has 20 percent more worktop space than the previous model. That is a Ford-supplied comparison rather than an independently verified measurement, but the direction of the change addresses one of the most obvious problems in a compact camper: there is rarely enough room to prepare food without constantly moving something else out of the way.

The current UK product information specifies:
- a 33-litre drawer refrigerator;
- soft-close latches;
- pop-out handles;
- a two-burner integrated hob; and
- hot-and-cold water functions.
A drawer refrigerator is especially useful in a crowded van because it can be accessed from above or from the working side of the kitchen without requiring the same sort of door swing as a conventional upright fridge. Soft-close hardware and pop-out handles are smaller details, but they reduce the daily irritation of a conversion that is opened and closed constantly.
The additional worktop also matters when the van is occupied by more than two people. It will not turn the Nugget into a full-size motorhome kitchen, but it should make breakfast, meal preparation and cleaning less dependent on using the seats or exterior picnic table as overflow space.
Hot water and the rear shower add genuine camping value
The Nugget has an integrated hot-water boiler connected to a rear-mounted shower outlet. Ford presents this as an outdoor shower rather than an indoor bathroom, and that distinction is important.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After swimming, cycling, walking through muddy conditions or spending time at the beach, an external hot-water shower can be more useful than a cramped indoor washroom. It also avoids sacrificing a large amount of interior space to a permanent bathroom in a vehicle whose main selling point is compactness.
Ford offers an optional tailgate tent to provide privacy around the rear of the van. Buyers should check the exact equipment list rather than assuming the tent is included with every version. The same applies to other camping equipment: trim, wheelbase, market and options can change what is supplied as standard.
Powertrain choice is broader than before
The new-generation Nugget was introduced with a 170 PS EcoBlue diesel and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Ford later expanded the range with plug-in-hybrid and all-wheel-drive versions. These are different answers to different ownership needs, not interchangeable badges.
Diesel: the straightforward all-rounder
The diesel automatic is the simplest choice for buyers who want the conventional long-distance camper-van experience. It is the natural fit for people who regularly travel beyond urban areas, do not have dependable charging access and prioritize a familiar powertrain over electric-only urban running.

That is a recommendation based on the vehicle’s role, not a claim that it is the fastest, most economical or most capable version.
PHEV: useful for mixed urban and leisure use
The plug-in-hybrid Nugget uses a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, an 11.8 kWh usable battery and an electric motor. Ford quotes a combined output of 232 PS for this system and describes the van as capable of pure-electric driving. It can be charged from an external charging point or a domestic socket.

This version is most interesting for owners who use their camper as an urban vehicle during the week and a leisure vehicle at weekends. Electric driving could make short local journeys quieter and more suitable for city use, provided the owner can charge regularly.
There are important qualifications. Electric range, emissions, payload, towing capacity and ordering status depend on market and homologation. The existence of a UK or European specification does not make those figures universal. Anyone considering the PHEV should ask the dealer for the exact range, payload and charging information for the vehicle being ordered, rather than relying on a headline figure from another country.
AWD: extra traction, not an off-road transformation
The all-wheel-drive Nugget is aimed at customers who need additional traction when reaching outdoor destinations. It may be useful on slippery tracks, wet grass, snow or loose surfaces where a two-wheel-drive van could struggle.
AWD should not be confused with a purpose-built off-road camper. The Nugget remains a large, road-oriented compact van with the ground clearance, dimensions and bodywork limitations of that format. The Active model’s more rugged styling also broadens the lifestyle appeal, but Active is primarily an appearance and equipment variation. It is not proof of serious off-road hardware or tested off-road capability.
SWB or LWB: the decision that changes the Nugget most
Ford added a longer-wheelbase Nugget as part of the expanded 2025 range. This is arguably the most important option in the “best Nugget yet” argument because it targets the standard model’s biggest weakness: limited space.
| Version | Best suited to | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SWB Titanium | Daily driving, shorter trips and owners who value easier parking | More compact exterior dimensions and a better everyday-vehicle compromise | Less kitchen, storage and personal space |
| LWB Titanium | Longer trips, families and fuller occupancy | Additional kitchen and storage capacity | More length to manage in towns, car parks and narrow access roads |
| PHEV | Mixed city and leisure use | Pure-electric capability for suitable short journeys | Charging, payload, range and local availability must be checked |
| AWD | Outdoor destinations where extra traction is useful | More confidence on slippery or loose surfaces | It remains a compact road camper, not a dedicated off-roader |
| Active | Style-led outdoor buyers | Rugged-looking design and lifestyle-focused equipment | Styling should not be mistaken for maximum practicality or off-road ability |
The longer wheelbase brings more kitchen and storage space, which could make a bigger difference to day-to-day comfort than a styling package or a modest equipment upgrade. A report by New Atlas also described a fully installed toilet room in a specific longer-wheelbase configuration. That should be treated as configuration- and market-specific information, not as evidence that every LWB or SWB Nugget has a toilet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor couples who mainly tour in good weather, the SWB may remain the more appealing choice. Its compactness helps on ordinary roads and makes it less cumbersome when the vehicle is being used away from campsites. For families or anyone planning longer trips, the LWB is likely to be the more convincing choice because storage and preparation space are difficult to add after purchase.
What the Nugget still cannot solve
The Nugget is still a compact camper van. Its size is its greatest advantage in daily use and its biggest limitation when camping.
Even with the improved layout, buyers should expect compromises in:

- RAPID INFLATION: Features a quick inflation system that allows for efficient setup and deflation for convenient storage in the vehicle trunk when the product is not in use

- interior movement when several people are inside;
- storage for clothing, food and bulky camping equipment;
- bathroom facilities in standard configurations;
- the amount of room available for bicycles and outdoor toys; and
- the ability to carry several passengers, water, luggage and sports equipment without approaching payload limits.
More worktop space does not remove the need to pack carefully. The outdoor shower reduces the need for an indoor bathroom, but it does not provide the privacy or all-weather convenience of a full washroom. The LWB improves the situation, but it also makes the van less compact.
This is why “best” has to be defined by the buyer. The Nugget may be the most resolved version of Ford’s compact camper formula, but a larger motorhome will still offer more interior space, while a simpler conversion may offer a lower purchase price.
Price and market availability
The current Ford UK commercial-vehicle listing supplied for this article lists the Transit Custom Nugget SWB from £63,150 excluding VAT. The associated price-list information identifies an effective date of April 1, 2026. Prices, taxes, equipment, delivery charges, options and availability are volatile, so this should be treated as a dated UK reference rather than a universal current price.
That price puts the Nugget in a premium category. It should be compared with the Volkswagen California, Mercedes Marco Polo and professionally converted camper vans, not with a basic used-van conversion. The cost of the base vehicle is only part of the decision: wheelbase, powertrain, AWD, trim, privacy equipment, bike-carrying hardware and other options can materially change the final figure.
Before making a trip to a dealer, check the Ford Transit Custom Nugget price for the exact country, trim, wheelbase and powertrain you want. A dealer should also confirm whether the quoted figure includes VAT, registration-related costs, delivery, optional equipment and any market-specific taxes.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Equipment and accessories to check before ordering
Ford highlights a camping table and two camping chairs with integrated storage locations as part of the Nugget’s outdoor-living equipment. That is a useful touch because it means the van’s exterior living area is considered in the design rather than left entirely to the owner.
Owners who want to recreate or supplement that arrangement may also want a portable camping table and chairs. A generic folding set is not necessarily the same equipment supplied by Ford, and it should be chosen around packed size, weight, weather resistance and the storage space actually available in the selected Nugget.
Other equipment may include or be available as options depending on the specification:
- bike racks or a tailgate bike carrier;
- roof base carriers and roof-gallery equipment;
- an awning or exterior shelter;
- a tailgate tent for shower privacy; and
- other carrying or camping accessories listed by Ford.
If you are searching for a Ford Nugget bike rack or a campervan tailgate tent, do not buy on the vehicle name alone. Check the model year, SWB or LWB body, roof type, trim, tailgate arrangement and market specification. A rack designed for one Transit Custom configuration may not be suitable for another, and adding equipment also affects payload.

Which Nugget should you buy?
Choose the SWB diesel automatic if…
- you want one vehicle for normal driving and occasional camping;
- you regularly use tight car parks, urban streets or narrow access roads;
- you do not need the maximum kitchen and storage capacity; and
- you prefer the simpler long-distance touring case for a diesel powertrain.
Choose the LWB if…
- you expect to spend several nights away at a time;
- more than two people will use the van regularly;
- you carry cooking supplies, outdoor gear or bicycles; or
- the standard Nugget’s storage and worktop limitations are likely to become frustrating.
Choose the PHEV if…
- you can charge at home or at regular destinations;
- many of your everyday journeys are short and urban;
- you have verified the local electric range and payload; and
- the PHEV is actually available to order in your market.
Choose AWD if…
- you routinely reach campsites or outdoor locations with slippery, loose or snowy access roads;
- the added traction has a real use in your travel plans; and
- you understand that AWD does not provide the capability of a dedicated off-road vehicle.
Choose Active if…
- you like the more rugged visual treatment;
- its equipment matches your needs; and
- you are not paying extra simply because the styling suggests off-road ability.
What to confirm with a dealer
Because the Nugget range is specification-sensitive, a careful order conversation is more useful than relying on a generic brochure. Confirm:
- Exact body and powertrain: establish whether the quote is for SWB or LWB, diesel, PHEV or AWD.
- Payload: ask for the usable payload after factory options, then account for passengers, water, food, luggage, bikes and accessories.
- Included equipment: verify whether the table, chairs, shower privacy equipment, bike hardware and other camping items are standard or optional on that vehicle.
- Bathroom layout: if a toilet room is important, confirm the exact floor plan and market specification in writing.
- Charging details: for a PHEV, confirm electric range, charging equipment, charging time, towing limits and payload for the local homologated version.
- Fitment: check that roof carriers, bike racks, awnings and tents match the wheelbase, roof and tailgate configuration.
- Final price: separate VAT, registration costs, delivery, options and any local taxes before comparing the Nugget with rivals.
Verdict: probably the best Nugget yet, but not the best camper for everyone
The new Ford Transit Custom Nugget makes a stronger case than earlier generations because it improves the entire product rather than concentrating on a single headline feature. The base van is more modern, the cabin is better connected, the independent rear suspension represents a meaningful platform update, and the Westfalia-developed interior retains its distinctive multi-zone layout.
The more useful kitchen, 33-litre drawer fridge, hot-and-cold water and rear hot-water shower make the van better suited to real camping. The PHEV and AWD versions broaden its appeal, while the LWB model directly addresses the standard Nugget’s shortage of storage and preparation space.
Its limitations are equally clear: compact-camper compromises remain, the price is high, and not every desirable feature is available on every version. For most buyers, the LWB is the strongest argument for calling this the best Nugget so far. For others, the smaller SWB diesel will be the more sensible all-rounder. Either way, the new Nugget is best understood not as a universal winner, but as Ford’s most complete and versatile Nugget generation to date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the new Ford Nugget sold in the United States?
The official product evidence for this model is UK- and European-focused. Ford’s UK commercial-vehicle site actively promotes the Transit Custom Nugget, while it is not presented as a current model on Ford’s US consumer showroom. US buyers should check with Ford in their specific market rather than assume it can be ordered through an American dealer.
Does every Ford Transit Custom Nugget have a toilet?
No. A fully installed toilet room has been reported for a specific longer-wheelbase configuration, but it should not be treated as standard across the Nugget range. Confirm the exact floor plan and market specification before ordering.
Is the Nugget Active an off-road camper?
No. Active is primarily a lifestyle and equipment variation with more rugged styling. The separate AWD version provides additional traction, but the Nugget remains a compact, road-oriented camper rather than a dedicated off-road vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
Which Ford Nugget is best for long trips?
The longer-wheelbase Titanium is the strongest general recommendation because its additional kitchen and storage space address the standard model’s main limitations. The right choice still depends on passenger count, payload, parking needs and local powertrain availability.
The Bottom Line
The Transit Custom Nugget is plausibly the best Nugget yet because it is the most complete version of the formula: a more modern daily vehicle, a more usable camper interior and more meaningful choice between compactness, space, electric operation and traction. Buy the SWB for everyday maneuverability, the LWB for extended travel, the PHEV for chargeable urban use and AWD only when its traction advantage solves a real problem.
