Why was the Nedlands roundabout delayed?
On 14 March 2025, PerthNow reported that the City of Nedlands had secured $1,549,200 in federal Black Spot funding for road-safety measures that included a roundabout at The Avenue and Birdwood Parade. The project had reached detailed design, but construction was delayed amid staffing challenges, according to a City spokesperson quoted in the report. PerthNow, 14 March 2025
The spokesperson said detailed design began in September 2024 and construction had originally been scheduled to finish by the end of that financial year. The City secured an extension of time for the grant through the end of December 2025. The delay and extension were the status reported in March 2025, not the project’s eventual outcome.
Was the roundabout built?
Yes. The City announced on 11 December 2025 that the roundabout was complete and open. It described the opening as the first major milestone in a broader road rehabilitation project, with mid-block treatments expected to continue until late February 2026, weather permitting. Construction planning had included a closure of the intersection of The Avenue, Gallop Road, Birdwood Parade and Bruce Street from 24 to 28 November 2025 for roundabout installation. In an October 2025 notice, the City said WCP Civil had been engaged and the wider works were expected to finish by late February 2026, weather permitting. City of Nedlands project page

Why are two funding amounts reported?
They are figures published at different times and in different records, so they should not be treated as the same amount. PerthNow reported $1,549,200 in federal Black Spot funding in March 2025. The Australian Government project page, last updated 23 April 2026, lists a contribution of $1,818,963 for the wider project. The available records do not provide an itemized explanation of the difference.

What was the connection to the fatal Dalkeith crash?
The March 2025 report linked the project to public concern following the death of Elizabeth Pearce, who died on 15 February 2025. It reported that the crash involved an Uber in which she was riding and a Jaguar allegedly driven by Rhys Bellinge. Those were allegations reported at the time, not the latest account of the legal case.

In a later PerthNow report published on 6 September 2025, Bellinge was reported to have pleaded guilty to manslaughter and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm under the influence of alcohol. PerthNow, 6 September 2025
The crash was relevant to the reporting about the nearby road-safety project, but the available information does not establish that the roundabout would have prevented this particular crash.

What crash history was reported for The Avenue?
PerthNow reported 17 previously reported crashes on The Avenue in the five years to September 2024; three required medical treatment. The figure refers to The Avenue, not specifically to the intersection where the roundabout was built. PerthNow, 14 March 2025
The City and Australian Government records establish that the roundabout and wider funded project were completed, but the available sources do not provide a post-completion evaluation showing whether crashes or injuries have fallen.
