Continental’s ContiSense and ContiAdapt are two parts of a 2017 concept tire: ContiSense monitors tire conditions and can alert the driver, while ContiAdapt changes tire pressure and rim width to alter the contact patch. Continental says the combined concept can adapt its footprint to road conditions, but the official material describes a concept—not a tire confirmed for consumer purchase or retrofit.
What ContiSense monitors
Continental describes ContiSense as a tire-sensing system built around conductive, rubber-based sensors. In the concept, they continuously monitor tread depth and tire temperature. The system also includes a circuit intended to detect when an object penetrates the tread and alert the driver before pressure loss triggers a conventional pressure-based warning. These are capabilities Continental describes for the concept, not independently verified production results. Continental’s ContiSense and ContiAdapt overview
Continental has also discussed adding sensors in the future to detect information about the road surface, such as temperature or snow. That prospective capability should not be confused with the specific tread-depth and tire-temperature monitoring described for ContiSense.
How ContiAdapt changes the footprint
ContiAdapt is the concept’s physical adaptation system. Continental describes micro-compressors integrated into the wheel and an adjustable-width rim. These components work together to change tire pressure and the width of the contact area—the part of the tire touching the road. A larger contact area paired with lower pressure is intended to help grip on slippery surfaces; a smaller contact area paired with higher pressure is intended to reduce rolling resistance on smooth roads.
#1 Best Overall
- All-Round Road Performance: Continental designed the Grand Prix 5000 to ride faster and more comfortably with increased puncture protection, from daily training miles to race day.
- BlackChili Compound: Continental's tread compound combines the latest polymers with specially developed carbon black particles and fillers to balance grip and rolling resistance.
- Vectran Breaker: This puncture protection layer, spun from liquid crystal polymer, is lighter, more flexible and more cut resistant than a comparable nylon breaker.
- LazerGrip and Active Comfort Technology: A lasered micro profile on the shoulders aids cornering grip, while Active Comfort Technology absorbs road vibration for a smoother ride.
- Two Tires per Pack: 700x25 (ETRTO 25-622) folding bead clinchers, 3/330 TPI casing; 52-123 PSI per Continental. For inner tubes on hooked rims.
For the combined concept, Continental describes three tread zones for wet, slippery and dry surfaces. Adjusting pressure and rim width changes the footprint and activates different zones. The company presents the system as adapting to four conditions: wet, uneven, slippery and normal. These are design claims, not independent evidence of improved grip, braking, fuel economy or tire life. Continental’s 2017 announcement of ContiAdapt
ContiSense and ContiAdapt are different functions
| System | Purpose | Described mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| ContiSense | Monitor tire condition and provide alerts | Conductive rubber-based sensors and a puncture-detection circuit |
| ContiAdapt | Change the contact patch to suit conditions | Wheel-integrated micro-compressors and an adjustable-width rim |
| Combined concept | Link sensing with footprint adaptation | Continental says pressure and rim width alter the footprint and engage different tread zones |
Continental introduced the technologies at IAA 2017 and described merging them in one concept tire. The company’s account explains the intended design; the available official material does not establish current retail availability or provide independent comparative performance statistics.

- Made for New Road Riders: Continental designed the Ultra Sport III as a modern tire for those new to road cycling, at home on a race bike or a classic city drop-bar bike.
- PureGrip Compound: Derived from an activated-silica mix, PureGrip is named for what it delivers, exceptionally good grip and durability, per Continental.
- Renewed Tread Design: The third-generation Ultra Sport is completely renewed with a dynamic tread pattern and comes in a wide range of sizes and colors.
- E25 E-Bike Rated: Continental rates the Ultra Sport III for e-bikes up to 25 km/h, with a high-quality structure that resists premature wear from the added driving force.
- Two Tires, Size Details: Two 700x28 (ETRTO 28-622) folding bead clinchers for 622 mm (700c) rims; 52-116 PSI per Continental. Use with inner tubes.
How this differs from today’s TPMS
A tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warns drivers about significant underinflation; it does not adapt tire width or change the contact patch. NHTSA says vehicles may use direct TPMS sensors or indirect systems that infer pressure loss from wheel-speed and other vehicle sensors. ContiSense and ContiAdapt, by contrast, were presented as a combined concept for monitoring conditions and changing the footprint. NHTSA tire safety guidance

Because the ContiSense/ContiAdapt system is described as a concept rather than an established consumer tire, drivers should continue ordinary tire maintenance. NHTSA advises checking all tires, including the spare, at least once a month when cold—meaning the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours—and inflating them to the pressure on the vehicle’s tire-information placard or in the owner’s manual. A tire-pressure gauge is useful for these checks. Do not substitute the maximum pressure molded on the tire sidewall for the vehicle’s recommended pressure. NHTSA also cautions that TPMS does not replace regular checks.
