BMW recall 24V-608 covers 720,796 potentially affected vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2024 annual recall report, published in April 2025. The defect involves possible liquid intrusion at an electrical connector on the coolant pump, which could cause a short circuit and, in rare cases, a fire. The figure is the potential recall population—not the number of cars known to have failed or caught fire. Check your BMW’s VIN to see whether it has an open recall.
What is the BMW recall about?
BMW says small drops of liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation system could reach and penetrate the coolant pump’s electrical connector. Over time, that could cause a short circuit and, rarely, a thermal event or fire. The risk is a possibility, not a prediction that every affected car will fail.
BMW’s service bulletin describes the concern this way: “Small droplets of liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation (PVC) system could drip onto and penetrate into the coolant pump’s electrical socket and plug connector.”

Which BMWs may be included?
BMW’s service bulletin lists certain 2012–2018 model-year vehicles produced from February 7, 2011, through June 30, 2018. The listed vehicle families include X1, Z4, 5 Series, X5, 2 Series, X3, X4, 3 Series, and 4 Series. Not every vehicle in those model families or years is necessarily covered; eligibility depends on the individual vehicle.
How to check whether your BMW has an open recall
- Find your vehicle identification number (VIN), usually visible through the windshield on the driver’s side or on vehicle paperwork.
- Enter it in NHTSA’s official recall lookup. NHTSA also offers search options by license plate or by vehicle year, make, and model, but a model match alone does not confirm eligibility.
- If the lookup shows an unrepaired 24V-608 recall, contact an authorized BMW center to arrange the campaign inspection and remedy. NHTSA says recalls do not expire.
What BMW will do if the recall applies
BMW’s owner notice says an authorized center will inspect the coolant pump and connector, replace them if necessary, and install a shield to divert fluid. The recall work is free, and BMW estimates it will take about one hour. Whether replacement is needed depends on the inspection.
