The car is most plausibly a Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, but the available evidence does not identify a specific vehicle or verify that it is abandoned—or that it belonged to a dictator. A 2015 report about a Pullman once owned by Jean-Bédel Bokassa is a possible lead, not proof that it is the car shown in the title’s source material.
What is a Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman?
The Mercedes-Benz 600, known as the W 100 “Grand Mercedes,” was introduced in 1963, according to Mercedes-Benz’s official history. “Pullman” refers to the model’s long-wheelbase limousine form; it is not a separate make or model family.
The 600 came in three body configurations. The Petersen Automotive Museum describes a short-wheelbase sedan, a Pullman limousine, and a Pullman Landaulet. The Landaulet had a partially open-top passenger compartment, so the terms “Pullman” and “Landaulet” are not interchangeable.
| Configuration | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|
| Short-wheelbase sedan | The shorter four-door body style. |
| Pullman limousine | The extended limousine body. |
| Pullman Landaulet | A Pullman with a partially open-top passenger compartment. |
What made the 600 unusual?
The 600 combined luxury equipment with complex engineering. The Petersen Automotive Museum lists adjustable air suspension, power brakes, central locking, and electronic heating and cooling. Its hydraulic system operated components including the windows, seats, doors, and trunk lid. The museum also characterizes the car as sophisticated and costly to maintain.

The museum reports that Mercedes-Benz built 2,677 600s through the end of production in 1981, including 59 Pullman Landaulets. Those figures have different scopes: 59 is the Landaulet count, not the total number of Pullman limousines. A figure of 304 for four-door Pullman limousines is not established by the cited sources.
Is the African car an ex-Bokassa limousine?
The connection is possible but unconfirmed. In an article dated 14 March 2015, The Steeple Times reported that Bokassa bought two Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullmans in 1977. It said one former Bokassa car was then being offered for £225,000, described it as a black, left-hand-drive example with conference seating, and reported a mileage of 13,000 at the time.

That account concerns a historical sale offer. It does not connect the reported car to the vehicle in the title’s source material, establish where it is now, or show that it was abandoned. The asking price and mileage are figures reported in 2015, not current market information or a present-day condition report.

The specific vehicle’s identity, location, condition, ownership history, and abandoned status remain unverified. The available information does not provide a chassis number, dated current photographs, or a reliable chain of custody that would tie the car to Bokassa.

To establish the identity, the original photograph or video would need to be traced to its source and matched against a chassis record or a dated ownership or sale record. Until then, the careful description is an unidentified car that may be a Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman—not a confirmed abandoned dictator’s limousine.
