The Boring Company is developing the privately funded project, which is designed to carry passengers in Tesla vehicles between downtown Nashville and Nashville International Airport. In August 2026, the company reported two tunnel-boring machines actively tunneling; the U.S. Department of Transportation said in June 2026 that the $200 million project was expected to open in spring 2027.
What is Nashville’s “Tesla tunnel”?
The Music City Loop is an underground transit system being developed by The Boring Company, the tunnel construction company behind the project. Tesla is not building or operating the tunnel as a company. Its vehicles are intended to carry passengers through it.
Tennessee and The Boring Company announced the project on July 28, 2025. The company describes the proposed network as almost 25 miles long, connecting downtown destinations and Nashville International Airport (BNA). That current network description is broader than the roughly 10-mile initial phase described at launch, so the full buildout should not be confused with what was originally announced for the first phase.
Where will the Music City Loop go?
The airport alignment described by The Boring Company runs from Lot 16 near the State Capitol toward BNA. Its stated route follows Rosa L. Parks Boulevard, Lafayette Street and Murfreesboro Pike before reaching Donelson Pike. A separate Broadway alignment is described as extending west along West End Avenue.

The company says the airport-to-Lower Broadway trip will take about 10 minutes. That is a company estimate for the described route, not a measured travel time from an operating Nashville service. The final route and any expansion remain subject to change.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s February 2026 staff analysis considered a possible branch to Terminal II, in addition to airport tunnel sections, portals, a passenger station and roadway connections. The analysis also covered horizontal emergency-egress tunnels and hatches. It does not establish that every considered feature or branch will be built as described.

Will Tesla cars drive through the tunnel?
Yes. The Boring Company says passengers will ride in dedicated Tesla vehicles, initially Model Ys and Model Xs. Trained human Loop drivers—not a stated autonomous-driving service—will operate them.
The company describes trips as direct, with no intermediate stops. That stop pattern differs from a conventional route that picks up and drops off passengers at multiple stations, and it means the published airport-to-Lower Broadway time should not be read as a promise of the same duration for every origin and destination.

How much will it cost taxpayers?
Tennessee and The Boring Company described the Loop at launch as 100% privately funded, with zero taxpayer investment. Separately, the U.S. Department of Transportation put the project cost at $200 million in June 2026. That is the stated project cost; it is not a fare, an airport license fee, or a revised public-funding figure.
The airport authority’s February 2026 staff analysis considered a 40-year license with two five-year options. Under the proposed arrangement described in that analysis, The Boring Company would obtain permits and environmental approvals and pay operating and maintenance costs. The license process and the project’s construction financing are distinct questions: a privately funded project still requires approvals and agreements for the facilities it uses.

When will the Nashville airport tunnel open?
The opening target has moved. At the July 2025 announcement, the project was described as potentially opening as early as fall 2026. In a June 26, 2026, update, the U.S. Department of Transportation instead gave spring 2027 as the expected opening.

These are reported milestones and expectations, not confirmation that the service is complete or that the opening date is guaranteed. The company’s August update described MB3 as expected in September; the cited materials do not establish whether that later milestone occurred.

What benefits are promised—and what remains disputed?
The state and The Boring Company say the Loop could reduce surface traffic, offer more predictable travel during major events, preserve roads and provide electric, zero-emission travel. Those are project claims and goals, not independently demonstrated results from an operating Nashville system. The company also says the system will meet or exceed NFPA-130 fire and life-safety standards; that is a design commitment, not a completed independent finding of compliance.
A Metro Council resolution records objections about limited consultation with Nashville residents and officials, as well as questions about safety, labor practices, environmental review, karst geology, sinkholes, flooding, accessibility and local authority. It also records that council members said several questions were not substantively answered during a February 2026 committee appearance. These concerns are part of an ongoing local debate, not proof that a particular risk has occurred.
The same resolution says subcontractor Shane Trucking & Excavating walked off the project in November 2025, citing late payments and safety concerns. That is an allegation recorded in the council resolution; it is not an independently adjudicated finding.
What has not been established yet?
The cited official materials do not establish a final fare schedule, ridership forecast, passenger capacity, completed safety certification or final environmental impact finding. They also do not settle the final route, accessibility details, long-term expansion or opening schedule.

A fair comparison would need confirmed information on passenger capacity, stop pattern, coverage, accessibility, public oversight, construction disruption, operating costs and travel-time reliability. The available materials do not provide a full apples-to-apples performance study, so claims that the Loop will outperform conventional transit on those measures should be treated as unverified.
