Yes, you can connect a compatible Apple Watch to a Tesla. Tesla supports an official Apple Watch app and a Watch Key feature that lets the watch work as a local Bluetooth vehicle key. The setup is not completed through the Apple Watch’s ordinary Bluetooth audio-pairing menu. Instead, you install the Tesla app on the watch, open it near the vehicle, and complete Tesla’s Watch Key setup flow.
Check compatibility before you start
Tesla’s documented requirements are more specific than simply owning an Apple Watch. Confirm each item below before troubleshooting the setup:
- Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation), or a newer supported model.
- watchOS: Version 11.0 or later.
- Tesla mobile app: Version 4.39.5 or later.
- Tesla vehicle software: Firmware version 2024.44.25 or later.
- iPhone: Paired with the Apple Watch and signed in to the Tesla mobile app.
- Location: You must be inside or near the Tesla when setting up Watch Key.
That means older Apple Watch models are not automatically compatible. Tesla’s current minimum is Series 6, SE (2nd generation), or Ultra (1st generation), together with the required watchOS, Tesla app, and vehicle software versions. Software support can change, so check for newer updates if your menus do not match the steps below.
How to connect an Apple Watch to a Tesla
1. Update the iPhone, Apple Watch, Tesla app, and vehicle
Before installing or opening the watch app, update the iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest versions available for your devices. Tesla specifically recommends updating both before using Tesla on the watch.

Also update the Tesla mobile app to at least version 4.39.5. The vehicle must be running firmware 2024.44.25 or later. Vehicle software updates are installed through the Tesla’s normal software-update process; the exact timing depends on the vehicle and Tesla’s rollout.
Make sure the iPhone is paired with the watch and that the iPhone’s Tesla app is signed in to the Tesla account associated with the vehicle. The watch app relies on that established Tesla account and device relationship during setup.
2. Install Tesla on the Apple Watch
The most straightforward installation method uses the paired iPhone:
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Scroll to Available Apps.
- Find Tesla and tap Install.
You can also install the app directly from the watch:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press the Apple Watch Digital Crown.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Tesla.
- Tap Get or the displayed price, if applicable.
- Double-click the Apple Watch side button when prompted.
If Tesla is installed on the iPhone but does not appear under Watch > My Watch > Available Apps, recheck the watchOS and Tesla app requirements before assuming the vehicle is incompatible.
3. Open the Tesla app on the watch near the vehicle
Go to the Apple Watch app list by pressing the Digital Crown, then open Tesla. Do this while you are inside or close to the Tesla. If you have more than one Tesla associated with the account, select the appropriate vehicle if the app presents a vehicle selector. Tesla says that when the owner has a Tesla vehicle, it normally appears by default in the watch app.
4. Select “Set Up Watch Key”
With the vehicle nearby, open the Tesla app on the Apple Watch and select Set Up Watch Key. Follow the instructions shown on the watch and in the vehicle.
Watch Key is a vehicle-key setup flow, not a conventional Bluetooth accessory connection. You should not expect to add the Tesla through the Apple Watch’s Bluetooth settings as if it were headphones or a speaker.
When setup finishes, Tesla treats the watch as a key in much the same general manner as Phone Key. The watch communicates with the vehicle over Bluetooth proximity, allowing it to authenticate locally when you approach the car.
5. Test the Apple Watch at the driver’s door
After setup, close and lock the vehicle, then approach the driver’s door with the watch on your wrist. Tesla describes Watch Key as allowing the vehicle to lock or unlock without pressing a button, similarly to Phone Key.

What can the Tesla Apple Watch app do?
The exact controls vary by Tesla model, vehicle software, and Tesla app version, but Tesla’s watch app and owner documentation describe controls that can include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Locking and unlocking the vehicle
- Opening the frunk
- Opening or closing the trunk
- Checking charging status
- Opening the charge port
- Controlling climate functions
Do not assume that every function available in the iPhone Tesla app will also appear on the watch. A watch app can provide convenient vehicle controls and Watch Key functionality without being a complete replacement for the phone app.
Will Apple Watch Tesla Key work without the iPhone nearby?
Watch Key is intended to work locally over Bluetooth when the watch is within range of the compatible Tesla. This is the important distinction between using the watch as a nearby key and using it to send remote commands over the internet.
An authenticated local key does not necessarily need an active internet connection every time it unlocks the vehicle. Tesla’s key documentation explains that an authenticated phone key can continue to perform key functions without an internet connection, while Tesla describes Watch Key as a key for local vehicle access. In practical terms, the watch may be able to unlock or lock the car when the iPhone is not immediately beside you, provided Watch Key was completed successfully, Bluetooth is enabled, the watch has sufficient battery, and the watch remains within the vehicle’s usable Bluetooth range.
That does not mean every Tesla command works offline. Remote actions that require communication with Tesla’s servers—such as commands sent from outside Bluetooth range—are different from local key authentication. They may require the iPhone, an internet connection, or another supported network path. Avoid treating the Apple Watch as a guaranteed replacement for the phone for every remote feature.
Wi-Fi-only and cellular Apple Watch models should not be assumed to behave identically for remote commands. Watch Key’s local Bluetooth function is the relevant feature for nearby access; internet-dependent watch controls can depend on the watch’s connection, the iPhone, the vehicle, and Tesla’s service availability.
What to do if Watch Key setup fails
Tesla does not appear on the Apple Watch
- Confirm the watch is a Series 6, SE (2nd generation), Ultra (1st generation), or newer supported model.
- Confirm the watch runs watchOS 11.0 or later.
- Update the Tesla app to version 4.39.5 or later.
- Confirm the vehicle runs firmware 2024.44.25 or later.
- On the iPhone, open Watch > My Watch > Available Apps and install Tesla.
- Verify that the iPhone and Apple Watch are paired and that the Tesla app is signed in.
If the app still does not appear, restart the watch and iPhone after installing updates, then check the Available Apps list again.
“Set Up Watch Key” does not complete
Stand beside or inside the Tesla during setup. The watch needs to communicate with the vehicle at close range.
If the vehicle is already connected to multiple phone keys, Tesla says temporarily turning off Bluetooth on the mobile device can reduce the number of active connections and allow Watch Key setup to complete. This is a setup troubleshooting step—not a permanent configuration:

- Move close to the vehicle.
- Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the mobile device or devices that may be connected as phone keys.
- Retry Set Up Watch Key in the Tesla watch app.
- Restore Bluetooth after setup finishes.
Use caution if other people are relying on their phones as keys while you perform this test. They may temporarily lose normal Phone Key behavior until Bluetooth is restored.
The watch app is installed, but the Tesla will not unlock
Check the following:
- Watch Key setup actually completed rather than stopping partway through.
- Bluetooth is enabled on the watch and relevant paired device.
- The watch is close enough to the vehicle.
- The watch still has battery power.
- The watch, Tesla app, and vehicle meet the required software versions.
- You are testing the vehicle associated with the Tesla account used during setup.
Move closer to the driver’s door and wait briefly before retrying. If the watch remains unreliable, use the key card and repeat the software and Watch Key checks rather than locking yourself out while experimenting.
A remote command does not respond
First determine whether you are testing a local key action or an internet-dependent remote command. Unlocking the nearby vehicle through Watch Key is not the same as asking the Tesla service to start climate control while you are away from the car.
For a remote action, reopen the Tesla app, confirm the watch and iPhone have current software, and check whether the vehicle is reachable. A temporary network or Tesla-service issue can affect remote controls even when local Bluetooth key access is working.

The official Tesla app is the preferred starting point because Tesla documents its Apple Watch support, Watch Key setup flow, software requirements, and vehicle controls.
Independent apps such as Watchla and Remote for Tesla advertise additional watch controls, complications, Siri Shortcuts, and Bluetooth-related features. They are separate products, however, and should not be presented as Tesla-approved or guaranteed to work with every vehicle or software version. Tesla’s owner manuals state that Tesla does not support third-party applications contacting the vehicle.
If you try one of these apps, review its privacy, permissions, compatibility, and support information independently. Do not use a third-party app as the only access method to your vehicle, and do not assume that a feature advertised by an independent developer has the same reliability or security model as Tesla’s official Watch Key feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep a physical Tesla key card as a backup
An Apple Watch is convenient, but it is still a battery-powered device. A dead watch, a failed Watch Key setup, software trouble, or an unexpected Bluetooth problem can leave you without convenient access if you have no backup.
A Tesla key card is the sensible physical fallback. Tesla describes key cards as useful when a phone is unavailable, out of battery, or being used by someone else. Tesla vehicles including Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck use key cards for entry and operation, although the exact key-card compatibility depends on the vehicle and production year.
For authenticity, check the official Tesla Key Card source first. Marketplace listings can vary, so verify the seller, card authenticity, and compatibility with your exact Tesla model before buying a replacement. Tesla’s shop listing, as checked for this guide, indicated compatibility with Model S and Model X vehicles produced in 2021 or later, all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, and Cybertruck; availability can change, and the listing was showing out of stock at the time of research.

Store the key card somewhere separate from the phone and watch. That way, a depleted wearable battery does not also leave you without a way to enter and operate the car.
Apple Watch charging matters
Watch Key cannot help if the watch has run out of power. Charge the watch before relying on it for vehicle access, particularly before a long trip or when leaving the physical key card at home.
Recommended Free Tools
If you need replacement equipment, use a charger or charging stand specifically compatible with your Apple Watch model. A charging accessory keeps the watch powered; it does not add Tesla functionality or improve the vehicle’s Bluetooth range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Apple Watch connect to a Tesla?
No. Tesla’s documented minimum is Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation), or newer supported hardware running watchOS 11.0 or later. The Tesla app must be version 4.39.5 or later, and the vehicle must run firmware 2024.44.25 or later.
Do I pair the Apple Watch with the Tesla through Bluetooth settings?
No. Install the official Tesla app on the watch, open it near the vehicle, and select Set Up Watch Key. Watch Key is Tesla’s vehicle-key setup flow, not ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing.
Can I unlock my Tesla with an Apple Watch when my iPhone is not nearby?
Watch Key uses local Bluetooth proximity and may unlock or lock a compatible vehicle when the watch is within range, even when the iPhone is not beside you. This does not guarantee that remote, internet-dependent Tesla commands will work without the iPhone or an internet connection.
What should I do if Watch Key will not set up?
Stand near the vehicle, confirm all hardware and software requirements, and check that the iPhone is paired with the watch and signed in to Tesla. If the vehicle is connected to multiple phone keys, Tesla says temporarily turning off Bluetooth on the mobile device can reduce active connections during setup. Restore Bluetooth afterward.
Should I keep a Tesla key card if I use Apple Watch Key?
Yes. A physical key card is a practical backup for a dead watch battery, Bluetooth problems, or failed setup. Check compatibility with your exact Tesla model and verify the source and seller before buying a replacement.
The Bottom Line
The reliable setup is: use a supported Apple Watch and current software, install the official Tesla app from Watch > My Watch > Available Apps, open Tesla near the vehicle, and select Set Up Watch Key. The watch can then provide nearby Bluetooth key access and selected vehicle controls, but it does not replace every phone-based or internet-dependent Tesla function. Keep a physical key card charged and available as your backup.
