NASA and the U.S. Postal Service have stopped using their small groups of Canoo electric vehicles. NASA said its three crew-transport vehicles no longer met mission requirements; USPS said its six evaluation vehicles were no longer in use and that it expected no further investment. Neither agency’s account establishes that former Canoo CEO Tony Aquila’s reported commitment to support government programs reached the agencies.
What happened to the Canoo vehicles?
The two agencies used the vehicles for different purposes and gave different explanations for ending their use. NASA had three specially designed electric vehicles for transporting astronauts at Kennedy Space Center. USPS acquired six Canoo Lifestyle Delivery Vehicles for evaluation, not as a large-scale fleet deployment.
| Agency | Vehicles and purpose | What the agency said | What remains undisclosed |
|---|---|---|---|
| NASA | Three crew-transport vehicles for Artemis-related astronaut transportation | They were “no longer able to meet our mission requirements.” | The specific operational or technical reasons were not detailed in the cited report. |
| USPS | Six Lifestyle Delivery Vehicles acquired “for evaluation purposes” | They “are no longer in use”; “the evaluation has been completed”; “no further investments are anticipated.” | USPS did not disclose the evaluation’s findings or say what factors drove its decision. |
The statements about the agencies’ decisions were relayed in December 2025 reporting, rather than presented as direct public announcements from NASA or USPS. In particular, USPS’s explanation does not establish whether the evaluation turned on performance, reliability, service availability, cost, or another consideration.
NASA’s vehicles were specialized astronaut transports
NASA says the three fully electric crew-transport vehicles arrived at Kennedy Space Center on July 11, 2023. They were intended to carry astronauts to Launch Complex 39B for Artemis missions. A December 2025 report relaying NASA’s response said the vehicles no longer met mission requirements. It also reported that, as of October 2025, NASA was leasing an Airstream-built Astrovan from Boeing for crewed space missions. The reported explanation does not provide a more specific diagnosis of why the Canoo vehicles were no longer suitable.

USPS ended a six-vehicle evaluation without publishing its findings
USPS acquired six Canoo vehicles in 2024 to evaluate them. By the agency’s account, the evaluation had ended, the vehicles were no longer in use, and it anticipated no further investment. The agency did not share details or final results in the cited December 2025 report, so the decision should not be characterized as proof of a particular defect or failure.
The six Canoo vehicles were separate from USPS’s broader delivery-fleet modernization. USPS Employee News reported on December 1, 2025, with an update on December 29, that the agency planned 106,000 new vehicles by 2028: 45,000 battery-electric next-generation delivery vehicles and 21,000 commercial off-the-shelf battery-electric vehicles. The article said more than 35,000 new vehicles were already on the road at publication, including 8,500 battery-powered vehicles. Those fleet-wide figures do not reveal the outcome of the Canoo evaluation.

What bankruptcy explains—and what it does not
Canoo Inc. and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on January 17, 2025, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The company’s SEC filing said a Chapter 7 trustee would control the debtors’ assets and liabilities and liquidate assets under the Bankruptcy Code. That filing establishes Canoo’s liquidation process; it does not, by itself, establish why either agency stopped using its vehicles.
Electrive reported that former CEO Tony Aquila purchased Canoo’s assets for $4 million and told a trustee that a “principal motivation” was his “desire to honour [Canoo’s commitment to provide service and support for certain government programs”. The report said it was unclear whether that service and support was ever forthcoming. It also said NASA and USPS declined to say whether Aquila approached them about support, and that Aquila did not respond to requests for comment. The available reporting therefore does not establish either that support was delivered or that no support was offered.

Agency fleet figures provide context, not a verdict on Canoo
NASA’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Fleet page, last updated April 30, 2024, described a strategy using both NASA-owned and GSA-leased vehicles. At that time, NASA said about 15% of its fleet was zero-emission, it had 68 Level II charging stations, and approximately 1,100 would be needed to meet operational needs. These are dated figures, not current fleet counts, and they do not explain the decision about the three Canoo transports.
